Eric’sTRAINING CORNER IDCTA VP of EVENTING Equestrian winters in the Midwest have their ups and downs. Some days we embrace the cold day struggles, waking up to the “Rocky” movie theme, ready to down a raw egg for breakfast and work on that elusive “half-halt” and endless rides without stirrups. Other days, we may find ourselves binge scrolling through videos of our friends and riding peers on social media, basking in warmer parts of the country, riding under palm trees and on natural turf that we haven’t seen since last fall. As the New Year is off to a head start, the cold weather and the feeling you’ve been “left out of the party” makes procrastination of your resolutions easier than putting your left foot in the stirrup. We all need a little affirmation from time to time to let us know that our hard work is moving us toward something. Progress is one of the biggest motivators, but what if progress is so minute that you may not see it from day to day? We all could use a “hype man” telling us how awesome we are, but then our horse bares the truth, and is wondering if you’re joining him on this ride, or are you mentally riding the Kentucky CCI***** again? We all get caught up in the mundane, especially with the amount of time and work put into the horses we love. But to have something break that everyday cycle, whether it’s a profound moment riding, a welcoming nicker, or a bit of advice that you can relate to, the affirmation “you matter” makes the horse world that much more special. Last January 13th, I did a live-stream interview with Denny Emerson on “Four Key Attributes That Make a Successful Rider”. I have always admired Denny for being one of the great thinkers in the sport, and he has no reservations sharing his honest insights and opinions. It’s horsemen like Denny that not only have the experience to share, but also have advice that will endure the test of time. In preparation for this interview, we had several conversations revolving around our experiences with students, competition, our coaches, and the future of our sport, to find a subject that would make an impact on today’s equestrians. We could have talked about many subjects, but the common theme in our conversation was how to, for the horse’s sake, make riders better. To become a good rider, there is a plethora of information out there, but what holds you back from researching it? Sometimes we know what we should be doing, but opt not to because it’s easier. Getting good at anything takes a bit of discipline, as well as the hunger to evolve off the beaten path. My agenda behind these interviews is not to spoon feed information that will make you better (half that information you already know), but to inspire your next step toward progress. What makes a person like Denny’s advice different from some of the others you may hear from is that it’s simplistic and well thought out, with loads of personal experience behind it. Plus his stories are captivating and fun to listen to. If you missed the interview you may see it in its entirety on the IDCTA website. Go to www.IDCTA.org and click on the eventing announcements. Be sure to tune in February 10th for our next guest, Jimmy Wofford. Our Eventing Committee members are coming up with some fantastic educational and social activities this year. From Intro- duction to Hunting to Your First Show, the committee is putting together some excellent clinics. There is even a mentoring program that will aid anyone at their first show, with rules and direction in the works. For anyone organizing unrecognized or schooling shows, we are putting together show guidelines to have more uniformity among levels, and are hosting Zoom chats to see how we can help you. I’m sure by the next Scribe we will be unveiling some of the Eventing Committee’s ingenuity. Now make your next step a positive one. You’ll be surprised at how well the mo- mentum can take over. Even if you do get a negative result, don’t get discouraged. Keep your eye on the goal, and we’ll be here rooting for ya! ~ Eric G. Dierks, Eventing Committee Chair Eric Dierks started riding following his father’s footsteps in Dressage, then discovered Eventing, graduating as an “A” from the Fox River Valley Pony Club in Barrington, Illinois. After competing in the North American Young Riders Championships, he went on to graduate from Illinois State University with a B.S. in Environmental Health Studies, eventually pursuing horses full-time as both a competitor and instructor. A big ad- vocate for education, Eric has coached the Area IV Young Rider 3-Day Event Team at the North American Young Riders Championships, sat on the Board of Governors for the United States Pony Club, published countless articles on training, and continues to teach at his family’s Stonehedge Farm in Union Grove, Wisconsin. Today Eric con- tinues to educate and compete in the Eventing, Dressage, and Hunter/Jumper arenas. February 2021 | Page 4 IDCTA
IDCTA Presents: A Livestream with Jimmy Wofford February 10, 2021 | 7 p.m. CST Join Eric Dierks in a Livestream interview with Jimmy Wofford. Wofford has had a successful riding career, joining the USA Eventing Team in 1965 and remaining a member until 1985. During this time, he trained under Bert de Nemethy and Jack Le Goff. Wofford competed in the 1968 and 1972 Olympic Games on his famous horse Kilkenny, winning team silver both times, and was also named to the 1980 Olympic Games but did not compete due to the Olympic Committee’s boycott of the 1980 Summer Olympics. He was one of 461 athletes to receive a Congressional Gold Medal many years after. He also competed on the US Eventing Team at the 1970 World Championships at Punchestown, Ireland, winning an individual bronze with Kilkenny, and at the 1978 World Championship with Carawich, winning a team bronze. Wofford’s records also include five wins—each on a different horse—at five US National Championships, a team gold medal at the 1967 Pan Am Games, and two wins at the Rolex Kentucky Three Day (1981 with Carawich and 1986 with The Optimist — coming out of retirement to ride the horse for student and fellow Olympian, Karen O’Connor). He also competed very successfully abroad from 1959 –1986. In all, Wofford competed at the advanced level over 20 years. During this time, he also raced as a steeplechase jockey, and fox hunted for over 20 years. Wofford retired as a competitor in 1986. He continues to ride, along with his wife, two daughters, and three grandsons. Fatima Pawlenko-Kranz: It’s The Little Things Snow is on the ground and the tem- peratures are frigid, but the spring show season is already starting to heat