2 THE WISCONSIN ODD FELLOW APRIL 2021 TO BE READ IN ALL ODD FELLOW LODGES: GRAND MASTER’S LETTER Dear Brothers and Sisters, I am starting my letter this month a little different. We are plan- ning on having Grand Lodge session this year June 13-16, 2021! I am very excited to have this. It will be one move back to normal. We will have to make some changes with it. Everyone will be wear- ing a mask at Grand Lodge. We will be spread out around the room. We will not be moving chairs and bunching up. This includes at our meals. There are other changes also. If you have questions about the changes or what you think might be a needed change let Grand Lodge or myself know. I will take all your ideas into account to try and make everyone feel at ease at sessions the best I can. I for one am looking forward to this session and seeing everyone at Grand Lodge. I am hoping everyone will come to Grand Lodge and with the changes we are making will feel at ease attending sessions. Grand lodge is not just the Grand Master, elected officers, appointed officers and members of committees. This is for allrdlodges to be there, voice your opinions and by voting on all items that are brought up. Grand Lodge is open to all 3 degree members. I cannot stand-up front and have an empty room and call this a session. We need to have people there from the lodges. I would like to see someone from every lodge in our jurisdiction at session. Please do not feel that you need to know a lot of others there or what takes place. If this is your first session, we will all help you out. I would love to see new faces at Grand Lodge sessions. You all have input on how our Fishing changes going forward by voting one way or the other on items at Grand Lodge. Granted most of the items might make little changes, others could make big changes. Depending on what the items are that come up for vote. As always please let me know of anything your lodge is doing and I will try my best to be there and help. If it is degree work, or other lodge events. Until next month when I have more Fishing stories. (920) 435-4810 NEWS FROM THE ACTIVITY DEPARTMENT There is a lot to share with you this month. After a long year of following precautions, COVID-19 protocols, and isolation, we have started taking steps forward. It is always exciting when we can do more things, even if it is mostly from within the facility. We have opened our B and C wings and residents from these two wings are now able to interact with each other. Of course masks need to be worn and we need to continue to social distance. From an activity perspective we are so excited that residents from the two wings are able to attend activities together or just spend time with each other. We now do our daily scheduled activities once a day with both wings present. All of our social activities that involve food or drink con- tinue to be done on the wings by cart service. The two wings continue to alternate meals in the dining room. Resident/Family visits started back up. It has been very exciting to see. Family members are now able to come into the facility to see their loved ones in person. Unfortunately, these are scheduled visits and are done a couple days each week. We are hoping to expand on this in the future. We continue to do some live music each month in the facility as well. The entertainers need to come in 15 minutes before they play so we can take temps and they are given an Antigen Test- this is the COVID-19 quick test. Once the test comes back negative they are able to set up and play their music. The musicians are wearing face shields while they perform. We keep the musicians and the residents separate. Now that we can have the two wings together we started to have our Resident Council meetings again. We added a monthly progressive bingo. Residents have the choice to play and those who choose to play receive a bingo card at the beginning of the month. A number is called daily. The pot grows by a nickel each day. The first bingo wins the pot! We are doing a jelly bean guess this week as a fun Easter activity. We do one for residents and one for staff. We will announce the winners and award the prizes on Friday. Thursday is the opening day of the MLB so we will be having a Brewer Day for residents and staff. There will be a hot dog lunch for staff to purchase, and of course we will be watch- ing the game in the activity room with other baseball/Brewer fun. Happy Easter! Cindy Czechanski, Activity Director ATTENTION If you would like to receive your Wisconsin Odd Fellow by e-mail, please send your e-mail address to the Grand Secretary at grandsecretary@ioofwi.org We are trying to save some cost by e-mailing as many papers as we can.
