PRESIDENT REPORT - APRIL 2021 DON’T FORGET HALL CLOSED GOOD FRIDAY The first quarter of another eventful year is done and dusted!! Much uncertainty exists regarding the dreaded COVID and we are hoping that our planned events such as ANZAC Dawn Service and RiverFest are not impacted. However, we are mindful of the amount of hard work that goes into organising these events and will make decisions accordingly as more information comes to hand, ie if we have a choice!! However, at this stage our ANZAC Day Dawn Service will take place this year at the hall. Service starts at 5.55am conducted by Aaron from the Salvation Army and this will be followed by a Gunfire Breakfast in the hall for a gold coin donation. Retired Lieutenant Commander Peter Dore will be chairing the event this year in my absence, ably assisted by our Treasurer, Retired Chief Petty Officer, Jeanne Wilson. The Navy Cadets will also be attending – a big thank you to all participants. The April Open Mic night has been cancelled but the night on Saturday 15 May is shaping up to be fantastic. Stay tuned for more information next month on this. The event is sponsored by Fraser Coast RV Park and Ultra Music. RHPA is hosting the event. COUNCILLOR Division 7 NEWS Well Easter is just about with us! Not sure what has happened, but Easter is with us already. The year is flying by! We are in the thick of reviewing the planning scheme, developing the 21/22 Budget and the Pialba Town Centre Revitalisation Project - to name but a few of the major projects under way. Dog Parks Have had a number of residents enquire about dog parks in the region so I thought I’d share a link to the Council for all, so everybody is up with the latest information and locations https:// www.frasercoast.qld.gov.au/dog-off-leash-areas . Fraser Coast Engagement Hub As I have previously mentioned, you may have noticed Council has been asking for community input on a few matters and this will continue. I really encourage residents to keep an eye on the Fraser Coast Engagement Hub website https://frasercoast.engagementhub.com.au/ for opportunities to be involved. It is important that we hear from as many residents as possible when we are planning projects for the future. Brolga Theatre As things start to get back to a new normal around the region, I want to remind you about the shows that are coming up at the Brolga Theatre in the coming months. John Williamson, Human Nature and the Ten Tenors are just the start of the popular entertainers heading our way. You can register for the Brolga Theatre’s Enewsletters, purchase tickets, gift vouchers and Friends of the Brolga memberships online at brolgatheare.org by phoning 4122 6060 or in person at the Box office between 8.30am and 4pm Monday to Friday. Welcome, and many thanks again to the River Heads Progress Association for inviting me to be part of this wonderful community publication. I’m pleased to report that the Hervey Bay electorate has seen a renewed focus from Palaszczuk Government ministers this month. These visits give our community great opportunities to highlight the growing needs of the Bay. Since my last message we’ve received visits from the Deputy Premier, and both the Minister and Assistant Minister for Health, announcing millions in funding for projects for the Hervey Bay electorate, i.e. Works for Queensland, our ambulance station and extra funding for our hospital services. I can now share that we’ve been successful in another great outcome that will help focus on our energy needs. Large scale battery trial for Hervey Bay I am passionate about keeping our environment as pristine as we can and about delivering cost effective services to our electorate, so I'm pleased to confirm that Ergon Energy’s Urangan substation is one of five sites chosen to examine the potential for battery storage of electricity within our local grid. This will help the Hervey Bay electorate get the maximum advantage from our rooftop solar systems and further our claim to be the Solar Capital of Australia. Ergon Energy’s Urangan substation was chosen due to using a proven delivery model for network-connected batteries, like that used at Bohle Plains in Townsville, which has a 4MW/8MWh Tesla battery system. Our trial will investigate benefits across both the electricity transmission and distribution networks, plus it will also offer increased opportunities for local Queensland businesses who support electrical trades and technical training. If successful, Energy Queensland could deploy distribution batteries in locations right across the state. Funds for Community Projects River Heads is a beautiful spot with lots of activities going on. If you’re reading this and belong to a not-for-profit group that needs funding for an item or project between $500 and $35,000, I encourage you to go online and check out www.justice.qld.gov.au/grants to apply for the next round of funding (closes April 30). I’m pleased to report that in the last round the fund has given more than $12 million to Queensland, with clubs in the Hervey Bay electorate receiving more than $100,000 for equipment and facilities. If you’ve got a great idea to make your club, better, safer or stronger please be sure to complete the application. All the best from me, stay safe and thanks for reading. Adrian Page 5