up! IDCTA is holding a series of Virtual Dressage Shows, soon to be followed by actual in-the-flesh shows. If you’re planning on show- ing in either or both, it’s time to start practicing! To that end, I’d like to share a few little tips that many riders aren’t aware of or overlook, losing valuable points in dressage tests. Your entry into the ring at the begin- ning of the test is the best time to set the tone for the entire ride. The judge will notice confidence (if not competence), so how you comport yourself in those first moments can go a long way towards a good score. The halt is the very first movement of most tests, and many riders tend to use it as a moment to let down and take a breath. However, the halt is a MOVEMENT, and should be ridden as such! How can a halt be a movement? Because the rider should ride the horse INTO the walk, and the horse should be actively engaged between the rider’s leg and rein aids, ready to go at the rider’s signal. Decelerating into a dump onto the forehand is not what we are looking for when we score the halt. As you ride half halts, so you should ride the halt, keeping your horse engaged and energetic underneath you. Likewise, the ride up the centerline and turn in front of the judge is an area I see many riders miss. Many are former or current jumper riders (eventers) and are used to using their eyes to look ahead towards the next movement. However, in a test, the judge likes to see yours eyes up and for- ward UNTIL you make your turn, not before. Practice coming up the centerline, your gaze fixed confidently above C, and prepare for your turn so that you can make it accurately without looking to the side, and especially without cutting your corner. The judge will take notice! Straightness is so important on the A-C line during a test. If your horse is not as obedient to your leg as you would like, and you have trouble keeping him straight, don’t hesitate to widen your reins to help them. Judges like to see riders actively correcting their horses, and it will not ruin your test! On the contrary, riding a wiggly centerline will score much worse than actively engaging your aids to keep your horse as straight as they are capable of. It all boils down to practice, practice, practice. But practice does not mean trotting endless 20 meter circles. You must pay atten- tion to the small things to make the entire test come together successfully. Happy training, everyone! Next month we’ll talk about transitions. IDCTA February 2021 | Page 7
Dinners With Katie By Mary Jo Downen As many of you know, the equestrian world suffered a significant loss this past November with the passing of Katie Lindsay. There have been several write-ups acknowledging her passing and detail- ing her many accomplishments and accolades; many of you know her as the organizer or the Wayne Derby, a former IDCTA board member, a Technical Delegate, a recipient of the Wofford Cup, and so much more. Her contributions to the sport of eventing are well documented, so I’d like to pay tribute instead to the person behind the accomplishments, because she was truly one-of-a-kind. And though our relationship began as a working one, it developed into a true friendship as the years passed by. My friendship with Katie evolved gradually over many years. We first crossed paths when I began competing in recognized events in the late 80s, and I made it a point to volunteer my time to Area IV. This lead to my producing the Area IV newsletters for some years, and after working on and off together on the newsletter, Katie eventually asked me for help with the program for Wayne-DuPage Horse Trials, Katie’s beloved Max, Official Mascot of the Wayne Eventing Derby which she organized. The horse trials eventually developed into the Photo by Katie Lindsay Maui Jim Horse Trials, which grew to include Advanced levels at its participating in. IDCTA Clinic Affiliation Program In order to provide education opportunities for our members, we are establishing a program to affiliate with those barns who are giving clinics. We would like to be able work with a few barns like yours on two clinics per year. IDCTA requests that the hosting barn will: • Reserve two ride spots specifically for IDCTA members (if not filled three weeks before the clinic start date, these two slots can be filled with any rider). • Provide an auditor discount of $5-$10/day to IDCTA members. • Display the IDCTA banner during the clinic. • Provide advertising materials for the IDCTA Scribe and Social Media. IDCTA will: • Provide Insurance for the event through the IDCTA policy and furnish the barn with release forms for rider and auditor to sign. • Subsidize the barn with $100 to offset a small portion of the clinic cost. • Provide a rider subsidy of $400 per clinic for riders who are IDCTA members - If there are up to four IDCTA member riders, each rider would receive $100; if more than four, each rider would receive a portion of the $400 (i.e., if a clinic had six riders who were IDCTA members, each would receive $66). Each rider would be limited to two subsidies per year. • Provide an IDCTA member to man the auditor check-in table during the clinic. • Advertise the clinic on IDCTA’s Facebook page and on USDF Region 2’s Facebook page (using the communication form). In order for your barn to participate in this clinic affiliation program, your barn must be an IDCTA Business Member. This program is limited to two clinics per year. As an IDCTA business member, your barn would receive the following benefits: • One IDCTA Regular, Junior Rider or Young Rider membership including a Group Membership to USDF(go to http://www.usdf.org/join/ GMBenefits.pdf for a complete list of GMO benefits). • $60 of advertising in the IDCTA Scribe (good for one membership year, not cumulative). • An expanded listing in the IDCTA website Service Directory (www. idcta.org/membership/idcta-ser- vice-directory). • A condensed version of your website Service Directory listing in the IDCTA Scribe(see current issue for details). • Links to your website and/or email from both Service Directories, as well as any advertising you run in the Scribe. • Event listings on the IDCTA Calendar, both website and Scribe. • Email Blasts utilizing the IDCTA email list, a great way to advertise your business. If you would like to participate in this clinic affiliation program, your barn will be assigned a barn ambassador to ensure that there will be continuity and regular communication between the barn and the IDCTA board. We are excited about the program and are sure that there are benefits for each organization. IDCTA February 2021 | Page 13
