             The story so far…

The G7 stands for the ‘Group of Seven’ and is a
gathering of government leaders from some of
the world’s richest nations.

The countries which make up the G7 have met
each year since the 1970s. The 2021 summit will
be the 47th meeting to take place and the first
to be held in the UK since 2013.

               The story so far…

The prime ministers and presidents from the G7
countries meet annually to discuss problems facing the
world – including economic issues, health emergencies
and the climate crisis.

They are part of a group of nations who seek to co-
operate with each other on important matters such as
climate change, recovery from the coronavirus
pandemic and world debts.

It is not just leaders from these seven countries who
will attend though - representatives from Australia,
India, South Korea and the EU will also be at the event
as guests.

The TV presenter and wildlife expert, Sir David
Attenborough, spoke to the leaders gathered in
Cornwall on Sunday as they set out plans to improve
the global environment.

Climate change is one of the key issues the leaders are
discussing during their three-day stay in Cornwall's
Carbis Bay, but ahead of Sunday's meeting, Sir David
has warned that humans could be "on the verge of
destabilising the entire planet".

The G7 are expected to promise to almost halve their
carbon emissions by 2030 from the levels seen in each
country in 2010.
Articles of the Week

                 Articles 10 and 22
Our Articles this week link to World Refugee Day which has
been recognised by the United Nations since 2001.

A refugee is someone who has had to flee their home because
their lives were in danger in their home country. There are
many different reasons for this and we will explore some of
them in the activities coming up. World Refugee Day is on
20th June 2021 and helps to raise awareness of the lives and
experiences of refugees.

This year’s theme is ‘Together we heal, learn and shine.’
Articles of the Week

                    Articles 10 and 22
Article 10 (family reunification)
Governments must respond quickly and sympathetically if a child or
their parents apply to live together in the same country. If a child’s
parents live apart in different countries, the child has a right to visit
and keep in contact with both of them.

Article 22 (refugee children)
If a child is seeking refugee or has refugee status, governments must
provide them with appropriate protection and assistance to help them
enjoy all the rights in the Convention. Governments must help refugee
children who are separated from their parents to be reunited with
them.
