THE GRAPE CRUSH On Saturday, March 7, just after the Grand Parade, see the iconic Stanthorpe Border Post Grape Crush. Outside the Post Office, the main street becomes the stage for this display of gladiator-style grape crushing. There are no rules in the Grape Crush – the contestant who can squeeze the grapes between their toes the fastest is crowned champion. But watch out! Don’t stand too close or you could experience more of the Grape Crush than you bargained for. CELEBRITY GRAPE CRUSH: We see a little undignified behaviour with our dignitaries as this no-holds-barred event takes place. MEDIA GRAPE CRUSH: TV, radio or print media. Which one is the fastest and strongest to beat out their rivals? CHANNEL 7 CELEBRITY GUEST CHANNEL 7 celebrities Livio Regano and Joanne Desmond will be celebrity guests at the 2020 Apple and Grape Harvest Festival. As Channel 7 weatherman, Livio is a familiar face on local screens, keeping viewers up to date with weather forecasts, with a frequent nod to the Granite Belt as the coldest region in the state. Livio has also been a popular guest at previous Apple and Grape Harvest Festivals. Festival visitors can enjoy meeting and chatting to Livio at festival events such as the Channel 7 Grand Parade, The Border Post Grape Crushing Championships and the Heritage Bank Food and Wine Fiesta. STANTHORPE RSL BAND PARADES MARCHING bands galore will brighten the carnival area on festival Saturday. The traditional morning parades will feature brass bands, pipe bands and the thunderous sound of marching drum bands. One hundred and twenty pipers and drummers from Armidale, Scots College, Toowoomba, Warwick, Brisbane and Stanthorpe will perform their best march tunes and gather as a massed band. Then, 110 brass band musicians from Stanthorpe, Warwick City, Toowoomba, Brisbane and the services bands of Royal Australia Army and Royal Australian Navy will lift carnival spirits. Adding great marching performances will be Bundaberg Drum Corps and Redland Ladies Drum Corps and the Bands of St Joseph’s College Gregory Terrace. Morning parades start at 11am and all bands will appear in the Channel 7 Grand Parade at 2pm. The massed band performances after the grand parade are a perennial favourite and the pipe band rendition of Amazing Grace is a special festival moment. The band of the 1st Regiment of the Royal Australian Artillery will provide two special performances during the festival. On Saturday, March 7, in Maryland St, for one hour prior to the fireworks there will be an amazing performance of some favourite tunes, and as a special treat the band will form part of the morning stage performances on Sunday, March 8, at the Heritage Bank Wine and Food Fiesta. The Royal Australian Army Band will perform on a special stage near Carnarvon Bridge from 6.30-7.30pm – another concert not to be missed. It is a first for the festival to have the army band perform and it will be a whole new entertainment experience for festival-goers. • Spacious powered and unpowered sites • ‘Drive through’ sites with fire pit • Pet friendly sites & cabins • Luxury water front apartments • Great fishing, swimming & canoeing 7132631aa WDNE01Z01FE - V0 20

THE LIFEBLOOD OF OUR FESTIVAL! VOLUNTEERS are said to be the backbone of our community. They are generally the true heroes who are constantly ready and willing to contribute their own personal time, talents and energy to help make the Apple and Grape Harvest Festival a success. Two hundred volunteers help the festival with a host of tasks. More importantly, volunteers become ambassadors for the region - promoting what it means to be part of the community and encouraging others to make a valuable contribution. The committee thanks all the volunteers for the time and effort each and every one of these people puts into the festival. Since 2010, a very special group of volunteers has helped during the main weekend of the festival – YWAMs, or Youth with a Mission, from Brisbane. The YWAM movement started in 1960 and operates in more than 1000 locations in 180-plus countries. These young people donate their time to volunteer with community groups across Australia while studying - and the Apple and Grape Harvest Festival is so pleased to host 55 YWAMs. They are the people who empty the rubbish bins, help move fences and are ready and willing for any job at a moment’s notice. All with big smiles on their faces! We encourage you to thank the YWAMs during the main weekend of the festival. They are easy to spot in their bright yellow volunteer shirts, or visit them at the Chai Tent near the police station and say ‘hello’ and ‘thank you’.
