WELCOME BACK 2021-22
The 2021-22 school year has begun! Yes, we have worked through some challenges with a few students
and staff quarantining due to COVID-19, but we are educating our students face-to-face! Bringing students
back into the schools has been exciting and uplifting for all of us!
I heard of an “inspirational” workshop that occurred a few years ago in which the speaker passed out
balloons and markers to all 100 participants. He asked the attendees to blow up their balloons and write their
names on them. Then he collected all 100 balloons and put them in another room. The attendees were then
asked to go into the other room and find the balloon with their name on it. After 5 minutes of chaos, very few
people had any luck finding their own balloon. The speaker then asked everyone to pick up any balloon and
find the person whose name was written on it. Within a few minutes, almost everyone had their own balloon.
After the attendees returned to the auditorium, the speaker explained, “What we first experienced in trying to
find our own balloon is similar to what often happens in life. We experience difficulties and choose to focus on
ourselves and our own problems. But when we pause to take a moment to focus on the needs of others, we will
not only meet their needs, but in doing so, we find that we have met our own needs as well.
The Omak School District has an incredible staff who take the time to locate students’ balloons. They greet
students with a smile, provide excellent teaching and encourage our students with uplifting words of hope. We
are blessed to see our students back in our schools and to have staff who spend time focusing on the needs of
our students each day.

NORTH ELEMENTARY
Students and staff are excited to begin this new school year, and we have enjoyed seeing all the smiling
faces. Teachers have been working hard on teaching routines and expectations to ensure that our classrooms are
safe and welcoming to students. This year we will implement a new social, emotional curriculum called Second
Step. This curriculum will provide all students with learning essential skills like problem-solving, friendship
skills, emotion management, and empathy. This month we will focus on our school expectations of being safe,
responsible, and respectful. We will also introduce a new assessment called Star 360. This assessment will
provide us with detailed information on students' reading and math skills and screen for Dyslexia. We are
thankful for these additions and look forward to a successful year at North!

Disability Awareness Month
North Elementary Special Education Team created a
bulletin board to honor Disability Awareness Month.
Students and staff may take a ribbon from the rainbow to
match a particular disability. Teachers will be having
classroom discussions on each type of disability the
ribbons represent.

EAST ELEMENTARY
BACK-TO-SCHOOL NIGHT
Late last spring, East Elementary was awarded a Walmart Community Grant in the
amount of $1,000. Funds were used to purchase Native American fiction and non-fiction
texts for classroom libraries. Grade levels will receive four to six consistent titles for each
classroom. We are grateful for this opportunity to have more inclusive literature in our
classrooms.
East Elementary continues to partner with the Okanogan Conservation District to bring
our school garden to its full potential! The Okanogan Conservation District was awarded a
USDA Farm to School grant to support school gardens in Okanogan County. The proposed
project will expand agricultural education, develop STEM curriculum, and expand local
food procurement efforts. To accomplish these goals, a portion of funds is allocated to
Okanogan County school gardens. East's school garden will receive $2,142 this year to
expand future goals and sustain current projects. East's Parent Lighthouse Team supports
garden-related initiatives as well. We are very grateful for the support and collaborations!

MIDDLE SCHOOL UPDATES COURTYARD
Welcome Back!! The 2021-22 school year began September 1st, and I am very excited to continue
developing a positive school climate and culture where ALL children can be successful. I hope that everyone
had an opportunity to relax, spend time with family and friends over summer break, and are ready for a great
school year. The last school year was a tornado of ongoing schedule changes with multiple instructional
formats. We are starting the 2021-22 school year with in-person learning, five days a week, on a regular daily
schedule of 8:00 am - 3:00 pm.
Summer Projects OMS STEM Summer School Academy
A HUGE thank you to our amazing custodial and Thirty students participating in the OMS
maintenance staff. Chris McCart, Tom Summerson, STEM Academy this summer were engaged in
Jeanette Bryant, Christian Willmon, Jerrod McNeil, and Corrective Reading and STEM activities.

