OUTLOOK - October 2020 www.holycrossandstcuthberts.church - Holy Cross & St Cuthbert's
Happenings
As we write, we are approaching the autumn equinox, so winter is
on its way. Probably too, tighter restrictions in our lives are on the
way. Many of us dread the idea of being cut off again from family
and friends, but it is essential to adhere to the rules to keep
ourselves and our loved ones safe.
Let’s begin with some ‘thank yous’ to people who are helping, or
have helped us.
We are most grateful to Yvonne Locker who was treasurer for Holy
Cross, and did such an outstanding job. Sadly no-one has come
forward to either take over as treasurer, or even to take on part of
the job. It looks as though we shall have to pay for professional
help.
Thank you too to Richard Wigham for killing off the weeds around
Holy Cross. Whenever we visit St. Cuthbert’s it is a joy to walk up
the church path past the lovely display of flowers.
Thank you to the Craft Ladies who are contributing money and
goods to support the church.
Our team of printers who copy and staple the magazine each month
also deserve a mention, as do our editors. We have had many kind
comments lately on how interesting and informative ‘Outlook’ has
been.
The Mothers’ Union may not be meeting at present, but that hasn’t
stopped them from supporting Holy Cross by donating £100
towards the refurbishment of the ciborium, which hold the breads
for communion.
We’re bound to have missed someone. Please let us know who it is.

Our six wardens met last week and decided to write to the Revd
Jeremy Thompson, our Area Dean to express our anxieties about the
future for St. Cuthbert’s and Holy Cross. We have asked for a
meeting and also the opportunity to hold our AGM. Both churches
have to elect wardens, PCC members, Deanery Synod
representatives, sidespersons and secretaries before 31st October. So
there are lots of posts to be filled, plenty of jobs for everyone!
Don’t be shy, get someone to nominate you. Please!

Thank you to everyone who has supported us this year. We hope that
you will also support us next year. The 100 Club new year begins in
December, one person has already paid his £60! There are a few
numbers free if you know of anyone who would like to join.

On Sunday 13th September we were privileged to have Bishop
Christine to preach and preside for Holy Cross Day. There were 33
people in church which really ought to send a message to the diocese
that there are people out west who not only need a priest but deserve
one!!!
Sunday 4th October is our Harvest Festival. We are meeting at St.
Cuthbert’s at 930am. Please join us, you are most welcome. We will
donate all the produce to the West Northumberland Foodbank.
Dried goods and tinned goods might be preferable.
Sadly, at the moment we have no guidance as to Remembrance
Sunday.
Stay Safe, trust in God.

My Coronavirus Diary
                            (and other observations)
Continuing my look back through my diary, writing my contemporary account, I am picking up
on selected dates from the end of April.
The Government is still some way short of the 100,000 tests per day promised by the end of
April: not all available tests are actually taken each day. About 5,000 new cases are being
identified and, on average, 650 people are dying in hospital every day. There are calls in the
media for an indication how the lockdown will be eased.
Monday,27th April, 9.30am. Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, makes a statement from the steps
of Number 10 as he returns to work: “this is the moment of maximum risk” and he urges the
nation not to “throw away” the hard-won gains of the past five weeks of social distancing. At
the daily briefing, for the first time, 2 members of the public ask a question as well as media
representatives. Health Secretary, Matt Hancock, announces a Lump-sum £60,000 for the
families of NHS and social care workers who have died from Covid-19.
A Panorama report highlights shortcomings of the, much-vaunted, Government pandemic
stockpile and claims advice on recommended purchases were ignored.
Wednesday 29th April. Boris Johnson misses Prime Minister’s Questions again – his fiancée
has given birth to a son. At the briefing the basis of reporting deaths will now include covid
deaths in all settings (not just hospitals), backdated, this adds 3,811 which makes the new
total 26,097.
On Friday, 1st May, Matt Hancock claims the testing target of 100,000 per day has been
reached in the previous 24 hours. However there is criticism when we learn that the 122,374
total includes 40,000 tests posted out and therefore not completed.
In the first week of May the Covid death toll topped 30,000, overtaking Italy; the total of cases
passed 200,000 from over 1 million tests; the number in hospital and the number of deaths
reported every day was declining. A mobile phone NHS tracing app has begun trials on the
Isle of Wight. A survey by Tearfund, has reported that 24% of adults had viewed or streamed
an act of worship since lockdown in March.
Friday 8th May: the 75th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day. After a national two-minute
silence at 11am, Prince Charles and Camilla lay a wreath at Balmoral as a lone piper plays. A
Spitfire flies over the white cliffs at Dover. At 3pm Winston Churchill’s VE Day address is
broadcast followed by a programme of contemporary testimonies and music from the garden
at 10 Downing St. More entertainment comes later from the forecourt at Buckingham Palace
which culminates at 9pm with a speech from HM The Queen (as her father had done in 1945).
She concludes with a reference to the Vera Lynn song ‘We’ll meet again’.
Sunday,10th May. Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, broadcasts an address at 7pm and
introduces five ‘alert levels’ (1= no covid; 5= threat to NHS being overwhelmed). The slogan
will change to “Stay Alert>Protect the NHS>Save Lives” in England but the rest of the UK will
keep “Stay Home>Protect the NHS>Save Lives”. He also outlines a timetable of stages to re-
lease some of the lockdown measures. Limits on time and range for exercise are removed;
some outdoor sports can resume (eg golf, tennis); schools will return in June and some hospi-
tality will re-open in July.
His address is widely criticised the next day as being vague and divisive. Teachers are
particularly aggrieved at the lack of consultation about the return to schools.
In the next 10 days garden centres and golf courses re-open; estate agents resume property
viewings and sales; in Sussex, a wild stork chick hatches – the first in Great Britain for over
600 years; unemployment figures pass 2 million.
‘Loss of taste and smell’ is added to the official list of symptoms of Covid-19.
Ascension Day, Thursday, 21st May. After pressure from his own backbenches and many
others, the NHS surcharge (up to £624 paid by foreign nationals in the UK) is
My Coronavirus Diary
                  (and other observations) continued...
waived for non-UK NHS and social-care workers. Ken and I clear and sweep the basement
areas at church – a case of descending on Ascension Day!
Over the next weekend, the media is full of stories about the PM’s adviser, Dominic Cummings,
who apparently has flouted the rules to travel to Durham with his wife and child. Boris Johnson,
unusually, leads the Sunday briefing to defend Cummings robustly – and, by the way,
announces the limited return to school for nursery, and Years 1 and 6 children in June and all
primary children before the end of term.
Monday, 25th May. In a unique twist, Dominic Cummings gives a press conference in the
garden at 10 Downing Street on a sunny Bank Holiday afternoon. He admits that the media
reports are essentially true. Bizarrely, he says he made a journey to Barnard Castle from his
parent’s cottage in order to test whether his eyesight would be OK to drive back to London.
When asked, he did not apologise or express regret.
His conference delays the daily briefing, again led by the PM, at which a further defence of his
adviser is mounted. Little attention is given to the 121 deaths announced or the proposed
re-opening of outdoor markets and department stores.
Cummings’ actions and lack of contrition dominate the government’s daily briefings and the
Prime Minister’s (first) appearance before the Commons, Liaison Committee.
Thursday 28th May. The PM ‘interposes himself’ when his scientific advisers are asked whether
the Cummings affair has undermined their message.
Saturday 30th May. Deputy Chief Medical Officer, Jonathan van Tam, says “in my opinion the
rules are clear, they have always been clear, they are for the benefit of all, they apply to all” in
response to a question at the daily briefing.
This is the last time he appears at the daily briefing.
The sunny weather this week has attracted crowds to beaches; the death of a black man,
George Floyd, killed while being arrested by a white police officer in Minneapolis has prompted
widespread protests; these gatherings are giving rise to concerns as social distancing is not
always observed. Nissan have announced the loss of 3,000 jobs, the closure of its Barcelona
factory and retention of the Sunderland plant. Some sports are to resume behind closed doors;
the Job Retention Scheme is extended with more flexibility for the 8 million people who are
currently furloughed.
Wednesday, 3rd June. The Home Secretary announces that from Monday 8th June entrants to
the UK will be required to self-isolate for 14 days unless arriving from countries or territories
that are exempt. The airlines and travel are very critical of this decision. At Prime Minister’s
Questions, Sir Keir Starmer accuses Boris Johnson of mistaking “scrutiny” for “attack” in an
angry exchange.
Saturday and Sunday 6th & 7th June. No Daily Downing Street briefing.
This weekend and next large crowds, ignoring restrictions, are attracted to anti-racism protests
and ‘raves’ in many places.
Tuesday 16th June. Under pressure from footballer, Marcus Rashford, and many Tory MPs the
government U-turn to provide free school meals in the summer holidays. The national data
shows that so far in 2020 there have been 64,000 more deaths than could have been

