3 A message from Revd.Ben Sear April 2021 At this time of year our world is bursting with colour. We are fortunate that a previous occupant of our house loved gardening, so the garden is full of bulbs that spring up each year. There are tulips and daffodils and other flowers I don’t understand. Whilst some gardening is required, I am always amazed at how the bulbs shoot up each year without me needing to give much of a helping hand. They are a gift to us each year, a gift of new life that tells us that spring is here and warmer days are ahead. I recently heard it said that every flowering bulb speaks to us of the resurrection of Jesus; of the possibility of new life that is found in him. The image of the bulb is a perfect one for Easter, because in order for a bulb to produce flowering life, it must first be buried in the ground. New life starts with a burial. Jesus himself used that illustration when his time had come to go to the cross. He said: “…unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.” (John 12:24) At Easter we remember the death of Jesus on the cross and his burial in the tomb. However, we also remember his resurrection, his new life, that followed on from that burial. When Jesus came back to life on Easter Sunday it was a powerful declaration that Jesus has been victorious. He had paid the price for us not loving God or each other as we were created to, so that we can enjoy God’s forgiveness and fellowship. His resurrection was also the proof that by following him, we can be assured of eternal life, even in the wake of death. Jesus, like a seed, first needed to be buried, but this burial led to an abundance of new life. Perhaps over this past year you have been more aware than ever of the reality of life, death and the fragility of things we might be tempted to put our confidence in. Jesus is good news because he is the one who give us a secure offer of life, even when other things and people let us down. If you would like to hear more about Jesus, the man who conquered death, why not join us on Easter Sunday this year. Alternatively, we are running an online course after Easter called Christianity Explored over 7 weeks, which provides an opportunity to find out more about Jesus and the hope and life he brings. There is an advert for this in the magazine and feel free to get in touch if you would like to find out more. God bless Ben
4 Local Update. March 2021 Tackling the Climate Emergency in Wealden It is timely to update everyone on local progress with the Climate Change agenda.Whilst a lot of Council focus has been on the impacts of Covid , business as usual has continued. Wealden District Council declared a Climate Emergency in July 2019 and we published our first Climate Emergency Plan in December 2019, setting out our net -zero ambitions for the Council and the District. However, we can’t begin to set ourselves meaningful targets or measure progress until we better understand where we are starting. We therefore began by analysing our own greenhouse gas emissions, as well as that of the wider District, and creating baselines for both. We also modelled the potential impact on future emissions of a range of policy and technological developments. Ultimately, this has enabled us to identify the key intervention measures and steps needed to achieve the decarbonisation target. It is perhaps easiest to start where we have the most control – our own assets. Almost all of our corporate and retirement living buildings are now powered by renewable energy sources. Solar PV panels are installed at 10 of our retirement living schemes and the Council offices, while air source heat pumps have been installed in our general needs properties. Our main office building has been completely redeveloped to incorporate (amongst other things) passive ventilation, solar shading, solar PV and air source heating, achieving a BREEAM rating of ‘excellent’. We also have some 3000 Council homes, for which we are developing carbon reduction plans . We are exploring alternative heating options for our off-gas homes, and hydrogen ready and hybrid systems for others. We know that there will not be one single solution for gas replacement, so we are investigating a range of alternatives. We only have a small vehicle fleet, which we have started to replace with electric vehicles, and we are working with our waste contractor to plan how to decarbonise our waste collection service. Planning permission is perhaps the biggest impact that we can have on emissions, through our ability to influence and facilitate change locally and nationally. We know that emissions across our District have reduced by over 32% since 2005, but we know this is not enough. As an area, our main challenges are emissions from transport (which equate to 47% of all emissions) and domestic gas and electricity consumption. One of our current priorities is to install electric vehicle charge points into our car parks throughout the District, to increase the availability of public infrastructure and stimulate the switch to electric vehicles. 