www.dalgetybayandhillend.org NEWSLETTER MAY 2021 RESIDENTS DIVIDED OVER PROPOSED COFFEE OUTLET Residents of Dalgety Bay are divided over plans to bring a coffee retailer to the area, with traffic and litter being the major concerns. A formal planning application has been submitted by Cuppacoff Ltd, of London, for a Costa Coffee on the ground floor and a new “up and over” gym for the rest of the building. But comments on social media show that not everybody is in favour of the outlet coming to the Bay. Some observers feel the new addition would be overkill, with Greggs and Subway selling coffee. Others are concerned about the extra traffic such an establishment would generate. Dalgety Bay and Hillend Community Council is aware of the possible problems surrounding the introduction of another popular retailer in the area. “The Community Council are looking to work with all stakeholders regarding traffic issue at the east end of the industrial estate which include the owners of the Gateway, Asda and B&M and other industrial business also,” it says. Another concern is the possibility of increased levels of litter. Some residents appear to approve of the addition of the coffee shop to the area. Reasons for the positivity include the creation of jobs and greater choice. Planning permission for the drive-thru was granted in July 2019 but now the applicants are looking to add to the development, which would include 52 parking spaces and outdoor seating. The drive-thru will sit beside the £4 million Gateway’s flagship Aldi supermarket, which opened in June 2019. 1

Nurdles are tiny plastic pellets used as the feedstock for manufacturing plastic items. Plastic-Free Over 300 billion are manufactured every week at INEOS’s Grangemouth plant. They are made using ethane, which is broken down into ethylene to make plastics. You may not know that the ethane is imported from the US, where it has been extracted by fracking. This is cheaper than using the dwindling supply of ethane in the North Sea. The fracked gas is extracted in Pennsylvania, then transported in a 300-mile pipeline to the coast. From there, it is shipped to Scotland on huge tankers that you may have seen in the Forth. The pipeline has caused many sinkholes, and there are grave concerns Dalgety Bay about leaks, which led to its temporary closure in 2018. The Scottish Government has rightly imposed a moratorium on fracking in Scotland. So how can it justify allowing fracked gas to be imported from the US to Grangemouth at huge environmental cost, to make an environmentally harmful product that we are supposedly trying to reduce? The Forth is awash with nurdles. 450,000 were counted at North Queensferry in 2018, and Dalgety Bay is no different. Because they are so small, they escape notice, but they are all over our beaches and the adjacent farmland. Billions must be in the river itself. Moreover, they are almost impossible to clean up on our rocky shoreline. Nurdles soak up toxins, attract bacteria, and harm wildlife when ingested. They enter the Forth because of INEOS’s carelessness when loading them for transport. INEOS has promised “zero pellet loss”, but this is clearly just empty PR, as easily-identifiable brand new nurdles wash up all the time. PFDB is adding its voice to the campaign to tackle this blight on our local environment. Facebook: Plastic-Free Dalgety Bay Dalgety Bay Art Club This year brings with it the Art Club’s 40th birthday. The Club was formed by a group of artists in 1981. The premises we now occupy was originally the Barratt sales office when housing was being developed in the Bay. After fears of it being demolished, a petition was raised and ownership of the building was officially handed over to us by Barratt in 1982. Over the years we have made many improvements to the building, including our most recent extension to house our ever-growing selection of equipment. What started out as an unwanted, run down wooden hut has now become a comfortable and thriving hub for all things creative. In 1985 we held our first full day exhibition in the Church Hall and we have had two exhibitions every year since. I make that about 70 exhibitions, and it’s lovely to think that so many of our creations over the years are probably scattered around many homes in Dalgety Bay and surrounding areas. Slavery and Empire are much in the news these days but most of the articles and comments are on the slave trade that flourished in the 18th and 19th centuries. As though slavery was a ‘thing of the past’ and only of interest to the Woke generation. Unfortunately, slavery, in different forms, is still very much with us. Michail is a father of three and a farmer in Bangladesh, a country badly hit by the coronavirus. “We could not work during the lockdown. Most of the days we have been having only rice with salt or rice with one vegetable or only some small snails that we gather from outdoors.” Michail is a subsistence farmer and to survive the pandemic he had to take out a loan of 25,000 taka (about £225) from moneylenders to