Catalogue 2018 Research at Kildalton College Nursery Tree Trials at Kildalton College Teagasc has been running ornamental tree trials in Kildalton College since 2016. It is important to develop knowledge of the production of a wider range of trees in light of climate change, emerging threats from pests and disease and changing market forces e.g. trees for smaller spaces. The outlook is positive for tree production in Ireland with a growing economy and replanting opportunities from Ash dieback only developing. To date more than 40 varieties of trees have been selected and grown in Kildalton. They are assessed under a range of criteria e.g. pest and disease incidence, rate of growth ornamental factors. Varieties selected have been sourced from specialist nurseries in the Netherlands and Belgium. 7 Page

Catalogue 2018 The Nursery Team: Conor Gallinagh (Nursery Technician) Conor, a Donegal native has been involved in horticulture since a young age. A family business, a tree nursery and garden centre inspired him into a career in horticulture. His most passionate areas within horticulture are plants and propagation. He graduated from UCD in 2016 with a Level 8 Degree in Horticulture and has gained experiences with landscapers, public gardens and nurseries. Fred Townsend (Nursery Lecturer) Fred, a past pupil of Kildalton (89-91) has always had a passion for horticulture and especially for nursery stock production. He worked on several nurseries both in Ireland and in Britain before becoming the nursery technician here in Kildalton- a post he filled for over 20 years. In more recent times he returned to college on a part time basis and completed a Level 7 Degree in Horticulture (WIT) and Level 8 Degree in (ITB). He became nursery lecturer last year where he hopes his passion, experience and close links with the industry will help in preparing both present and future students for a 33 career in the sector.