6 (continued from page 4) Planning permission was recently given for a multi EV charging point and solar farm near Copwood Roundabout,Uckfield. This has understandably caused a lot of concern locally but it will give us a head start with EV Charging infrastructure. Through the planning process, we have so far also granted permissions for one wind farm and nine solar farms, and we have recently delivered a solar PV and battery storage group-buying scheme for residents and businesses. Collectively, we are already producing enough renewable electricity in the District to power around 40% of all our housing. We are planning the wholesale regeneration of our largest market Town and a whole range of low carbon and ecological features are being incorporated, including low carbon building design, the co-location of technology (such as solar PV, battery storage and EV charge points), and a district heat network. However, we know we cannot achieve our net-zero ambitions alone; we all need to get involved. Therefore, we are engaging with our local communities, to share information and exchange ideas, including recently through a virtual Climate Day for Town and Parish councils. Our residents are active and engaged. We have a 51% recycling rate in the District and we are committed to increasing this further through campaigns and education. Of the 49% that is not recycled, 48% goes to a local incinerator, the energy from which is fed into the National Grid. Some of the initiatives we are supporting include: The Solar Together project to enable the uptake of Solar PV and battery storage by property owners (more than 1000 have registered so far). A project to accelerate the uptake of renewable technology in an industrial estate. The Riding Sunbeams project, which will allow a community-owned solar farm to generate power for railway lines. Awareness campaigns to encourage take up of the Green Homes Grant scheme. A community project to help residents understand the benefits of switching from oil fired to renewable heating systems The Great British Spring Clean campaign, which has extensive community involvement, with over 40 groups regularly taking part and many carrying on litter picking throughout the year. 12 Newsletter from Maresfield Parish Council – March 2021 How Many New Homes for Maresfield Parish ? Wealden District Council hopes to publish its new draft Local Plan in Spring 2022 and it will almost certainly include a number for the new homes to be built in Maresfield Parish over the plan period. We do not know what that number is; in the last Plan (2013) it was fifty. But circumstances are now very different. Firstly, Wealden District will be required to plan for at least 1,200 homes per year whereas in 2013 the number was about 450. Secondly, the protection against development afforded by our Parish’s proximity to the Ashdown Forest has significantly reduced. We still understand that no new development will be allowed within the Forest nor within the 400m Exclusion Zone around the Forest Boundary; however, development elsewhere will not be restricted but will merely require a small financial contribution as mitigation for any adverse effect on the Forest attributable to the development. Thirdly, Wealden’s recent requests to landowners/developers to put forward sites for an initial assessment of their suitability for development has yielded over 30 sites in our Parish which if deemed suitable would encourage Wealden in their new Plan to allocate a number of new homes to our Parish which could be delivered from those sites. My personal conclusion is that our Parish could be allocated as many as 250 new homes, or even more and these could be built on sites in Nutley as well as in Maresfield. If we think 250 is too many we need to have very good reasons and feed these into Wealden as soon as we can while their draft plan is being prepared. Your views please. Where the houses would go in the Parish is an essential part of the valuable work currently being undertaken by our NDP Steering Group who are objectively and impartially assessing the sites which have been put forward and will produce a prioritised list of their recommended sites when the number of homes to be allocated is known. I wrote a piece about the local planning background for the November parish magazines and this is still available on the Parish Council website. I’m sure you would find it inter- esting. Parish Survey Please look out for the General Survey we are going to ask every household in the Parish to complete. This is to update our evidence base for our latest draft of our Neighbour- hood Development Plan and also to inform our ongoing discussions with Wealden District Council as they consult the Parishes during the preparation of their new Local Plan. As I indicated above this will affect our Parish and especially Maresfield Village so your input is important and the Parish Council needs to understand the views of parish- ioners so we can fully represent them to Wealden and reflect them in our NDP. 19 NUTLEY FETE IS ON! It is with great pleasure, and a measure of trepidation, that the Nutley Village Fete Committee has decided to go ahead this year with the wonderful Nutley tradition. So in anticipation of being able to look forward to some normality by then, the Nutley Village Fete will return on: Saturday 26th June, 2021 from 1pm – 5pm. We hope to enjoy the regular line up of festivities, entertainment, displays and stalls that we have come to expect of our wonderful village day, raising much needed funds for local good causes; even more important this year than ever. Please consider taking a stall or encouraging friends, near and far, to take a stall. Details and booking forms are available from Lisa on 01342 824038 or email nutleyvillagedaybookings@gmail.com. We are so excited so please, please help support us and make it a day to remember! Nutley Village Fete - Help us find a home for the Fete’s kit! The Nutley Village Fete Committee are asking Nutley residents if anyone is willing to store the kit needed to setup the Fete. We’re hoping a kind person could donate a covered, lockable space on a mid/long term basis to store: fence posts bunting crockery smash stall coconut shy stall We think this would need about 3m x 6m of space. The Committee would need access in the run up to the Fete in June. Please let us know at the email nutleyvillagedayfete@gmail.com Thank you! Matt & Nutley Village Fete Committee.