(Sue Watson) There are three core Christian virtues that are a pillar of stability for believers, especially in these turbulent times. They are ‘divinely powerful weapons’: Peace, joy and love. But as Apostle Paul states in his letter to the church at Corinth “the greatest of these is Love”. There is no greater peace that we can have than knowing the love of God. There is no greater joy that we can have than bringing His love to others. Because ‘God is love’, His love is the highest expression of who He is. When we abide in His love we attain the highest realization of what we were created for - to receive His love and to carry it to others. The ‘greatest commandment’ is to love God. The second greatest is to love one another. Therefore, the measure of a successful human life will be by how much we love Him, and then by how much we love others. Love is more than an emotion, not just a noun, but also an action verb. Love that is, also does. God proved His love by allowing His Son to die for us in order that we might not come under the judgement that was already in the world. Paul writes: “If I have the gift of prophecy, and know all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give all my possessions to feed the poor, and if I surrender my body to be burned, but do not have love, it profits me nothing” (I Corinthians 13:2-3). If we do not keep the love for God first, our love for others will be corrupted. When we start to esteem the love for others above our love for God, our love and our works will become idols. Then they result in self-centeredness, becoming possessive, and the opposite of true love that gives. May we fully understand the true meaning of Easter this year: The ultimate act of love by a Creator who loves us. Page 7
Another month has come and gone. One quarter of 2021 passed already! The weather forecast for our March competition was dismal so only a small number of members fished. Of course, as is often the way, the weather did not live up to the forecast and it was in fact mostly good weather for the weekend of 5-7 March 2021. 7 intrepid fishers weighed in and there were some very good fish amongst them including a club record set by Darryl Smith with an 83cm Mack Tuna. Brett Drysdale’s Coral Trout Darryl Smith’s Mack Tuna Darryl’s record was the second set this year. The first one being by Brett Drysdale with a 60cm Coral Trout. Despite Darryl’s record fish, the outstanding fish for the March competition caught by a senior member was Bert Flierman’s 82cm cod. Congratulations to Bert and Darryl and to all members who weighed in. The Club usually holds a social meet on a Sunday in the middle of the month with a BBQ back at the shed. March’s social meet was held on Sunday 21 March 2021 with again only a small number of members fishing but a few more attending the BBQ. Fish caught during a social meet are eligible for a Perpetual Trophy if they are the longest of the species weighed in during the year. On our March social meet Jukka Heikkinen caught a 78cm Blackhall which will be in contention for the Perpetual Trophy for that species. Congratulations on a great catch Jukka but it is still early days! Anyone interested in joining the club can make initial contact with the club by email to riverheadsfishingclub@gmail.com.au . Until next month – may your line be tight, knots strong and hooks sharp. Stay safe on the water. The Editor – River Heads Fishing Club Inc. Page 8

WILDLIFE MATTERS (Wildlife QLD Fraser Coast) A Real Aussie Battler One little creature I have seen waddling the road in this region was an echidna. Unfortunately they don't always make it across the road! Despite the fact that we think of echidnas as primitive (monotremes evolved when dinosaurs were still around) the little animals are very successful organisms in the Australian environment. Photo by Belinda Rafton They are found all over Australia and southern Papua. Surprisingly for a small animal, they are very long lived – at least 50 years. They have excellent survival skills that suit them to our continent of drought and flooding rains. Echidnas are quite good swimmers. At the other end of the scale, in a bushfire, echidnas burrow into the soil and can survive even if the tips of their spines get melted! In late summer and autumn, when the environment is dry and unproductive, echidnas hibernate to save energy. An echidna copes with most predators by quickly digging vertically into the soil and wedging its body so that dingoes, goannas and other predators can't get at it. Sadly this does not protect it from cars or bulldozers clearing its habitat for yet more human settlement. The best time to see echidnas is spring when a group of hopeful males trail around behind the female (an echidna train). When the female is ready to mate, the strongest male pushes contenders aside and mates with the female. The female lays an egg about 1.6 cm in diameter which she carries is a pouchlike structure on the belly. The egg hatches into a tiny foetus-like hatchling after 10 days. Echidnas - like whales - lack teats so the young sucks milk from patches on mum's belly. The baby echidna or puggle leaves (or is made to leave!) the pouch once it starts growing spines.* The scientific name of the echidna is Tachyglossus aculeatus. ‘Aculeatus’ means spiny, and ‘Tachyglossus’ means ‘fast tongue’. Echidnas have no teeth and an almost fused tube like mouth so the long thin tongue is vital. I was lucky enough to visit a wildlife sanctuary and see attendants feeding the cutest echidna with insect mix. Its long, quick, bright pink tongue lapped up the tucker. In the wild, a healthy echidna can eat 40,000 white ants or ants per day. Good on them! *Australian Geographic Nov-Dec 2020 P 66. The Ultimate Survivor by John Pickrell. Page 11

We desperately need your property to sell!!! We have sold so many properties over the past 9 months that we are just about out of stock and have a long list of buyers wanting to buy now! If you are sitting on a half acre block then we have plenty of buyers willing to pay top dollar! In fact we have numerous buyers looking to buy houses in Turtle Cove up to $700,000! There have been no signs of the market slowing down over recent months with southerners still flocking to our area. At a property industry meeting this week in Hervey Bay, River Heads and Booral were pipped as the 3rd highest growth potential area on the Fraser Coast over the next 5 years. The rental crisis is continuing to worsen with very few rentals coming available over the past month and huge amounts of people looking for permanent accommodation. If you are considering of taking advantage of the property boom and are wondering what your property might be worth please contact us on 4125 7777 and chat with one of our experienced agents. Page 20
