CHRISTMAS HAMPERS 2020 Thank you for all your dona=ons. They have been greatly appreciated! We were able to put together very nice food ham- pers in spite of cutbacks due to COVID. I received very nice comments from people that have received them. They were very grateful and a few have said it was the best hamper they ever received and the items were just what they needed. It warms my heart that I had your support to make these seniors’ Christmas a happy one! A big thanks to Dave and Darleen for all their help! Merry Christmas and stay safe and healthy! Sonia Provenzano Filling the Gap Coordinator Here are some pictures from Saturdays Hamper delivery. We had 8 teams of two delivering 26 hampers, plus a few helpers in the centre. It was a beau=ful day and everything went well. The seniors that received hampers were very happy and very thankful. Sev- eral said they were the best hampers they have ever received. I will list their names in my report, which I will work on over the weekend. What a great staff and group of Volunteers we have. Thank you to all. Hampers included a ham, potatoes, onions, carrots, cucumber, le2uce, bread, milk, bu2er, eggs, bananas, cheese, apples, cupcakes, a giI card plus a large box of assorted dry goods and a Christmas present. THANK YOU to those who helped pull this off. Have a Very MERRY CHRISTMAS and a VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR. Hopefully next year will be be2er. Cheers Dave 3
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR MESSAGE Hello everyone, In this New Year I am wishing you and your family a happy, healthy and abundant 2021! I hope that you spent Christmas with your relatives and in a family atmosphere. 2020 was not the best year and I could write and write about it, but that is the past and not worth mentioning. I would like to thank everyone for their spiritual and financial support, for your help in preparing and cooking lunches and din- ners, in delivering these meals, for helping to disinfect the club, wash dirty cloths and kitchen aprons. Thank you for your help with filing minutes and scanning. Thanks to this help I was able to create electronic files, which are more secure than keeping such important documents in the garage. Thank you very much for your help with the preparation of Christmas Hampers under Sonia's supervision - great job. We re- ceived many thank-you calls. The seniors were very grateful for this generosity. But all this, is thanks to you, dear members, and sponsors because without you, we would not be able to do it. Thank you very much, Jodi, from Crave Cookies & Cup- cakes, Safeway staff, Jewish Center and Rocky Mountain Church of Christ. These organizations made the Christmas hampers very special. I do not want to mention names because there are so many, and I would not like to omit anyone. In 2020, from April to December, we served over 2,400 lunches for free: all thanks to United Way financial help. Thanks to these funds we were able to do something beautiful for our vulnerable seniors. Thank you very much to my colleagues for the great work they do. I can count on each of you and it is my great privilege that I can be part of such a nice team. Please stay healthy, safe and happy. We, as a strong community can achieve this together. To everyone born in January, I wish you good health, love, peace, happiness and joy. Happy New Year! Renata Michalski FOLLOWING THE ALBERTA HEALTH GUIDELINES AND NEW RESTRICTIONS, THE CENTER IS CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE. We have some programs through ZOOM online (Yoga, Fit to Age, Ladies Coffee, Men's Coffee, Happy Hours). Thanks for your understanding. 4

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN January 2021 – HAPPY NEW YEAR and Good Bye 2020. Hopefully 2021 will be a much be2er year than 2020. We closed, we opened, we opened some more then we shut down. Hopefully in the New Year we will be able to reopen. All renova=ons have been completed. The club looks wonderful. We have had to replace the Hot Water Heater and four of the Furnaces. I am sure the ghosts of past members are wondering where are all the people who want to come and enjoy this lovely place. We will be back. Through the past 10 months we have put out magnificent lunches and wonderful TGIF dinners. Thanks to our Mas- ter Chef Ti=ana, the staff and volunteers who made this happen. Thank You to all the volunteers who peeled carrots and potatoes, washed dishes, helped cook and deliver the lunches and dinners, the list goes on and on. THANK YOU! We could not have done this without you. We were able to have a few programs run over the summer and they will be back along