OPENING DAY 2021 TRANSFORMING LIVES THROUGH HEALING, EQUITY, AND SOCIAL JUSTICE WELCOME We welcome you to our virtual Opening Day as we embark upon our “call to action” agenda for the 2021-2022 academic year. The recent commemoration of ELAC’s 75th anniversary offers us an unparalleled opportunity to embrace the many milestones accomplished as well as to reflect on the issues of equal rights, current injustices, and the underlying impact of Covid-19. The focus of Opening Day is building a campus ethos and an equity-minded community by assessing and promoting system reform, policies and practices that foster healing through social justice initiatives. By addressing the inequitable experiences of trauma and oppression within our historically underserved and underrepresented students and employees of color, we can then begin the journey and implement action steps to bring all students and employees to succeed and thrive. With that in mind, today’s workshops emphasize culturally responsive teaching and practices to make learning encounters more relevant and effective for our students. Overall, this professional learning day will inform faculty and staff how to create system-level change on our campus through innovation, networks, reflection, and mindfulness. 4