6 THE WISCONSIN ODD FELLOW APRIL 2021 NEWS FROM THE CEO I want to start this month’s newsletter with a quote from Richard Branson – “If someone offers you an amazing opportunity and you are not sure you can do it, say yes. Then learn how to do it later”! All during the last year we have been so cautious and it has been rewarded with our success keeping our staff and residents safe. It is time to say yes to putting the horror behind us. The word yes is magical! It opens doors, it inspires greatness, it lends confidence, and it just plain feels good! So many people are afraid to live and sadly, afraid to laugh. Let me share with you Susie Moore’s 9 truths about the power of yes. If we do not say YES, we block the miracle. We lose out on the learning yes brings and the fun of new experiences. There are a million reasons to say no – look for the reason to say yes. Pay attention to the cheerleader in your soul Someone believes in you. Let us pull in the confidence others have in our ability to conquer this obstacle. Yes opens doors. 30 years ago, my husband asked me to move to Wisconsin. I had a great job, loads of friends, and a life I loved but I said “yes”. I now have a better job, better friends, and a life I treasure all because I said “yes”. Sometimes opportunities only come around once. Seize the moment, luck favors the bold! Yes makes life richer, fuller and more fun Saying yes is like saying “hey world, I got this” Stretch your creativity by taking a risk – say yes Life is short, instead of asking why, ask why not! When faced with a difficult decision, I often ask myself, “what is the worst that can happen and what is the best that can hap- pen”? I chose the best – say yes! For some reason, I feel like we have beaten COVID 19! We have been obedient, we have stretched ourselves to the end of our ropes, we have trusted each other without question, and we have won! It is time to give thanks to God and leave the darkness behind us! With love from the Captain of the Cheerleaders Char MISTY’S Recipe Exchange LET’S SHARE RECIPES! Yours in F, L, T, Jeffery Jones Grand Master Grand Lodge of WI TO BE READ IN ALL LODGES: BY-LAW AMENDMENT TO HOME ASSOCIATION A change to the following article was approved by the Board of Directors at their January 2020 meeting. The members of the Board of Directors shall be elected at the same time as the officers of The Grand Lodge. Odd Fellow and Rebekah members shall be elected for a three-year term, with the term of any one Director from each unit of the Order to expire each year. This provides for continuity of the Board. 10 THE WISCONSIN ODD FELLOW APRIL 2021 Office of the Sovereign Grand Master Independent Order of Odd Fellows Greetings Brothers and Sisters: As I begin to write this message, we here in Alberta have experienced all the cold weather conditions this February can bring – from 4 inches of snow in a little over an hour, to some very cold weather. In talking to my Brother-in-law last week, it was minus 50 degrees Celsius one morning when he went out to check on the cows. I know many of you have also endured severe weather conditions as well. It reminds us of the tale of the “Sun and North Wind” who engaged in a competition to see who could make a passing traveler remove his coat. I do hope that everyone has survived the challenges that this weather has presented to us! Take time to reflect on our days, name the ways to respond and react to the various situations that surround us. Increase your self-awareness, transform us into the people that we are called upon to be. Take time to call, write a note, e-mail, or text your family, friends, and Lodge members. It will brighten the days ahead for them. Be the kind of person that people want to be around, save your stamina and strength to face the challenges of our every day lives. We need to be thankful for those that keep us safe – the men and women in the military, our local police, ambulance, fire services and hospital staff. Thankful for the essential workers, such as store clerks, truck drivers and all those involved in keeping our food chain running. 2020-21 has brought to our attention how truly dedicated these front-line workers are. If you are in contact with these amazing workers, please re- member to say, “Thank you for your service to our community and country”. This has been a challenging year for the World, Canadians, and Americans and of course the Odd Fellows and Rebekahs. However, after many months of isolation and fear, the news of the vaccine brings us HOPE for the future. Remember we here in North America are so fortunate for our Health Care Systems, compared to many countries who do not have the Heath benefits that we do. Also remember, just because the vaccine is here, it is going to take time to make this a better place in which to live. “Step Up to The Plate, The Future is in your Hands”. Please stay safe. Fraternally, s/ E Wesley Nelson Easter is the gift of HOPE Sovereign Grand Master Easter is the gift of PEACE Easter is the Gift of LOVE May this Easter bring you all a great celebration filled with lots of JOY, HAPPINESS and of THE FUTURE IS IN YOUR HANDS, course STEP UP TO THE PLATE” “CHOCOLATE” “we seek to improve and elevate the character of mankind”