pay for his 18-month-old son’s medical treatment. A loan of 1,000 taka can take three years’ of unpaid work to repay. “Often when I return from work”, continued Michail, “I see a moneylender sitting in my home. Several times I had to repay the loan without buying my son’s medicine. This fills me with shame and grief but I have no alternative in order to care for my sick child. So I have to borrow money from another moneylender and then another… We have a complete dependence on debt.” Michail’s story is not unique and many people are bound in slavery to the moneylenders. Fairtrade schemes can help – where farmers like Michail can receive a fair price for their product, enough to keep them out of the clutches of the moneylenders. Every time you buy a Fairtrade product you are helping farmers to make a living to support themselves and their families; you are helping to reduce the impact of modern- day slavery and reduce the grip moneylenders have on communities. Every Fairtrade purchase makes a difference to some family and some community. As lockdown eases and the BBQs come out, it is time to enjoy Fairtrade chocolate inside Fairtrade bananas; rice on the BBQ is slightly trickier but it can all be enjoyed with a glass of Fairtrade wine. You help someone every time you buy Fairtrade. If you would like to become a Fairtrade supporter or would like more information about Fairtrade, please contact Winnie Wood, Chair (822516) or Robin Arnott, Secretary (822293). Have a look at our web site (www.fairtrade-dalgetybay.org.uk); check out Faretrade Poster Winner 2018 our local Fairtrade Directory and read about Fairtrade ‘Beyond 2015 and towards 2030’. Lily Simon, Natasha Norman Dalgety Bay Jackie Mitchell As many of you know, our mum, Jackie, passed away on 24 March. She had made Dalgety Bay her home for 41 years, with her family and played a big role in the community, through tap dancing, keep fit and line dancing. She was the choreographer for many pantomimes with her junior dancers taking a large part. She was well known for helping and fundraising for local groups as well as anything to help children. Gordon Cottage in Kelty and Rachel House children’s Hospice were two to benefit. She was awarded The Timms Trophy for her work within our community, something that meant a great deal to her. She lived life to the full, always being on the go, keeping busy and had lots of friends in Dalgety Bay - young and old - who will remember her in many ways. Her last few weeks were in Roselea House, Cowdenbeath where her care was exemplary. To show our gratitude, we have a Just Giving page in her name to raise funds for Roselea House as they are saving up for a summer house for the residents. We are also raising money for Fife Carers Centre, to help any person who deserves a little break from caring to enjoy afternoon tea etc. If you would like to donate to help these worthy causes, it will be very much appreciated. Thank You from Jill, Mandy, Jackie’s daughters and their families. 14

In May we were supposed to be going on a visit to Cairn o’Mhor Winery near Inchture on the A90 between Perth and Dundee. They make fruit wines and cider and this was to be our “fruit” talk. We have not had a fruit talk for a number of years, so this was it. Sadly, it is not to be and we have cancelled it. Maybe next year. I sincerely hope so. The DBHS Annual Plant Sale has been cancelled also. Some said we could have it outside but we are slaves to the weather, and we’ve had some really wet days at the Plant Sale. Leftovers from the Plant Sale usually go to the DBHS stall at the Gala but there is no Gala this year, so no DBHS plant stall. DBHS Daffodils - Dalmeny View The April meeting, on Friday 2 April, was cancelled. It was the second time Tom Campbell had been asked to give his presentation on Brighter Bervie. Tom headed a floral team in Inverbervie on the east coast between Montrose and Stonehaven. They did some wonderful displays around the town. The Scottish Gardeners’ Forum (SGF) held their AGM there one year and we were shown around. It was beautiful. The DBHS Committee is working on a reduced schedule for the DBHS Annual Show by photograph and we will endeavour to publish a show schedule and circulate it with the next Grapevine. There will be fewer classes than usual in the published sections. There will not be as many Vegetable classes. All the Cut Flower Sections will be amalgamated to make one Cut Flowers section and all the Pot Plants sections will be amalgamated to make one Pot Plants DBHS Daffodils - Longhill Gardens section. There will be a much reduced Industrious section as well. Exhibitors will send their exhibits in by photograph. There will be the usual prize money, but no trophies will be awarded. Hopefully, many of you will enter. We are looking forward to this challenge but we will miss the usual buzz of the Annual Show. The “Jobs for” part of the DBHS report is on the DBHS website at www.dbhs.org. Click on the “Jobs for” button to see what jobs you should be doing at this time of year.