HIGH SCHOOL LINK CREW
SUPPORTS INCOMING FRESHMEN
High School Principal David Kirk started 15 years ago with Omak School District and brought his training
through Link Crew with him. We did not do Link Crew the first year, but Omak High School had welcomed the
freshman class differently from when we all went to school for the past 14 years. The highest dropout transition
year is between the eighth grade and ninth-grade year. Link Crew is designed to help our freshmen transition
safely and with a lot of support. Freshmen are often more willing to connect with other peers than to ask for staff
help. The philosophy is to link ten incoming freshmen students with two exceptional leaders to make one year-
long crew. The first-day orientation changes the big scary high school's perception and helps the freshmen get to
know their link leaders in the building. There is an assembly where Mr. Kirk leads the students in several ice
breaker-style activities and then two team sessions where the leaders are in charge of their crew. The day wraps
up with a commitment to graduation, and then students have lunch. Following lunch, the students see each class
period for only 20 minutes. This process reduces the stress of the new school and puts the freshmen in a
balanced setting. The orientation is only the first step in a year-long commitment of our Link Leaders. The Link
Crew comes up with several ways to connect with the freshmen through targeted lessons, academic, and social
follow-ups. The most popular event in our finals week. The idea is that our students have hot chocolate and
study for their upcoming finals. The upperclassmen have finals to study for as well, and can give tips and tricks
on how to prepare for the semester finals. COVID has impacted a few of the fun activities we have done in the
past, but Link Crew is going strong and has helped shape the culture of Omak High School.

The resiliency of our students and community is amazing as we continue to work through the many
challenges we have been presented. We have already seen astonishing accomplishments by our students who
have worked throughout the summer to finish coursework and earn credits towards the ultimate goal of
graduation.
I am thankful and grateful to be the Director of Highlands High School. We have an excellent staff that
specializes in working with unique situations and look forward to assisting you along your journey to success!

District Appoints New Board Director
Position No. 5 - At Large
Mrs. Mandy Holz is a former Omak High School graduate, a long-term community
member, and business owner. Over the last nine years, she has served our community
and students in many different areas, such as collaboratively preparing 100 free pre-
cooked Thanksgiving meals, volunteering at our annual 3-F Club during Christmas
break, serving as a community representative to the Omak superintendent search, a
volunteer at Paschal Sherman Indian School, and many hours of service at her local Mandy Holz
church.
She looks forward to the task of interpreting how new legislative policy will apply
to our local school district.
MAINTENANCE CREW COMPLETES
NEEDED UPGRADES
The Omak School District applied for and was awarded a $63,000
equipment assistance grant through our school lunch program to replace the
walk-in freezer/cooler at our middle/high school kitchen. We contracted the
installation with Rehn Brook Refrigeration. The project was completed on
September 10th, and after a few issues, it is up and running great.

The Omak School Maintenance Department replaced a geothermal heat
pump in our Career and Technical Education building during the summer
due to age and failure. The heat pump is in place and will be a nice upgrade
to the building Thank you to our HVAC Tech, Chad Morrison.

BIENVENIDOS DE NUEVO 2021-22
¡El año escolar 2021-22 ha comenzado! Sí, hemos trabajado a través de algunos problemas con algunos estudiantes y
personal en cuarentena debido a COVID-19, ¡pero estamos educando a nuestros estudiantes en persona! ¡El Traer a los
estudiantes de vuelta a las escuelas ha sido emocionante y edificante para todos nosotros!
Escuché de un taller "inspirador" que ocurrió hace unos años en el que el orador repartió globos y marcadores a los
100 participantes. Pidió a los asistentes que inflaran sus globos y escribieran sus nombres en ellos. Luego recogió los 100

NORTE ELEMENTAL
Los estudiantes y el personal están emocionados de comenzar este nuevo año escolar, y hemos disfrutado viendo

