NZATE NEWS: ISSUE ONE 2020 Kia ora koutou Welcome to the first edition of NZATE News for 2020. It has been an eventful year for NZATE, not only because of the impact of Covid-19 but also due to new initiatives in the provision of resources and professional development. The Good News Online Election A combination of resignations, a desire to increase the size of council, and the fact that two current council members have terms that are expiring, has led to the online election that is currently in progress. Normally, we’d hold elections as part of the AGM at conference but sadly, due to Covid-19, this wonderful event has had to be postponed this year. The profiles of the candidates for the various posts can be found on the NZATE Website - here. Do make sure you are enrolled to vote - HoDs need to create accounts for individual members of their department. Information on how to create these can be found here. Voting will be open from noon on Sunday June 7 and closes at 5pm on Sunday June 14. Results will be announced at 6pm on June 15. New Resources There has been much going on in terms of resource creation. Once again, we will be providing you with practice examination materials in 2020. But wait, there’s more. We have also been contracting community members to produce digital study guides. We have contracted a number of excellent practitioners from the community who have produced a diverse range of great study guide resources. These range from Video Game Literacies to Mansfield’s The Doll’s House and cover a fair bit of material betwixt the two - over 30 and counting so far. You can download these from the resources page of our website (for free, hurrah!)
Important Updates Here’s the latest from Nigel Mitchell who is leading the NCEA English Review. “The rapidly evolving situation with Covid-19 is causing the Ministry to revise our timelines for the Review of Achievement Standards. Assessment materials developed during the second phase of work in the pilot subjects, including English, are currently undergoing quality assurance and will be shared for sector feedback later in the year.” Professional Development NZATE continues to coordinate professional development for the community. During the Covid-19 lockdown, we were delighted to be able to run online workshops on effective distance learning and literary theories in practice. Moving forward, we are currently on the hunt for the best and the brightest in the community who would be willing to construct and deliver workshops on our behalf. If you are interested in this opportunity, contact Sian Evans (sian.evans@nzate.org.nz). We were also delighted to be able to offer a number of scholarships for teachers to “attend” the online conference run by the Australian Association of English Teachers. The lucky recipients were: • Beginning Teacher: Alyssa Kidd—Sacred Heart College, Lower Hutt • Regional Chair: Aneta Dezoete—North Auckland Regional Association • Pasifika: Elsie Leslie—Melville High School • Māori: Ngawai Hooker—Hamilton Girls’ High School • Remote or Sole Charge: Krista Maley—Whangamata Area School NZATE on Social Media There are now over 1200 subscribers to NZATE Facebook Page. We hope you enjoy the thought provoking (and sometimes mirth-provoking) content we share. The list of ‘The 50 Best Contemporary Novels Under 200 Pages’ was especially good, in my humble opinion. Of course, there is much cross pollination with our other communities - the Secondary English Mailing List and the NZ English Teachers’ Facebook Page. There was a very useful clarification about the use of technology for the writing standards on the former a week or so ago. You can join this community through the link here. English in Aotearoa Issue 99 of English in Aotearoa comes out in a moment of flux. Conceived before lockdown, developed during and issued to the world after, it reflects these changing times and gently considers our response to them. Our next issue will more fully develop this, and as such, we are keen to find teachers who would be interested to reflect on their time in a bubble, the rapid transition to online learning and back or the repercussions of our brave new world. Please contact Laura at editor@nzate.org.nz if you’d like to be involved.