APRIL 2021 THE WISCONSIN ODD FELLOW 11 Office of the President International Association of Rebekah Assemblies I.O.O.F. Dear, dear Sisters and Brothers, According to information received in recent weeks, some jurisdictions are planning to hold their sessions as originally scheduled. If that indicates reduc- tion in the threat of the pandemic and increasing focus on individual safety measures, that’s good news in- deed! As jurisdictions – and ultimately the SGL, IARA, GMC, and IALAPM – hold their sessions, elections of officers will demand and merit attention. My question to you is this: Will each person elected be an officer or will each person elected be a leader? What’s the difference? An officer is one who has a position of authority in an organization; i.e.: Noble Grand or Assembly Warden. A leader, however, is one who motivates a group of people to act toward achieving a common goal. Can an officer be a leader? Absolutely! Can a leader be an officer? Absolutely! Will an officer always be a leader? Unfortunately, no. A leader is one whom people follow voluntarily. That person may have no title or position of authority; neither is needed to build a following. An officer is one selected to fulfill specific duties. Our rituals specify those duties. Sometimes election to office occurs because “she’s been a member long enough”, “it’s her turn”, “she’s always wanted to do this”, or “she really wants the past officer’s jewel.” Are any of these valid reasons for election? John Quincy Adams said, “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more, and become more, you are a leader.” Two words from that statement stand out to me: inspire and more. A leader will inspire others to stretch, try new ideas or old ideas different ways, think outside the box, or set new goals. A leader supports others to expect and give more – more effort, more commitment, more … Anyone can chart a safe course when no obstacles block the path. It takes a leader to anticipate the obsta- cles and open the path for followers to achieve the goal, sometimes without their having realized that they already negotiated the obstacles. A good leader first defines the goal. The last responsibility of a leader is expressing appreciation for achieving the goal and the effort required for that achievement. In between, the leader is a facilitator, a servant, to the needs of the followers and the work of achievement. Many have said that a leader without followers is just someone taking a walk. An officer who is not a lead- er may perform the duties of office but not contribute to the value of the organization or the relevance of the organization in today’s world. Our Order needs leaders as we continue to be tested by the pandemic, social shifts, and mounting financial and personal challenges. Leaders are not born. They are people who rise to meet challenges, simplify argu- ment and doubt to resolution, and invite others to join in the commonly respected solution. Leaders grow as they develop their skills. Let’s elect positive leaders into our offices to strengthen the fu- ture of the Order which we hold dear. Fraternally with commitment to encouraging leaders, s/ Elizabeth Mowry-Harbstreit
12 THE WISCONSIN ODD FELLOW APRIL 2021 Office of the General Commanding General Military Council, Patriarchs Militant Greetings Chevaliers and Ladies, Hello! I hope everyone is surviving this cold spell and is staying warm. We were having a rather mild winter this year. Then on February 2nd, Punxsutawney Phil came out and saw his shadow which meant six more weeks of winter. Well, I guess he was right. I spent three days digging out from the snow. As I write this, it is snowing again in Virginia. We must also remember our Brothers and Sisters in Texas who have gone through so much this winter. Hopefully, by the time you read this, the worst of the winter weather will be behind all of us. The 117th Annual Session of the General Military Council will be in Cincinnati from August 12-19. There- fore, this is the time of year when reports are due; this includes officer and committee reports. Also, if there are any items which you would like to discuss in session, they should be placed in the Advanced Journal. That would allow members to express their suggestions and ideas. The existing committee members will have an idea of what they need to work on before they come to session and allow time for any research which they feel is necessary. Remember, we have five months until session. The Advanced Journal