Payneham Road Uniting Church 16 May 2021– Easter 7 Welcome to our Multicultural Church at 10 am Our minister is Rev. Do Young Kim Psalm 1 This psalm is the introduction to the book of the psalms in all its diversity. The central theme of this particular psalm is theological rather than purely moral. It speaks of two ways in which humans can exist: one orientated towards God, and the other orientated towards the self. Those orientated towards God delight in understanding what is here translated from the Hebrew as "the law". What the law refers to is the "Torah", but the Torah has a much wider meaning that what we today associate with the concept of the law. The word comes from the concept of teaching, and means the entire instruction that God has given to humanity through Israel as to how to live in accordance with what God has done and taught and how God has given guidance, over the centuries. Those who are orientated towards God find blessing in that holistic way of understanding and experiencing life. Their lives are constantly turned towards God and God's ways, and in that they find meaning and happiness. Those who primarily turn in on themselves, and rely entirely on their own ingenuity, skills, and shrewdness, without any reference to God, actually find themselves outside the boundaries of God's blessings.
