This Week in Our World… This week the focus of ‘Our World’ is the G7 Summit which took place in Cornwall from 11-13 June 2021. The G7 is made up of seven countries - the UK, the United States, Germany, France, Canada, Italy and Japan.
The G7 Summit The story so far… The G7 stands for the ‘Group of Seven’ and is a gathering of government leaders from some of the world’s richest nations. The countries which make up the G7 have met each year since the 1970s. The 2021 summit will be the 47th meeting to take place and the first to be held in the UK since 2013.
The G7 Summit The story so far… The prime ministers and presidents from the G7 countries meet annually to discuss problems facing the world – including economic issues, health emergencies and the climate crisis. They are part of a group of nations who seek to co- operate with each other on important matters such as climate change, recovery from the coronavirus pandemic and world debts.
The G7 Summit 2021 It is not just leaders from these seven countries who will attend though - representatives from Australia, India, South Korea and the EU will also be at the event as guests. The TV presenter and wildlife expert, Sir David Attenborough, spoke to the leaders gathered in Cornwall on Sunday as they set out plans to improve the global environment.
The G7 Summit 2021 Climate change is one of the key issues the leaders are discussing during their three-day stay in Cornwall's Carbis Bay, but ahead of Sunday's meeting, Sir David has warned that humans could be "on the verge of destabilising the entire planet". The G7 are expected to promise to almost halve their carbon emissions by 2030 from the levels seen in each country in 2010.