20 Climate Change Interest Group – Sponsored by Maresfield Parish Council Local Climate Change Challenge The Climate Change Interest Group is made up of local people and our aim is to challenge Maresfield Parish residents to make changes in a variety of areas for the good of the environment. We hope you feel inspired to join in with some of our suggestions and would welcome your feedback. April 2021 – The importance of using Peat Free Compost The days are getting brighter and we are thinking about sewing seeds and potting up cuttings and seedlings. Have you considered buying peat-free compost this year? Why are peat bogs vital for us? When you dig up peat that’s two meters (7ft) below the surface, it is about 8,000 years old. Plants in this peat clump lived and died before the Egyptians constructed the pyramids and before humans invented the wheel. This is history and carbon gold. Peatlands are the UK’s largest on land store of carbon, holding three times as much as all of our woodlands. Peatlands are the superheroes of ecosystems: they purify water, sometimes mitigating flooding and providing a home for rare species. Known peatlands only cover about 3% of the world’s land surface, but store at least twice as much carbon as all of Earth’s standing forests. In addition, at least one-third of the world’s organic soil carbon, which plays a vital role in mitigating climate change and stabilizing the carbon cycle, is in peatlands so peat bogs are the one of most essential ecosystem. Why should you buy peat-free compost for your garden? For general potting a peat-free compost has the benefit of holding moisture well and releasing nutrients slowly and over a long period of time, which is ideal for planters and containers. Did you know that multi-purpose compost, unless it is labelled 'peat-free', can contain between 70% and 100% peat? There are clear environmental reasons why we should be concerned about using even small amounts of peat. British peat bogs store the carbon equivalent to about 20 years' worth of national industrial emissions. Peat-free compost on the other hand is a totally natural and eco-friendly product with a wide range of uses. It can contain ingredients such as recycled garden materials, bark fines and wood fibre to a strict quality specification, helping us make the most of the waste we throw away and contributing to a reduction in carbon emissions. If you are looking for an effective soil improver, it is much better to use a peat- free product. Any bulky organic material can be used to improve the organic content of soil, but peat is low in nutrients and too fine, so peat-free alternatives are a much better option.
21 Peat-free compost is ideal for potting up established seedlings and general repotting but is not always ideal for sowing seeds. When using peat-free compost for seed sowing try to sieve it and mix it with vermiculite to give it a nice open structure which works well for seeds. Of course, composting your kitchen waste, such as fruit and vegetable peelings and tea bags, along with your garden waste such as lawn clippings and prunings is a really easy way to make your own compost to help your garden bloom. Home- made compost is the perfect nutrient-rich food for your garden and will help improve soil structure, maintain moisture levels and keep your soil's pH balance in check. It has everything your plants need, including nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium and it will help improve soils that are very acidic or alkaline. So why not give peat free compost a chance this year? Or in other words, bog off the peat. Our group meets, currently via zoom, once per month and you are welcome to join our meetings, please contact Nancy for details or with any feedback or suggestions you may have. Email: assistantclerk@maresfieldparish.org.uk Nutley Ladies Friendship Circle We are hoping that Nutley Ladies Friendship Circle can start to meet again this summer. In line with the rules published on the 22nd February, it would be possible for us to meet outside on Thursday 10th June and the idea is to meet on Fords Green from 2pm till 4pm and have a picnic. Could members contact Jackie Norman on 712056 if they would like to attend. We will have to delay if the weather is bad and of course we will cancel if the rules change. Sunrise Café We are still unable to open due to current Covid 19 restrictions, but keep a look out on Facebook/Nutley Village Events Group or the Nutley Mums Group for announcements, and we’ll keep you updated if we are able to open in the near future – realistically it’s likely to be end of May or June before we can meet. Even if we still can’t meet indoors by then, the weather will be much nicer and we should be able to meet outside and have a little picnic on the Village Green! We can’t wait to catch up again with all of our customers and visitors over a cup of coffee and some cake! Pre pandemic, Sunrise Café is open every Friday morning during term time, 9am-10am in Nutley Church Hall. Everyone is welcome; we offer free tea, coffee, soft drinks and lots of homemade goodies! Hopefully it won’t be too long before we see you all again. Valerie & Wendy

