The Spencerville A PUBLICATION OF THE SPENCERVILLE SCHOOL SYSTEM Fall Newsletter 2021 FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT The 2021-2022 school year is approaching quickly. We are planning to return to school in-person every day and in the safest manner possible. We have learned a lot over the last school year and will use this knowledge to leverage us in planning for this year. Also, the parent feedback shared with school administration in the spring was appreci- ated and helpful in making decisions. Thank you for your continued support for the schools! You might have noticed the improvements done on several of our parking lots over the summer. We have excellent facilities and therefore, keeping them maintained and updated is one of the many priorities we consistently focus on. All other summer cleaning and projects are mostly complete. In addition to continuing with cleaning protocols this school year, we are consciously working to keep fresh air flowing through the building. Special HEPA Units and filters are being considered to assist with this, which will be funded by the Coronavirus Relief Funds. I would like to welcome our new staff to the Bearcat family: Kelli Williams – Athletic Director, Keith Lenhart – H.S. History teacher, Kyle Koenig – H.S. History teacher, Luke Gerardot – 2nd Grade teacher, Brianna Osterhage – Intervention Specialist, Josiah Stober – Intervention Specialist, Rachel Bohyer – Tutor, and Melanie Wapplehorst – Sign Language Interpreter. Some of these positions are replacements, while others are new posi- tions to help with our academic needs. Spencerville Schools is proud of the many extra-curricular activities offered to our students. Back on the sports schedule is Boys Golf, coached by Kory Zenz. In other sports news: The Spencerville Village and School District will be hosting a 9-11 memorial event at our September 10th home football game against Bluffton. All active military and veterans, as well as 1st Responders will have free admittance into the game. Several special recognitions and activities are being planned for this event. Please come out and support our student athletes, while honoring those who have sacrificed to protect our country. I encourage everyone to continue to visit our school website for all the latest updates. You can find our district plans for Learning to our families who have supported the school through the Pandemic and continue to allow us the privilege to educate over 900 students every year. School Vision: Learning and Growing Together as One School, One Community, One Purpose. WE are Bearcats! Cindy Endsley
I hope everyone is staying healthy and safe as we continue to deal with the CO- VID-19 pandemic. The 2020-2021 school year was definitely different, but we were able to have students attend in-person the whole year. As the year progressed, we were able to get back to some sense of normalcy. At the conclusion of the 2020-2021 school year, Dominic Adkins and Dylan Wierwille received the American Legion School Award Medal. They were selected based on seven qualities for development: courage, patriotism, honor, scholarship, leadership, and service. This is a new award to Spencer- ville and we will continue our partnership with the American Legion. I hope that everyone was able to find some time to relax and unwind with family and friends this summer. Everyone needed some time to recharge the batteries and have some time for themselves. As we move toward the 2021-2022 school year, it is important we continue to work together as the world continues to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic. Working and communicating together will help resolve any difficulties we face this school year. There will be some new faces in the building as we start the year. Keith Lenhart, a 2013 graduate, will be teaching American History and other social studies electives. Joining Keith in the social studies department will be Kyle Koenig. Kyle will be teaching world history and eighth grade social studies. You will also see Coach Koenig on the sideline this fall with the football team. In the athletic department, we welcome Kelli Williams as our new athletic director. All three of these people will be great additions to our Bearcat staff! You will get the chance to meet them at our open house on Monday, August 30th, from 6pm to 7pm. In addition to the new faces, we will have a new grading scale. The board approved the following grading scale and point values at the June meeting: A 94-100 (4.0), A- 90-93 (3.7), B+ 87-89 (3.3), B 83-86 (3.0), B- 80-82 (2.7), C+ 77-79 (2.3), C 73-76 (2.0), C- 70-72 (1.7), D+ 67-69 (1.3), D 63-66 (1.0), D- 60-62 (0.7), F 59-0 (0.0). The doors will unlock for students to enter the building at 7:25am. The school day is 7:45am to 2:45pm. As of right now, breakfast and lunch will be provided free to all students. We are doing everything we can to make this another great school year while keeping everyone as safe as possible. We have an amazing community with great students, parents, and staff! We all want what is best for our Bearcat students. I saw this quote this summer that was adapted from a quote by Damian Barr. “We are not all in the same boat. We are in the same storm. Some have yachts, some have canoes, and some are drowning. Just be kind and help whoever you can.” If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to me. As I mentioned above, communication is key and we can solve any issues or problems by talking. You can reach me at gepharts@svbearcats.org or 419.647.4111 ext. 3203. Take care and stay healthy! We will continue to get through this! Scott Gephart, Principal 9-12