HALTWHISTLE YOUTH CLUB
Firstly, I would like to introduce myself as we are new to the Outlook
magazine. My name is Ayesha and I am a youth worker in
Haltwhistle. I work for the Young and Sweet charity which is based at
Hillside (bottom of the middle school bank). We thought it was a
good idea to keep you regularly informed of the young people’s
learning and what activities they have been up to whilst at youth club.
We currently have 96 members accessing the club once per week,
most recently the young people have taken part in tie dyeing, making
fudge, baking banana muffins and this week they took part in an
activity which developed their money management and preparation
skills. Each you person was given a budget where they had to buy
‘scrap’ the aim of the game was to create a casing for a raw egg so
that when it was rolled down the hill it wouldn’t smash! The young
people had to plan and decide what ‘scrap’ was best value for money
and would achieve their desired designs. It’s only fair to say there that
after some success there was a lot of raw egg flying about!

My memories of Di are confined to the past 20 years when we retired to the area. I met her when
on the Churches Together Committee and realised that her passion for Christians working together
was inspirational. Despite her debilitating health she found the strength to make the community a
better place by her many charitable works including her hospital visiting as well as providing
meals for neighbours and other good works.

Lately as a result of the usual Churches Together weekly prayer meetings (of which she was a
valued member) - being transferred from church she offered her home to the group. She
would welcome us surrounded by her oxygen bottle to support her breathing. At times gasping for
breath she kept us informed of those in need of prayers; the sick; our shopkeepers; the community
at large.
One of her last actions (before waiting to be hospitalized once again) was to set up a petition for a
residential home in the town. On the day of her death the Hexham Courant ran an article on a
possible site. Even in hospital she continued her letter writing despite her deteriorating health. A
true daughter of Haltwhistle.
May she rest in peace.
Veronica

Prayer Requests
Loving Lord, we pray for those still feeling vulnerable during this difficult
time. Embrace them with your loving arms.
Guide us, save us, keep us, for we have no help but thee. All praise to you
Lord Jesus Christ.
Please pray for the soul of Di Robison, a legend in this town for her goodness.
Father God, Lord Jesus and Holy Spirit, please bless all who visit this
beautiful church over the coming weeks. Fill them with your life-changing
love and kindness. Help them to know your presence and protection at this
time.
Lord, your church is a haven of peace and calm midst the chaos of the world
due to coronavirus, war and disasters. May everyone entering this church
feel your presence and be healed in mind, body and spirit.
Lord, as the Craft Group meets today fill the church with your wonderful
Holy Spirit. May everyone who comes into church today feel healed by your
spirit.
