Sneem Parish News 2020: Reflections on the coronavirus and other
news - deadline Friday, September 11
Sneem Parish News would like to record for f uture generations how lif e has
been aff ected in 2020 by the coronavirus pandemic. How has the lockdown af -
f ected you, your f amily, your work, your business? Have you learned how to use
Zoom or social media to stay in contact with f amily and f riends? Have you found
a renewed sense of community where f riends and neighbours are rallying
around to help one another, particularly those who most need a helping hand?
For those who remember rationing af ter the Second World War, to which the
current crisis has been likened by some people, how does it really compare?
And at the other end of the age scale, how are children f inding lif e away f rom
school and their f riends?
To ref lect what is happening in the parish during this most unusual of years,
send us your articles, poems and photos for inclusion in this year’s magazine.
Please submit these, along with reports f rom clubs and organisations, as well as
wedding photos, f amily photos, obituaries, etc. to Maidie O’Leary
(olearym7@gmail.com), Mary Margaret Casey (marymgtcasey@gmail.com) or
John Downing (johnpdowning@yahoo.com).
Due to the demands of our printers and the time required by the editors to pro-
duce the magazine, we will NOT be able to accept any material f or publication
af ter the deadline of Friday, September 11.

                      Sneem Story House Meeting
It has been suggested by Storied Kerry, a voluntary group established to promote
storytelling in the county, that Sneem should look at the possibility of having its
own Story House in the village. They f eel that it would be a logical development
of the very successf ul Sneem Storytelling Festival and could lead to earning the
title, “Kerry’s Story Village”. There seems to be a degree of enthusiasm and ener-
gy behind the idea. Cent ral to this project would be the availability of a suitable
site in the heart of the village, a clear vision of what a Story House would look
like, the f inancial viability of same and the extent of community support for such a
major project. Reverend Michael Cavanagh, Rector of the Church of the Transf ig-
uration, is willing to consider the possibility of having his church building adapted
to serve the dual purpose of a place of worship and a Story House.
To discuss these matters, a meeting of all interested parties will be held in the
Church of The Transf iguration on Thursday 6th August at 7. 00 p.m. If you hope
to attend please indicate in advance by text or email so that social distancing can
be implemented.

ICRR Charity Air Ambulance
There was great excitement last Thurs-
day (23rd July) when t he Charity Air
                                               Ambulance landed in the Convent
House garden on a medical emergen-
                                               cy in Sneem village.
ICRR Charity Air Ambulance was one
year in service on 30th of July. In its
f irst 12 months it has been tasked to
537 medical emergencies in 12 diff er-
ent counties. People might be aware
that it recently attended an emergency
in Sneem village. This service can be
in Sneem and the surrounding area
within 20minutes of receiving a 999 call which is very reassuring considering it
could take 45minutes to an hour for a road ambulance to attend. Due to its
speed this vital lif esaving service brings advanced paramedics f rom the National
Ambulance Service to the roadside, f arm or home very quickly and can reach
remote and inaccessible areas where road access may not be possible. Most
critically, the Charity Air Ambulance can bring the casualty to the hospital that
best suits their lif e saving needs, not just the closest geographically. From the
base in North Cork, the ICRR Charity Air Ambulance can put a 25,000km2 area
within 20 minut es of emergency medical care, it can be to Dingle in 30 minutes,
Sneem in 20 minutes and Caherciveen in 30 minutes. This service responds to
medical emergencies in Kerry every week and often a number of times per day.
Sneem native Jamie Casey (Bohocogram) lives close to the Helicopter Base in
North Cork and volunteers with the charity. He along with many others gives up
their f ree time as volunteer f ire f ighters to provide f ire and rescue cover during
the helicopter’s hours of operation. Two helicopters are used, one blue and
white and the other red and yellow. They alternate bet ween the two, so that
there is always one in service while the other is being serviced.
Many are aware of the Air Ambulance service, but some are surprised to hear it
is 100% charity f unded. The recent Covid 19 pandemic has put huge financial
pressure on the service as the usual f undraising events haven’t been able to
happen. The charity would be very gratef ul if the people of Sneem helped out by
donating. This can be done in a number of ways, there are collection boxes
(Red ones) in the village, in Dan Mur-
phy’s Bar, The Blue B ull, Sneem Phar-
macy, Sneem Post Office, and D J O’
Sullivan’s (Hillary’s). Onc e off or
monthly donations can also be made
online at https://www.icrr.ie/regularly -
donate/. People can also help by f und-
raising for the charity by contacting
(086) 8545873, (021) 4190999 or

