PAW This Week For the week ending July 13, 2021 WOLFIE Thanks to Amanda Albizu for fostering. NOTICES, REMINDERS, AND REQUESTS DOG WALKERS NEEDED AT COLLEGE PARK ANIMAL HOSPITAL - We’re still in need of new volunteers to add to our walkers list! Training provided! Each week, Lou sends out an e-mail asking for your availability in the coming week. Most people volunteer once or twice a week (and, depending on your schedule, not even every week) for a short or long walk around the neighborhood along with some cuddle and belly rub time. A few minutes of your week will make a world of difference to one of our dogs at the clinic - fresh air, sniffs, and some time with you provide such a needed break in the day. How ‘bout it? Contact Lou at dogfanatic@gmail.com to find out more. ____________________________________________________________ Page 2 of 13

VOLUNTEER TRAINING SERIES ON ENGAGING WITH SOCIAL MEDIA This series is trying to help us make the most of our engagement with social media. The more that we engage with the PAW social media posts of our animals, the more the overseer algorithm will put them in front of other viewers, increasing their chances for adoption. This is the final segment of the series. Thanks to Liza Malnik, Outreach and Social Media Coordinator, for putting this together for us. She took the course through Maddie’s Fund and is sharing with the group to maximize impact. Post # 6- Video Content One thing the algorithms (the way a platform decides how many people will see any given post) take into account is how long people watch videos and live feeds. The longer you watch, the more it will be shown to supporters. We’re not saying that if you’re busy you should put down your phone and let the video play itself out…but you can. You can find more information on Facebook’s algorithm at https://blog.hootsuite.com/facebook-algorithm/ Page 4 of 13
PAW This Week For the week ending July 13, 2021 CRITICAL NEED OF FOSTER HOMES TWO BONDED SENIORS This 14-year old pair needs a foster home before we will take them. Fostering dogs like these is an exerise in compassion on your part and dignity on theirs. They deserve to see out their days in a loving home. They are sometimes a bit more work and mess but they have learned all of the best charm tricks you cannot resist. There is some kidney failure going on here that is under control. Give it a try. If you are interested in fostering this pair, please contact Dave Campbell at dog-coordinator@paw-rescue.org. Page 5 of 13
PAW This Week For the week ending July 13, 2021 GENEVA is a 5-year-old, 65-pound Treeing Walker Coonhound. She is a very sweet girl who can be a little timid at first. She does not know any commands and needs to gain confidence. She loves just being next to you but doesn't like other dogs jumping on her or rough play. She is heartworm positive and will be beginning treatment in the next few weeks. It would really help to have her in a foster home during treatment. If you would be interested in fostering GENEVA, please contact Tracy Crotty at mtetm@yahoo.com. ROXY is a 4 year old, 67-pound Labrador Retriever/Akita mix. She is a sweet girl who likes attention and giving kisses. She would be good with kids over the age of 12 . She is still new to PAW and we will update as we learn more. If you would be interested in fostering ROXY, please contact Tracy Crotty at mtetm@yahoo.com Page 6 of 13
PAW This Week For the week ending July 13, 2021 MARTI is a 3-year-old, 68-pound Labrador Retriever mix. Marti recently had a seizure at the kennel, she is doing well, however would do better in a home setting. She is a happy sweet girl who would love nothing more to stay by your side and shower you with doggie kisses. Her condition has stabilized, and she is on meds to control the seizures. She would not do well in an apartment. If you would be interested in fostering MARTI, please contact Tracy Crotty at mtetm@yahoo.com QUEEN - Hi! I’m Queen, the sweetest pittie around! I’m 2 years old and 48 pounds of love! Although I'm 2, I still act like a puppy! I have a lot of energy, looooove to play with doggy friends (and don't always take "no" for an answer from other dogs; I don't get why they don't always want to play- just like meee!) and am still working on my house manners. Sometimes you just have to chew on things! I also really enjoy playing with humans and haven't yet learned that they don't always like me to play with my teeth... apparently, they think it hurts. Bummer! For this reason, I'd do best in a home with kids over the age of 12. If you are interested in fostering QUEEN, please contact Dave Campbell at dog- coordinator@paw-rescue.org. Page 7 of 13