should be in the hands of the representatives by June 1st. All reports have to be reviewed and collated when they go into the Journal. Your help is essential to make sure the session runs smoothly. Naturally, we will be having a Change of Command and electing new officers. This year we will be electing a new Adjutant General. General Clem Olson has decided not to seek re-election this year. I would like to thank you, Clem, for the time you have given to the Order and for the help which you have given to me. As you know the Pilgrimage to the Tomb of the Unknowns in Washington, D.C. has been cancelled again. Hopefully, we will be able to reestablish this tradition next year. I would like to report that Deputy General Commanding, Lt. Gen. Michael Bowers made the trip to Biloxi, MS for the Pilgrimage to Honor All Unknowns of the Civil War. I attended last year, but I had to cancel my plans. Thank you, General Mike. I hope to see you at session in the August. The Convention Committee has planned for a very active and pleasant stay while we are there. I am asking all Chevaliers and Ladies to bring and wear your uniforms for the Change of Command. Even if you attend The SGL Session and IARA sessions, the support for our new officers would be greatly appreciated. Also, if it is possible, try to attend at least one of the Youth Activities. This will give you a chance to see the future of Odd Fellowship. Each year they work hard to have a pro- gram to put on for the convention. Thank you for your support of the convention. God Bless and Stay Safe, s/ General John C. (Jack) Roberts General Commanding
APRIL 2021 THE WISCONSIN ODD FELLOW 13 International Women’s Day: Special Message from the CEO of SOS Children’s Villages International Ingrid Johansen celebrates the ambition of women and girls, and the global need for equality. Every girl has the ability... but not every girl has the opportunity. You can help change that. Today, on International Women’s Day, Ingrid Johansen (CEO of SOS Children’s Villages International) shares a special message to celebrate the de-termination of women and girls who take on leadership roles and contribute to a more equal future. Will you help break the generational cycle of poverty to empower women and girls around the world? With generous support from people like you, SOS Children’s Villages enables women and girls to: 1. Advocate for their rights. All women and girls have a right to be heard. Your support empowers them to share their voices, become leaders in their communities and actively shape their own lives. 2. Access equal educational opportunities. 130 million girls around the world are growing up without an education—and that number is even higher amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. In our villages, schools and youth employability programs, your gift gives girls and boys equal opportunities to learn, whether in the classroom or remotely. 3. Be protected from gender-based violence. One in three women worldwide will suffer from abuse during her lifetime. Your contribution helps raise awareness among teachers, healthcare providers and community leaders to prevent violence and support victims. 4. Achieve economic success. Women who work invest 90% of their income back into their families, compared with 35% for men. With your support, we empower women through education, job skills training and trade workshops to help their families thrive amidst COVID-19 and beyond. With strong women, changes happen. Please donate today to empower women and girls to build a brighter future! I.O.O.F. SOS Children’s Village Henry L. To date, the three Odd Fellows Professors, collectively, have authored more than 1,000 peer-reviewed research papers, advancing scientific understanding and treatment, and training the next genera- tion of ophthalmologists. “This is a trio of giants in oph- thalmology,” opines Wilmer Director Peter J. McDonnell, M.D. In the last year, the relationship blossomed further when the Odd Fellows announced it had raised their endowment to $3.5 million for the professorship endowment. “The Odd Fellows has made a strong case that glaucoma is an important area of research and that Dr. Jampel is on the doorstep of some important advances that could help a lot of people,” says Mark Ulrich, chairman of the Odd Fellows Visual Research Foundation. For Jampel, the Odd Fellows Professorship provides the necessary time and resources to explore research interests that he might otherwise not be able to pursue. In his case, these interests have the common theme of using medical and surgical therapies to improve patient outcomes from Henry Jampel outside Wilmer’s Green Spring Station clinic, glaucoma treatment. where he serves as director. Jampel says the Odd Fellows funding has allowed him to pursue collaborations with other investigators who have 01/01/2020 helped patients improve adherence to their glaucoma medi- cations and with those who are working to find ways to PUBLISHED IN WILMER MAGAZINE ANNUAL RE- better detect glaucoma through improved imaging technol- PORT 2019 ogies. 