Sneem Biodiversity Feasibility Study
Over the past year we have been working with Ian McGrigor f rom Gortbrack Organ-
ic Farm to come up with ways of f urther enhancing the biodiversity of Sneem Vil-
lage. During a number of site visits we have identif ied some key areas:
Sneem Digital Hub - wildf lower meadows have been developed on both sides of
the Hub and a wildlif e f riendly hedge has been planted at the back.
Wildlife Garden - we have succeeded in leasing the f ield adjacent to St. Michael’s
Church carpark and have developed a plan to turn this space into a wildlif e garden
and performance space utilising the natural rock to create an amphitheatre - a mod-
el f or this was previously on display in the Resource Centre. We have recently ap-
plied for Clár f unding for this development - see plan on pages 10 and 11.
Sneem Community Orchard - we have a plan f or creating a community orchard in
the f ield behind the Fire Station in Seaview adjoining St. Michael’s National School.
We are currently working on getting a lease and f unding in place with the view to
planting over the winter months as a community project.
                                                                           Page 9

Sneem Digital Hub
Waiting Lists At Sneem Digital Hub
We are delighted to report that the Hub has been pretty much at capacity
throughout July, the downside being we have had to turn some people down in
order to retain social distancing requirements.
We were planning an original Covid capacity of 12 people, thinking this would be
more than enough but demand has been so high that we have incrementally
been adding additional space such that we now have 16 socially distanced desks
and we’ve even had people working in the kitchen throughout this past week.
We’ve had a great variety of people with diff erent business types and roles – e.g.
CEOs, Solicitors, Finance Directors, Project and Programme Managers, Invest-
ment Managers, Financial Analysts, Global Environmental Manager, Communi-
cations Manager, Engineer, Underwriter, HR Manager etc. in industries such as
pharmaceutical, banking, investments, construction, charity, insurance, tech, edu-
cation, advertising, weddings, food manuf acturing etc. It has been wonderf ul to
have so much activity in the hub and the f eedback has been hugely positive. It
has also been great to know that we have up to 17 additional people each day
spending time and money in the village. With Remote Working now being widely
accepted by employers, employees and government alike as being a central part
of the f uture of working, there is a huge opportunity to bring people in to and back
to the area to live and work. There are several companies purely hiring people on
a remote working basis and many more aff ording f lexible working arrangements
to the right candidates. On top of that the unf ortunate enf orcement of remote
working on so many of us in recent months has helped many employers and em-
ployees to realise that their jobs can be carried out f rom anywhere … and where
 better than Glorious South Kerry?

Introducing Owen
Owen O’Byrne is a perf ect
example of the type of prof es-
sional person we are looking
to welcome into the local
community. Owen spent time
in the Hub last year and has
since moved to Blackwater.
He, his wif e and 3 children
have wanted to move to Kerry
for many years and the avail-
ability of remote working as
an option has f inally enabled
this dream to become a reali-
ty.
Owen is Chief Product Off icer
with Fire.com who provide
banking services for SMEs, corporates and f intech companies.
Owen and his f amily love the space and privacy they now enjoy in comparison
to living in Dublin. The natural beauty of the area and the access to the nearby
wonderf ul beaches contribute to the improved quality of lif e that the f amily are
enjoying and Owen just loves the headspace provided by being able to just sit
outside and enjoy the birdsong and nature at work.
On the Hub experience, Owen said that it is a great f acility of perf ect size, add-
ing that he particularly appreciates the great connection quality and that he
f eels very much reassured by the measures in place as a result of Covid.
Despite much initial resistance, Owen f inally consented that if anyone wished
to buy him a pint in the Blackwater Tav ern he would graciously accept same.

While we have been extremely busy over recent weeks it has been particularly
gratifying to hear people starting so many of their video calls telling others
where t hey’re working f rom and singing the praises of the area and the Hub as
a f acility, in particular comments such as ”I wish I had known about this before”
and “this is how I plan to spend my f uture summers”. My personal f avourite
was someone who works as a Director with a huge pharmaceutical company
based in Cork saying “I had to come all the way to Sneem to get the best
broadband”.