25 Nutley Bowling Club Like so many other local groups, has been out of action for twelve months,. The various Government rules prevented the club from func- tioning last summer even though it is an outdoor activity . Despite those restrictions a few club members maintained the lush playing surface all summer so that once the restrictions are lifted the playing surface would still be perfect. Maintaining the club was expensive but essential with very little income . Fortunately we were well supported by every member who happily paid their annual membership fee for no practical return. As I write this , it seems that the club will be able operate again this summer and members are just waiting for the green light. We would also like to take this opportunity to invite new members to come along and have a go. We are a very friendly crowd. As normal we will be having a couple of "Taster Days" early in the new season. Subject to any changes made by the Government we hope these will take place on Sunday 25 April from 2pm and on Sunday 24 May any time from 10am to about 4pm. If you would like to try your hand , just give a call to either Mike Evans (01825 713588) or Peter Lambert (01825 713691) for further information or better still, JUST TURN UP. Ashdown Evergreens Due to the fact that February's edition of the Parish Magazine did not get distributed; I am reprinting it and both Roger and myself would like to wish all our members a safe and healthy New Year. Due to this unprecedented situation that we have found ourselves in it was necessary for the Club to postpone all activities for the 2020 year. We had hoped that the programme arranged for 2020 would take place in 2021 with the relevant speakers etc confirming they were willing to reschedule. The Government have now given us a roadmap of how and when various activities, etc can take place but due to the complexities of the situation we feel it is not prudent to open the Club for the foreseeable future but be assured that as soon as we are given the “all clear” you will be advised, so please keep a check on any update which will be posted in this magazine. In the meantime, keep safe and best wishes. Liz and Roger Lloyd
26 Nutley Tennis & Squash Club (NTSC) NTSC are looking forward to the lockdown restrictions easing in line with the Government roadmap announced back in February. We are still waiting for full details from England Squash and the Lawn Tennis Association, but at the time of writing, it is hoped that NTSC’s roadmap will be:- Squash April 12th - Solo practice and household bubbles only May 17th - Larger squash bubbles and smaller coaching groups June 21st - All normal squash activities resume Tennis March 29th - Outdoor recreational tennis including singles and doubles social play March 29th - 1:1 coaching April 24th - Saturday Junior Tennis coaching resumes NTSC’s virtual AGM was held on 15th March and thanks to everyone who ‘zoomed’ in. Members unanimously agreed to spend some funds on updating the clubhouse, in particular the men’s changing rooms and the lower lobby area, which needs some additional heating to make it much more comfortable in the colder weather. It was also agreed to rebind the surface of the Tennis Courts, and this will take place over the Easter Holidays. Ideally this work would have been completed before the tennis courts opened up again, but unfortunately the temperature needs to be a bit warmer for the new surface to seal properly, so Easter was the earliest this work could be undertaken. We are really hoping to hold some Open Days later in the year when full re- strictions are lifted, so keep watching our website and Face Book page for more details. If you would like more details about our Club, please do get in touch with our Chair Allan Curtis on 07718 320184 or Treasurer Chris Williams on 07788 713707, or have a look at our website http://nutleytennisandsquash.co.uk. If you would like to book a lesson for yourself or your children, please contact Steve or Finn for Squash on 07425 167712 or George on 07947 796196 for Tennis. (covid restrictions permitting). 29 Nutley Preschool Well I can’t quite believe as I write this that we are in April and Easter is here! Another successful spring term completed at Lit- tle Deers. What a busy term it has been since Christmas and we have been extremely lucky to have remained open with everything going on at the moment. What a godsend it has been to have some normality for the little ones during these extremely key development years for them. Chinese New Year, the arrival of spring, and Mother’s Day have been the centre of some of our topics and learning this term. I am sure Easter Holiday Club will bring yet more fun with Easter themed activities! We are pleased to be welcoming back Music Bus and Tiny Tekkers into our preschool timetable after Easter, the children have missed them so much. I’d like to take this opportunity to extend thanks our extremely competent staff team and dedicated committee for all that they do for us, continuing to make Nutley Preschool a place to be proud of. Don’t forget to check out our Facebook page for all our recent activities and give us a ‘like’! We managed to celebrate World Book Day and followed the Usborne Books ‘Ready, Steady, Listen’ sponsorship scheme to raise £400 towards new books for preschool – what a result! Other main event fundraising has naturally taken a do wnturn during restricted times, yet we have recently held a Mother’s Day Hamper raffle and also an Easter raffle. Please save the date of Saturday 26th June 2021 in your diaries just in case the Nutley Village Fete is allowed to proceed. If you shop on Amazon, please do consider adding us as your chosen charity (number: 1028830) on the Amazon Smile scheme! This is now available for use with the Amazon ‘app’ or you can still visit http://smile.amazon.co.uk. Continue shopping as normal and Amazon will donate 0.5% on every eligible purchase to our preschool. It's worth a try, even though it's small amounts, it may add up to a lot if we all use it and share with friends and family too! Places are still available at preschool so do get in touch if you are interested. You can contact Pippa by email at chair@nutleypreshool.org.uk or call our preschool mobile number and speak to Jess our manager on 07535 655013. We wish you all a wonderful Easter break and we hope to continue making strides as a preschool and a community back to normality and the better weather certainly helps. Philippa O’Donovan (Vice Chair) Easter greetings to you all. Easter symbolises new life and new beginnings and, with that in mind, Nutley CE Primary School are very pleased to welcome several new pupils and families in recent weeks. We are so happy to have you as part of our community. Forest School has been going ahead last month and this month, with Fox and Hedgehog Class enjoying the Ashdown Forest on our doorstep. 