ELEMENTARY NEWS Welcome to the 2021-22 school year!! I hope you enjoyed your summer and spent the time reconnecting with family and friends. The elementary staff is excited to have students return to in-person learning for 5 days a week. We believe being in school full time will enable us to provide the best educational opportunities for all students. Staff will continue to communicate using class dojo. Teachers will send out instructions for new class accounts as we near closer to the start of school. Open House will be Monday, August 30th from 6-7. Students will be able to bring their supplies and meet their teachers. Since students in grades 3 and 4 have multiple teachers, a class video with information for a successful year will be emailed via final forms closer to the opening of the school year. Welcome new staff:Luke Gerardot will be a new addition to the second grade staff. Luke is a Bluffton graduate and will begin his first year of teaching. He student taught at both Columbus Grove and Allen East. He believes in a hand-on approach to teaching and values the importance of building strong relationships with both his students and parents. Brianna Osterhage will be the Intervention Specialist for grades 2 and 3. Bri has been an intervention specialist for one of our county multiple disabilities classrooms for the last 3 years. She has extensive knowledge to help support all students. Her enthusiasm and energy will be an asset to our Spencerville teaching staff. Arrival and Dismissal:Arrival will continue as usual for students who do not ride the bus. Drop off will be at the main entrance under the bell tower. Students will enter the building at 8:25. Dismissal will continue in the same manner as last year. K-4 students who do not ride the bus will be picked up in the west parking lot off Kolter Rd as usual. I am asking that parents/guardians pull into a park- ing spot and walk up to the grade level line to pick up your child. Please DO NOT park along the sidewalk for pick up as this will create a “bottleneck” into the drive that leads into the parking lot. Congratulations!!Stryker Stockstill and Kinsley Myers earned the American Legion School Award Medal for their outstanding qualities of courage, patriotism, honor, scholarship, leadership and service. This award is given each year and students are chosen by the 4th grade teachers. Way to go Stryker and Kinsley!! We are proud of you! PTO: I would like to thank our PTO, parents and students for a successful Laps for Learn- ing campaign in the spring! The staff and students had a blast!! PTO is vital to providing wonderful opportunities for our students! PTO sponsors all K-4 fieldtrips, books for our classrooms and libraries, and multiple rewards teachers give to students. We appreciate all of the time and effort these volunteers give to our school commu- nity. Please consider being a part of this amazing organization!! Please contact Amy Pohlman for more information. New grading scale: The board approved the following grading scale and point values at the June meeting. This scale will apply to all students in grades 1-12. While elementary students do not calculate a grade point average, the scale will contribute to letter grades earned for their grade card. A 94-100 (4.0), A- 90-93 (3.7), B+ 87-89 (3.3), B 83-86 (3.0), B- 80-82 (2.7), C+ 77-79 (2.3), C 73-76 (2.0), C- 70-72 (1.7), D+ 67-69 (1.3), D 63-66 (1.0), D- 60-62 (0.7), F 59-0 (0.0). Unfortunately, Covid is still lingering and causing some concerns for the upcoming school year. The elementary staff will do our best to keep our students safe and healthy. Our goal is not to create anxiety for our students and to keep our learning environments as normal as possible. I believe our staff did an outstanding job with this last year and will continue to do the same this year. We look forward to a productive and engaging school year. Please keep the lines of communication open. Don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or concerns. My door is always open. A Note from the Treasurer Income Tax Renewal- No New Taxes Our Income tax levy is up for renewal in November 2021. It is a 1% income tax levy. We have counted on community support in the past and hope the support will continue for this no new tax levy that is vital to keeping our schools prop- erly funded. The levy accounted for 10.56% of revenue in FY21 (7/2020-06/2021). Our expenses are increasing at a reasonable growth but revenues are currently flat. (Revenues are currently at FY19 levels.) As everyone went through covid and income in general went down, so did the district revenue from the current income tax levy. The income tax revenue is receipted directly into the general fund to be used for all instructional needs, staff salaries, and staff benefits. We have worked very hard to be a good steward of the community’s tax dollars. In the midst of a pandemic, trying to keep students and staff safe and spending mindfully for the betterment of the district and ultimately the community has been the goal. Your vote in favor of the tax levy would allow Spencerville Schools to continue to weather the storm in good shape. How the pandemic has affected the district financially When the State of Ohio cut funding in FY20 of $170,000 to Spencerville schools, all schools were told the cuts would continue through FY21. However, the State of Ohio restored partial funding in January 2021. We are expecting the remainder to be restored in October 2021. This brings the state funding back up to FY19 levels. Currently we are using the Elementary and Secondary Emergency Education Relief Fund (ESSER) funds to bridge the gap between revenue levels and expenditure levels. Grants the district has taken advantage of or is in the process of taking advantage of are: 1. Rural and Small Town Grant - $53,375.69 – These funds were used for personal protection equipment and sup- plies in FY21. 2. Broadband Grant - $7,500 to provide internet to students during remote learning. These funds were used in FY21 and the remainder will be used in FY22. 3. Library Grant - $2,000 to provide additional technology supplies for remote learning. These funds were used in FY21. 4. ESSER I – $124,894.11 – These funds were used to sustain some staffing salaries and supplies in FY21. 5. ESSER II - $487,833.02 – These funds are currently being used to sustain certain staff salaries and benefits. These funds will be used across FY22 and FY23. 6. ESSER III – 1,096,381.84 These funds are being used for the following: 20% used for learning losses, 2 bus- ses, education technology, software licenses, transitional first teacher, a tutor, providing mental health services, indoor air quality, continuing to employ existing staff, and other necessary activities to maintain the operations and continuity of service. These funds will be used across FY22, FY23, and FY24. As you can see, we are working hard to minimize costs to the district’s general fund by leveraging all available state and federal funds so we can continue to provide an outstanding education for all Spencerville students. If you have any questions please call Brenda Core, Spencerville Schools Treasurer at 419 647-4111 x 3204 or email me at coreb@ svbearcats.org.