PAW This Week For the week ending July 13, 2021 BROWNIE is a 5-year-old, 35-pound, lab/beagle mix (or possibly whippet?) who has just arrived from Puerto Rico. We are still getting to know him and will update once we have more information. If you are interested in fostering BROWNIE, please contact Dave Campbell at dog-coordinator@paw-rescue.org. ROCKY, a PAW volunteer favorite, is a stunning four-year-old treeing walker coonhound who weighs about 70 pounds. Everyone who knows him is in love with him! He’s an affectionate companion who enjoys exploring trails, trotting down sidewalks, or just sitting next to you on the ground cuddling. He wriggles his behind and prances with his front paws when he knows he’s going for a stroll. While out and about, Rocky simply glances at the people and other dogs along the way. Rocky relishes human affection—he especially delights in ear massages. Also, when you scratch his neck under his jaw, he points his nose straight up to the sky and closes his eyes. Rocky is house trained. Maybe seeing his video will want you to give him a PAW foster try. Here is Rocky Boy the Hound: Petstablished | Manage your Animal Welfare Organization (AWO) with our easy-to-use software. If you are interested in fostering ROCKY, please contact Dave Campbell at dog- coordinator@paw-rescue.org. Page 8 of 13
PAW This Week For the week ending July 13, 2021 ACCOMPLISHMENTS AND THANKS Columbia Kenneled Dogs – ROXY, MAX, NINA, and SAWYER were chilling at Preston last week. Their walkers braved the heat (and fireworks) to make sure they got some much-needed exercise: Susan Ginsberg, Bob Klein, Yael Harris, Denise Weist, Karen Huguley, Peggy Baum, Judy Novak, Parvathy Prem, Samantha Earle, Tony Ku, Elizabeth Stevenson, Jesse Thompson, Ty Obitz, and Holly Schuh. Rockville Kenneled Dogs – ROCKY, QUEEN, SIMBA, GUS, and BROWNIE were taking advantage of the amenities offered at Sniffers last week. The best amenity is the walkers who come get them out for some one- on-one time and exercise: Jamie Smith, Nicole Wilkinson, Jared Saltzberg, Robert Ulrey, Dan Aldana, Katie Kosack, Sonny Bloom, Liz Symonds, Clayton Englar, Rachel Galginaitis, Ryan Galginaitis, Sanjeeta Pant, Chris Morrison, and Jasmine McCrae. College Park Animal Hospital – Our pups missed out this week - no walkers were available. Please consider volunteering to give our dogs a break as they undergo procedures at the clinic. Contact Lou at dogfanatic@gmail.com to find out more. WHERE ARE THEY NOW? MAX TWO – NOW JAX (in his forever home for a week now): “We renamed Max to be called Jax. He is a sweet little boy and adjusting so well. He is very funny and smart!!!! We just love him.” Thanks to Bill Mercurio for fostering Max 2. He was adopted last week, but we forgot to thank his wonderful foster! Our foster parents are such a vital part of what PAW does. THANK YOU! Page 9 of 13
PAW This Week For the week ending July 13, 2021 NACHO - NOW CHARLIE “is settling in well. He and my other dog are getting along and playing. He is very high on the velcro scale and follows me everywhere. We need to work on me leaving him in the house, but I'm sure he'll get better with time and effort. He's getting calmer with the cats. That will take a while since they have places they can go that he can't, and they've been mostly avoiding him. My male cat, Odin, has actually rubbed against him a couple of times. Odin is disinclined to run, so they're making progress pretty quickly. He loves toys and enjoys exploring the contents of the two toy boxes.” ROGER - NOW RANSOME “We have all been settling in well and have a great routine that Ransome seems to enjoy. He goes on daily walks in the morning and evening to explore the neighborhood. Living with a Reiki master, Ransome enjoys all the belly rubs he can get! He is a bit afraid of riding in the car, but is able to tolerate short trips to the park and local pet store. He is walking well on the leash and loves the fenced in yard where he has his midday playtime. He also poses for photos. I am so happy to have Ransome! P.S. Ransome is an English surname meaning "Warrior's shield". What a great name for a Manchester terrier.” Page 11 of 13
