Thoughts on Last Weekend's Production of The Elves and the Shoemaker Being in the play this year has been a very long, hard experience, but I'm really glad that I did it. It really helped to improve my acting skills and overall was a great experience for me. -Josiah Ungos (8th Grade) This was a wonderful learning experience for me. This also helped me get over my stage fright. -Keturah Arul (9th grade) This year was definitely a challenge for myself in drama, in more ways than one. It never occurred to me that I would be playing an elf in my acting career, but I can say now that I've crossed that off the bucket list! -Jillian Birdsong (10th grade) Working with the play this year has been an interesting challenge, as we had to re-order most of the props and backgrounds we used in the play due to the transfer from the old to the new school. The play has been a lot of fun to work on with the entirety of cast and crew, and I'm proud with what we have accomplished in such a short time with the daunting tasks we had to face to make the Elves and the Shoemaker a possibility. -Hayden Smith (11th grade) Hi, I’m Joelle, and I played the role of Mrs. Dumontingly in this year’s production of The Elves and the Shoemaker. As a junior in my third CDIS production, it was interesting to see the differences between previous years in audience, directors, cast, and crew
members. Though it was a bit chaotic in the making, the final production turned out well, and we thank everyone who came to support us! -Joelle Ungos (11th grade) If you missed the play, or want to see it again, good news! We have it on video for you to watch at home! You can click here or scan the QR code below :
CDIS is pleased to announce we will have internationally recognized author and speaker, Tanya Crossman, returning to speak about issues families have living cross- culturally. Tanya’s book, Misunderstood: The Impact of Growing Up Overseas in the 21st Century delves into the stories of the hundreds of TCKs she researched via interviews and surveys. As a result, Ms. Crossman is a sought after speaker with engagements all over the world, and we’re excited to give parents and students the opportunity to benefit from her work in a series of talks spread over two days. Please see the schedule below for the parents’ talks. All talks are free, and evening sessions are open to the public, so feel free to invite anyone you like!
Announcing the last High School Movie Night of the year! All high schoolers are invited to watch the movie ‘Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban' together on the rooftop of building B on the 12th of April from 7:30 to 10:00 p.m. We will have cozy couches and lots of food to share!
Dear Parents, We are aware that the central government has made a sudden change to the official May 1st holiday for 2019. Even so, our plan is to follow the schedule for that week as originally planned. We will have classes on April 29th and 30th, one day off on May 1st, and then classes again on May 2nd and 3rd. We want to maximize the number of instructional days in the school year and avoid having weekend makeup days. Thank you for your understanding! If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s divisional principal.
Parents, please be on the lookout for the DocBox in PowerSchool. The DocBox is where you will be able to find things like your child’s MAP scores, ECE report card, and the like. If you are expecting to see this information, be sure to check it regularly! If you can’t find what you need, please contact the registrar at registrar@cdischina.com. Fun with Kitchen Science!
On Tuesday morning, CDIS had the pleasure of being visited by New Zealand scientist, entertainer, and author, Dr. Michelle Dickinson! Dr. Dickinson shared fun science experiments using everyday things with the students in 2nd through 5th grades. Her new book, The Kitchen Science Cookbook, is full of ideas of fun and often tasty things kids can make themselves to learn about science processes like chemical reactions, friction, soundwaves, centripetal force, engineering, and thermodynamics. She showed the students how to make multicolored unicorn noodles, how to make a ‘chicken in a cup’, how to make sustainable and edible birthday candles, how to make a soda can implode, and even how she can appear to hold fire in the palm of her hand! (She was careful to tell the students that only very professionally trained scientists can do the last one.) She had some materials on hand to let boys and girls in the audience try some things out for themselves, and even invited some lucky students to the front to help her demonstrate. We’d like to give a big thank you to the New Zealand Consulate for their
support of Dr. Dickinson’s visit. We had a fantastic time learning more science! For more info, be sure to check out https://kitchensciencecookbook.com 2019 Senior Departure Seminar
Last weekend, the 12th grade class traveled to Beijing for three days for our Senior Departure Seminar. We enjoyed exploring the capital's historical sites, bonding as a class and with other iSC seniors, and preparing to say goodbye to CDIS. It was a great opportunity to reflect on our high school years and learn more about college life, and the keynote speaker (shout-out to Jerry Jones!) especially helped me start thinking practically about transition. -Tim Park, Student Council Chair
