This gentle course takes you through some amazing trails and forestry roads. We have plotted the most diverse, enjoyable (yet entirely doable) RUN/WALK route from Geyser to Blue Lake. Starting at Pohutu Geyser, Te Puia, you will go from trail forestry roads to goat track then in to the magical native bush lands above Blue Lake. Just when it looks like the trail stops, the adventure starts as we will take you into the unknown as you go “off trail”, we will even provide ropes to assist ADVENTURE you as you traverse the ridge line above the lake. It does not matter if are a first timer or a competitive athlete. 1010 tarawera trail marathon &50k START TO PUARENGA 2017 TARAWERA TRAIL MARATHON & 50K | TIKITAPU TRAIL RUN 7 KM SINGLE TRACK, FORESTRY ROADS The event starts in the Whakarewarewa Thermal Field, Te Puia. You will run through the thermal field and under a tunnel which leads straight into the Hemo Gorge Track. Continue on single track trails through Hemo Gorge and past the Waipa Mountain bike area, over the bridge and onto the Yellow Track through the Redwood Grove, Bakers Hollow and then Nursery Road. Follow Nursery Road to through the Puarenga Stream Track to the first aid station ‘Puarenga’ at the intersection of the Puarenga Stream Track and Nice Road. PUARENGA TO GREEN LAKE PICNIC 7 TO 14 KM FORESTRY ROADS, MARKED ROUTE It’s a gently uphill on Reservoir Road, then along Ring Road through ‘Tim’s climb’ in the Forest south of the Pondy Mountain bike tracks, over the forestry road summit. At the summit, grab a drink before dropping down to the Green Lake Picnic area via Pondy Road. THE WOODSTOCK LOOP 50KM ONLY 14 TO 28KM FARM TRACKS, FORESTRY ROADS, SINGLE TRACK, MARKED ROUTE, SEALED ROAD Leaving Green Lake Picnic, you stay along Green Lake for only a short time before veering right and onto Mossy Track. At the high point of Mossy, you follow a marked route to the Woodstock Farm Boundary. Follow the ridgeline along Woodstock Farm. You run right through the middle of the property ascending all the way to the Woodstock Woolshed before plunging down through little farm tracks to Green Lake and tracing the western shore of the lakefront back to the Green Lake Picnic Station. GREEN LAKE PICNIC TO BURIED VILLAGE 20 OR 28KM TO 27KM OR 35KM FORESTRY ROADS, SEALED ROAD, SINGLE TRACK Leaving Green Lake Picnic for the second time you climb over bridges through a large forest on the hill overlooking the lake before plunging down the steps to the water’s edge. The route takes you alongside Lake Rotokakahi (Green Lake) until you meet Tarawera Road. From here you continue along the road (watch for cars) until entering the Tarawera Trailhead and the archaeological site of Buried Village. tarawera trail marathon & 50k 1111 2017 TARAWERA TRAIL MARATHON & 50K | TIKITAPU TRAIL RUN TARAWERA TRAILHEAD TO HOTWATER BEACH 28KM OR 35KM TO FINISH SINGLE TRACK TRAIL The trail plunges quickly from the high plateau with the waterfall visible on your left as you descend. The twisty turny trail follows the southern shore of Lake Tarawera underneath Pohutukawa along Kotukutuku Bay, Hawaiki Bay and to Twin Creeks at Te Hinau Bay where you can fill your water bottles from the natural springs. From there is more beautiful single track along Lake Tarawera and inland as you cross over the Wairua stream and up the final climb before descending to Hotwater beach at Te Rata Bay, Lake Tarawera. Enjoy a soak in the natural hotpools or a swim in the lake before taking a boatride back to the Landing at Lake Tarawera. If you don’t have someone to collect you, we’ll have buses going back to Rotorua at regular intervals. MARATHON & 50K START LINE Pohutu Geyser, Te Puia, Hemo Road, Rotorua. There will be fruit and drinks at the finish-line for runners and walkers. We will have limited food for sale. Please bring cash.
