INSPIRING WELCOME TO MNSAA’S 2021 CONFERENCE We are delighted to have you back and confident you will leave today inspired with LEARNERS new ideas and re-energized for your work leading your school community of students, staff and stakeholders. It is a joy to welcome back Dr. Eric Twadell, Superintendent of Adlai Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire, IL, as our keynote speaker. Today he will guide us in proficiency- based instruction and assessment focusing on successful PLC models. We are also pleased to have Dr. Julene Nolan and Paul Bernabei back this year. Jules will help us use lessons from the past to move forward, and Paul will guide us in following our North Star while being mindful of school culture. NFL champion and promotional speaker Matt Birk will be with us and is sure to inspire us with his wit and wisdom. To round out our list of premier speakers, Joe Beckman will also be joining us with his reminder to Just Look Up! The process is very thorough and helped me move our school forward, reaching for excellence year after year.” - Maggie Quast Maggie Quast is starting her 20th year at Maternity of Mary/St. Andrew School and her 10th year as principal. She received her undergraduate degree from Drake University and Master's Degree from the University of St. Thomas. She was hired to lead MMSA during a year the school was entering their MNSAA self-study process. Instead of soliciting a year delay in completing the self-study, she ultimately led the school community in moving forward and reports it was the best decision she could have made. Board of Directors Considerations Directors are administrative leaders who represent the various sizes, types, geography, and religious/cultural diversity of our member schools. Each year, schools have the opportunity to nominate leaders at any time. If you or your school community wants make such a nomination, candidates will be considered for the next election. In addition to elected Directors, MNSAA Bylaws allow for up to three Associate Directors to be appointed annually by the seated board. Appointed directors come from agencies that are in agreement with the objectives and function of MNSAA and who possess expertise relating to the accreditation of nonpublic schools. mnsaa.org 4
Candidates Recommended for Continued Service to our Association in 2021-24 Mr. Matthew Cleary Torah Academy, St. Louis Park (Pre-8) “ MNSAA has provided tremendous support and professional development to myself and our teachers. Our school has improved significantly because of MNSAA’s accreditation process and the tremendous presenters they bring to the Annual Conference. It is a privilege to serve on a board that is able to have such a significant impact on nonpublic schools.” - Matt Cleary Matt Cleary is the General Studies Principal at Torah Academy. Prior to that, he was the Dean of Summer School and a social studies teacher and football coach at Forest Lake High School. His first teaching job was in Shell Lake, WI where he taught and coached for 5 years. Matt has his M.S. in Curriculum and Instruction with a Graduate Certificate as a Reading Teacher from St. Cloud State University. He also earned his K-12 Principal license from St. Cloud State. Matt and his wife, Tina, have 3 kids and enjoy their pets. He spends his free time coaching his kids, walking/hiking/running one or more of his dogs, playing music and reading. Mr. Andrew Hilliker Stella Maris Academy, Duluth (Pre-8) “ MNSAA has been and continues to offer an exceptional framework for school leadership and affirmation of excellence. In addition, MNSAA opens doors to support in leadership, professional development, and connecting administrators across the state - an invaluable added bonus.” - Andrew Hilliker Andrew held positions as teacher, principal, and diocesan administrator at St. Joseph's School, Moorhead and the Diocese of Crookston in Northwest Minnesota from 2010 to 2021. Currently, Andrew serves as President of Stella Maris Academy in Duluth. In addition, Andrew supports MNSAA as board treasurer and as a team chair for onsite visits. Andrew holds a secondary teacher license and a K-12 principal license in Minnesota. In his spare time, Andrew enjoys exploring the North Shore with his wife and three children. Ms. Jodi Vanderheiden Mary of Lourdes School, Little Falls (Pre-8) “ I truly feel blessed to be in the Catholic School system. I believe with all my heart that God has a plan for me to be an advocate for Catholic schools, students, teachers, and familites” - Jodi Vanderheiden Jodi Vanderheiden left her teaching career in the public sector after 20 years. In the public sector she taught middle school math for 18 years and 2nd grade for 2 years. After earning her Masters in Educational leadership and receiving her Principal license through the University of Minnesota Mankato, she was blessed with a PreK-12 position at Sacred Heart Catholic School in East Grand Forks. MISSION STATEMENT The Minnesota Nonpublic School Accrediting Association (MNSAA) is a catalyst for enhancing the quality of Preschool through Grade 12 nonpublic education in Minnesota through a comprehensive process of accreditation.