32 As we finally start moving towards an easing of Lockdown restrictions we hope that all in the village and surrounding area are still keeping well. Though restrictions are beginning to ease, the use of the War Memorial Hall is likely to still be affected by Covid rules for a little while longer. If all goes to plan with the vaccination programme and the easing of Lockdown, we would expect to see the Hall allowed to be used for functions again by June. We are very much looking forward to the day when clubs and societies within the village can start to meet and socialise again in a less restricted and more normal way. The CIO updates this month are :- Election of New Trustees - There have been a number of candidates put themselves forward for election as Trustees for the CIO. The next step is to organise an Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) where regis- tered members of the CIO get the option to elect these candidates as Trustees. By the time of reading this article the planned format of the meeting and voting process should have been forwarded to registered members. We hope to conduct this meeting for the election of new Trustees in April if it proves possible to hold it virtually. Strategic Project - As a per the previous updates, as a result of the consultation feedback and in view of the Covid restrictions, the Trustees decided in January to delay the consultation process and the subsequent vote on the options contained in the Nissen Richards study, until further notice. Once the new Trustees are on board a review of the Project, and comments re- ceived, can be taken along with decisions on the best way to proceed. The Trustees wish to thank all members of the community for comments that have already been submitted to them since the Nissen Richards Study was published. Comments on the Study can continue to be sent to chairman@nutley-war- memorial-hall.co.uk or by post to Chair of NWMCIO, Nutley War Memorial Hall, High Street, Nutley, TN22 3NE. Please note that the Trustees are not in a position to respond to every e-mail, but will ensure that comments received are considered by all the Trustees. Registering as a CIO Member - If you still haven’t registered to become a member of the CIO, you live in the village boundary and are over 18 years of age, then please do so – this will enable you to ‘have your say’ on any decisions which im- pact the village. To register please log onto our website, www.nutley-war- memorial-hall.co.uk and follow the link ‘Become a member of the CIO’. This is simply to register that you live within the boundary and of course will give you other benefits such as cheaper rates when hiring the Memorial Hall, and the ability to attend Annual General Meetings. If you do not have an email address, please contact us at the hall at on 01825 712465 and we will help you to register. Regards Ray Tester, Kevin Smith, David Watson, Simon Coleman, and Chris Williams

36 April Prayer Article 20 million adults in the U.K. pray. One in three people believes God will answer their prayers and we believe this too. We are living in difficult times with worries about COVID, finances, relationships, mental health, bereavement and loneliness. We are not meant to cope alone. God is closer than you think and waiting to hear from you and to meet you when you reach out to him. Prayer is simply conversation with God. You don’t need to use special words or a special voice you can pray out loud or silently. You can pray anytime, anywhere about anything. People often struggle to find God, but the truth is he is all around. God is interested in us and in some way, we are made like him – in his image. It makes knowing him a genuine option. We live in a rich country and have the opportunity to fill our lives with so many things, but we are often not happy. Are we missing something? There’s got to be something better. Is there another way of living life? Jesus invites us to change our lives because God’s kingdom is here. He wants us to live life to the full and in the bible, he tells us and shows us how. Jesus loves us and promises us peace. Why not talk to him about this? The last year or so has been a really difficult time and we would be really glad to pray for you and have just created a new page on our website where you can make prayer requests and let us know how you are. You are welcome to leave your name and contact details or submit something anonymously. This page can be found at www.maresfieldandnutleychurches.com/prayer.html EASTER SERVICES: Good Friday (2nd April ) An hour at the Cross—2pm Easter Day service (4th April)—9.15am Sunday morning services at 9.15am Online Sunday worship available from 10.30am on the Live Stream page www.maresfieldandnutleychurches.com St.James the Less is open for individual private prayer every Wednesday and Saturday from 9am—4pm