with others, hopefully soon. In July we had a drive through Stampede Breakfast. This was enjoyed by all. In December, 26 Christmas Hampers were put together and delivered by 8 teams on Saturday December 19 to sen- iors in the community. Thank you to all those who helped. Thank you to all those who donated to this cause. The response was tremendous with lots and lots of Thank Yous. And a SPECIAL THANK YOU to our wonderful Staff who worked diligently to keep things going although the doors were closed. We have lost a few members over this past year and we will remember our friends when we reopen. So, in closing, hopefully you had a Very MERRY CHRISTMAS even though it would have been very quiet. And Lets all have a Prosperous and HAPPY NEW YEAR. We will overcome this pandemic. Take Care, Stay Safe, Stay Warm and Stay Strong. Un=l next month; Cheers Dave 6

Winter is finally upon us - keep warm inside Living in a cold house, apartment, or other building can cause hypothermia. If someone you know lives alone, pay attention to the inside temperature and to whether that person is dressed warmly enough. People who are sick may have special problems keeping warm. Even if you keep your temperature between 60°F and 65°F, your home or apartment may not be warm enough to keep you safe. This is a special problem if you live alone because there is no one else to feel the chilliness of the house or notice if you are having symptoms of hypothermia. Here are some tips for keeping warm while you're inside: • Set your heat to at least 68–70°F. To save on heating bills, close off rooms you are not using. Close the vents and shut the doors in these rooms, and keep the basement door closed. Place a rolled towel in front of all doors to keep out drafts. • Make sure your house is not losing heat through windows. Keep your blinds and curtains closed. If you have gaps around the windows, try using weather stripping or caulking to keep the cold air out. • Dress warmly on cold days even if you are staying in the house. Throw a blanket over your legs. Wear socks and slippers. • When you go to sleep, wear long underwear under your pajamas, and use extra covers. Wear a cap or hat. • Make sure you eat enough food to keep up your weight. If you do not eat well, you might have less fat under your skin. Body fat helps you stay warm. • Alcoholic drinks can make you lose body heat. Drink alcohol moderately if not at all. Ask family or friends to check on you during cold weather. If a power outage leaves you without heat, try to stay with a relative or friend. You may be tempted to warm your room with a space heater. But, some space heaters are fire hazards, and others can cause carbon monoxide poisoning. Some illnesses may make it harder for your body to stay warm. Thyroid problems can make it hard to maintain a normal body temperature. Diabetes can keep blood from flowing normally to provide warmth. Parkinson's disease and arthritis can make it hard to put on more clothes, use a blanket, or get out of the cold. Memory loss can cause a person to go outside without the right clothing. Talk with your doctor about your health problems and how to prevent hypothermia as taking some medicines and not being active also can affect body heat. What Are the Warning Signs of Hypothermia? Sometimes it is hard to tell if a person has hypothermia. Look for clues. Is the house very cold? Is the person not dressed for cold weather? Is the person speaking slower than normal and having trouble keeping his or her balance? Watch for the signs of hypothermia in yourself, too. You might become confused if your body temperature gets very low. Talk to your family and friends about the warning signs so they can look out for you. Early signs of hypothermia: • Cold feet and hands • Puffy or swollen face • Pale skin • Shivering (in some cases the person with hypothermia does not shiver) • Slower than normal speech or slurring words • Acting sleepy Being angry or confused 8
Later signs of hypothermia: • Moving slowly, trouble walking, or being clumsy • Stiff and jerky arm or leg movements • Slow heartbeat • Slow, shallow breathing Blacking out or losing consciousness Call 9-1-1 right away if you think someone has warning signs of hypothermia. What to do after you call 9-1-1: • Try to move the person to a warmer place. • Wrap the person in a warm blanket, towels, or coats—whatever is handy. Even your own body warmth will help. Lie close, but be gentle. • Give the person something warm to drink, but avoid drinks with alcohol or caffeine, such as regular coffee. • Do not rub the person's legs or arms. • Do not try to warm the person in a bath. Do not use a heating pad. 9