As the principal of Spencerville Middle School, I am excited to welcome you to the 2021-22 school year. First, let me thank you for your support and dunderstanding as we responded to the guidelines of the pandemic. Our students, parents, staff, and community handled the demands very well in sudden change moments. I want everyone to know how blessed I am to have a great school family. Teachers, Secretaries, Support Staff, Fellow Administrators, Counselors, Nurse, Custodians, Café Staff, Bus Drivers, Parents/Guardians. I believe we have all grown to appreciate each other’s commitment to children. I pray that we con- tinue to grow together, find some peace, and that we all continue to work as a team. Welcome new staff members to the Spencerville Middle School! Mr. Kyle Koenig will be teaching 8th grade Social Studies. Kyle recently graduated from Bowling Green State University and has local ties as he also graduated from Mar- ion Local High School. Mr. Josiah Stober will be our new intervention teacher. Josiah is a Spencerville graduate and has recently been teaching at the Delphos City Schools. A newly added position of a 5-12 tutor has been filled by Mrs. Rachel Bohyer. Rachel has been working in the Spencerville School System as an educational aide. Congratulations to Kaitlyn Keller and Brody Sommers as they were selected as the American Legion Student of the Year for the 20-21 school year. This award is given to a boy/girl in 8th grade that demonstrates strong qualities of character and citizenship. Each student will receive up to $75 for the next school year’s fees paid by the American Legion. We thank the American Legion for recognizing these students and their continued support. New Grading Scale: The board approved the following grading scale and point values at the June meet- ing: A 94-100 (4.0), A- 90-93 (3.7), B+ 87-89 (3.3), B 83-86 (3.0), B- 80-82 (2.7), C+ 77-79 (2.3), C 73-76 (2.0), C- 70-72 (1.7), D+ 67-69 (1.3), D 63-66 (1.0), D- 60-62 (0.7), F 59-0 (0.0). The number one factor in your son or daughter’s education is YOU! To me things are very simple to be successful, show up with a great attitude, treat people kindly, do what is expected, and prepare to learn! These things cost nothing to do and pay great dividends!
I ask that you: 1. Make time for daily chats about school 2. Don’t accept “Nothing” when you ask your child “What did you learn today?” 3. Check that homework is complete 4. Support the school, become familiar with the school policies. Bottom line be involved! I have always said, the most difficult yet rewarding job of all is being a parent. Don’t assume that once they are in middle school, they don’t need your involvement. They do! The entire faculty and staff are looking forward to welcoming your children back. I welcome and value your positive energy and dedication to excellence in education, and I look forward to working with you and your children. As you know, it takes a strong connection with the community and vital to the strength of the connection is communication and understanding the system. I ask that if you ever have a concern/question, please contact the school directly for information. Social media can be a great tool for information yet many use it as a venting ground without specif- ics. This may lead to unexpected confusion. Please know that your child is important to us. A great quote to live by...“Do everything with a good heart and expect nothing in return, and you will never be disappointed”. Good luck to you this upcoming school year! Open House will be August 30th from 6-7 p.m. We ask that you guide and support your child’s learning by ensuring that he/she: 1. Attends school daily and arrives on time, ready for the day’s learning experience 2. Becomes familiar with the school’s policies, rules, and procedures. 3. Get’s involved with school outside the classroom setting 4. Has a place to study Learning and Growing Together as One School, One Community, One Purpose Follow Spencerville Middle School on Twitter!