16 THE WISCONSIN ODD FELLOW APRIL 2021 Independent Order of Odd Fellows Membership Committee “A program of The Sovereign Grand Lodge and the International Association of Rebekah Assemblies to Obtain Membership Gains in all Units of all Branches of the Family of Odd Fellowship” March 2021 Greetings Brothers and Sisters, We are a couple of months into a new calendar year and even if Mother Nature for many of us is saying oth- erwise spring is almost here. And with spring comes new beginnings and a renewed hope that things will be returning to the new normal as more and more of us receive the coronavirus vaccine. What plans does your Lodge have for the coming months? Hopefully, those Lodges that have been dark will again be bright with light. Just as spring baseball practice has already begun for college and professional baseball teams it is also time for us to “Step Up to the Plate” and formulate a plan that will work within our community that will help to grow our Order. If your Lodge has not already taken the time done so this time of renewal is a great op- portunity to read the article in the July-August 2020 edition of the I.O.O.F. “Is Your Lodge ‘Hum Drum?’” on pages 8 thru 15. The questions that are asked are so simple yet do we as members honestly and earnestly seek to find the answers to the hard questions when it comes to membership or do we say “We can’t do that”? For the past year we have encouraged each of you to reach out in your communities and become actively in- volved. This does not always have to take place as a lodge activity it can be as an individual reaching out in the community and doing good deeds in the name of the Order. And when you do be sure you report these good deeds under the Good of the Order. Here an idea for an individual member. Do you own a 4 x 4 vehi- cle, and do you not mind driving in inclement weather? I know you are thinking why are you asking this ri- diculous question. Well, I will tell you why. There are essential workers who during the severe inclement weather many of us are experiencing as of the writing of this newsletter who need help getting to work and there are 4 x 4 Groups that make sure they get to work and back home. So, you might consider joining the group and guess what you would have an outlet for spreading Friendship and Love to a stranger not only the one you help but the group. And it is not just getting essential workers to work it extends to helping those who need other things who don’t have the transportation to safely get a doctor’s appointment or get needed supplies. By reaching out to provide this service you have an opportunity to share why you are extending a helping hand and then provide them with a brochure. If we as an Order are to survive then we as individual members must “Step Up to The Plate” and start to “Focus on What’s Important”. Ask yourself what is my special talent that I can use within the Order to help grow the Order. It does not have to be out driving your 4 x 4 in to get essential workers to work it could be just a simple act of kindness toward a neighbor and you might be surprised to see what that little gesture of kindness can produce. We might not always hit a home run, but we can all get on base and score runs to help our Order to help grow our Order and move into the future. Do not be afraid to bring new and different ideas to the discussion when planning for the future of your Lodge. In closing, congratulations to all those jurisdictions who not only had a gain in membership but also gained new Lodges this past year. Remember “The future is in Your Hands”. Membership is not just the work of a committee it takes individu- als willing to “Step of to the Plate”. In Friendship, Love and Truth The Membership Committee

Several places are still closed – like Canada border, as well many Provincial borders, New York City, Washington, D.C. But we are a positive thinking group and feel we might have a chance to pull off the 2021 trip. Alternate tour areas are also being considered if the border does not open into between the US and Canada, or different venues that are usually used are still closed. There are many great educational opportunities that we can and are exploring for if the need arises. Alternate situations are also being explored for our Canadian Youth if they can not cross the bor- der to the United States and vice versa. There are a total of 99 Youth scheduled for the trip and about half of those are from the canceled 2020 trip. Please pray and have positive thoughts that Covid-19 cases keep going down and we will get back to semi-normal living and the 2021 Pilgrimage for Youth trip will happen.
