WELCOME MESSAGE
GRAVEL & TAR CLASSIC
Welcome to friendly Feilding and the Manawatu!
A very warm welcome to the riders, support teams and
race officials to our piece of New Zealand cycling paradise.
Our region has pulled together to make this exciting
event happen, despite many such events being cancelled
in New Zealand and around the world. It is therefore a
privilege to host the La Femme race event, as the very
first women’s cycling race on the international calendar
for 2021. We are incredibly fortunate to be able to do so,
thanks to the awesome commitment and hard work from
the Gravel’n’Tar organisers, sponsors and volunteers.
This scenic race route starts in the heart of Feilding’s town
centre, in Manchester Square under our Millennium Clock
Tower. This provides an opportunity for our locals and
visitors alike, to enjoy our ‘friendly Feilding’ hospitality and
hopefully take some time out to enjoy what our vibrant,
attractive town and region has to offer.
Wishing everyone a safe and enjoyable cycling experience.
Yours sincerely
Helen Worboys
Mayor, JP

Tar races as our pinnacle annual event, highlighting
the benefits of cycling as a sport. Additionally, this
year we have widened the scope to include eight
events over the anniversary weekend to encourage
everyone – of all ages and physical abilities – to
participate in cycling under the banner of the
Manawatū Cycling Spree. Such events include a
Family Fun Ride, Youth Criterium and Mountain
Biking – there’s even a Retro Ride for vintage cycles
(and perhaps vintage cyclists!).
So many thanks to those participating in the Gravel
and Tar for acting as role models for others in the
Manawatū to follow.

OFFICE OF THE MAYOR
Palmerston North City Council
WELCOME MESSAGE
2021 GRAVEL AND TAR CLASSIC
Nau mai haere mai ki Manawatū -Welcome to Palmerston North City and the Manawatū!
On behalf of Palmerston North City, I’d like to welcome the teams, race officials, and
supporters to Palmerston North and the Manawatu region.
The Manawatu has a proud history of producing champion cyclists who have gone onto
excel on the world stage. The region also has a strong history of organising cycling events,
from funrides, junior tours, to elite cycling events. This Gravel & Tar race is gaining a
reputation as one of the hardest single-day races on the international calendar.
The city is proud to again support the Gravel and Tar Classic as the only one-day race on
the 2021 UCI Oceania Road Cycling Calendar. The race, now in its sixth year, will be just
the second men’s event for the year, and the first men’s one-day event. La Femme is the
first women’s UCI road race in the world for 2021. Considering the significant impact of
Covid-19 on cycling events, it’s a real credit to the determination of the race organisers
towards making the 2021 Palmerston North event happen.
Also new in 2021, a range of associated events have been grouped into the Manawatu
Cycling Spree, which provides activities for cyclists and enthusiasts of all levels.
If you are a visitor to the region we hope you will not only enjoy participating in the event,
but also the hospitality of both Feilding and Palmerston North City, and the fantastic
cycling friendly environment. Good luck and safe racing.
Ngā mihi
Grant Smith | Mayor

INTRODUCTION TO
THE GRAVEL AND TAR
UCI 1.2 RACES
I WOULD LIKE TO EXTEND A WELCOME THE RIDERS,
THEIR MANAGERS AND SUPPORTERS, RACE
OFFICIALS, AND CYCLING FANS TO THE MANAWATU.
Now in its 6th year, the Gravel and Tar races remain at UCI 1.2 status despite the
difficulties COVID-19 had brought to cycling and sport in general. They are the
first one-day races on the 2021 UCI international road cycling calendar; the La
Femme being the first women’s race of the year. As such, we expect significant
international interest even with the dearth of international participants.
Our races enable NZ trade teams to experience one-day racing at an
international level and vie for valuable UCI points. Notably, there are
a number of Gravel and Tar winners who have gone onto World Tour
professional contracts, including the two formers winners of La Femme.
I’d like to acknowledge the support from our event sponsors. Without that
involvement we could not produce this flagship cycling event. Particular
thanks goes to Palmerston North City Council and Manawatu District
Council for their support and hard work to make this event happen.
Special thanks goes to Professionals Real Estate for getting on board as
the naming rights sponsor for the Gravel and Tar UCI races. Thanks
also to the UCI and Cycling NZ for their encouragement to get the
event into the International Calendar once again .
To the race officials and other volunteers, thank you for your time
and commitment.
To the riders, thank you for coming; I hope you enjoy the race and
your stay in the Manawatu. Race hard, and enjoy the hospitality
and cycling-friendly environment that the region has to offer.
We hope we will see you back in years to come!
Dr Steve Stannard