ESTE ELEMENTAL
NOCHE DE REGRESO ESCOLAR
A fines de la primavera pasada, East Elementary recibió un subsidio comunitario de Walmart por

A LOS ESTUDIANTES QUE ENTRAN AL
PRIMER ANO DE HS
David Kirk comenzó hace 15 años con el Distrito Escolar de Omak y trajo su entrenamiento a través de Link Crew
con él. No hicimos Link Crew el primer año, pero Omak High School había dado la bienvenida a la clase de primer año de
manera diferente a cuando todos fuimos a la escuela durante los últimos 14 años. El año de transición de más alta
deserción es entre el octavo y el noveno grado. Link Crew está diseñado para ayudar la transición de nuestros estudiantes
de primer año de secundaria en forma segura y con mucho apoyo. Los estudiantes de primer año a menudo están más
dispuestos a conectarse con otros compañeros, que a pedir ayuda al personal escolar. La filosofía es, vincular a diez
estudiantes entrantes de primer año con dos líderes excepcionales para hacer un equipo que dura un año. La orientación del
primer día cambia la percepción “aterradora” de la escuela secundaria y ayuda a los estudiantes de primer año a conocer a
sus líderes de enlace en la escuela Hay una asamblea donde el Sr. Kirk dirige a los estudiantes en varias actividades estilo
rompehielos y luego dos sesiones de equipo donde los líderes están a cargo de su grupo. El día termina con un compromiso
a graduarse, y luego los estudiantes almuerzan. Después del almuerzo, los estudiantes visitan cada período de clase por
solo 20 minutos. Este proceso reduce el estrés de la nueva escuela y pone a los estudiantes de primer año en un tono
equilibrado. La orientación es solo el primer paso en un compromiso de un año de nuestros Link Leader. El Link Crew
presenta varias formas de conectarse con los estudiantes de primer año a través de lecciones específicas, aspectos
académicos y sociales. El evento más popular es nuestra semana de pruebas finales. La idea es que nuestros estudiantes
tengan chocolate caliente y estudien para sus próximas finales. Los estudiantes mayores tienen finales para estudiar y
pueden dar consejos e ideas sobre cómo prepararse para las finales del semestre. COVID ha impactado algunas de las
actividades divertidas que hemos hecho en el pasado, pero Link Crew se está fortaleciendo y ha ayudado a dar forma a la
cultura de Omak High School.

escolar. Nuestro personal, el maestro de Matemáticas y Ciencias Sr. Popelier, el Maestro de ELA y Educación Cívica Sr.
Simmons, la secretaria Rebekah Pfitzer y otros más, están listos para ayudar a nuestros estudiantes con sus necesidades

El Distrito nombra nuevo miembro de la Junta Directiva

La Sra. Mandy Holz es una ex graduada de Omak High School, miembro de la comunidad
a largo plazo y propietaria de un negocio. Durante los últimos nueve años, ha servido a nuestra
comunidad y estudiantes en muchas áreas diferentes, como la preparación colaborativa de 100
comidas gratuitas para Acción de Gracias, como voluntaria en nuestro Club anual de 3-F
durante las vacaciones de Navidad, sirvió como representante de la comunidad durante la
búsqueda del superintendente de Omak, como voluntaria en Paschal Sherman Indian School y

EQUIPO DE MANTENIMIENTO COMPLETA
REMODELACIONES NECESARIAS
El Distrito Escolar de Omak solicitó y recibió a través de nuestro programa de
almuerzo escolar un subsidio de asistencia de $ 63,000 para reemplazar el
congelador / refrigeradores en nuestra cocina de escuela intermedia/escuela
secudaria. Contratamos la instalación con Rehn Brook Refrigeración. El proyecto se
completó el 10 de septiembre, y después de algunos pequeños percances está
funcionando en forma excelente.
Congelador/enfriador MS-HS
El Departamento de Mantenimiento de la Escuela Omak reemplazó una bomba
de calor geotérmica en nuestro edifici Career and Technical Education durante el
