EMAC applies to employers with more than five employees in Massachusetts and applies regardless of whether the employer offers health coverage to its employees. • The current EMAC contribution rate is 0.34% up to the annual wage cap of $15,000, with a potential maximum cost of $51 per employee per year. • For the wages paid in the years 2018 and 2019, the EMAC contribution will increase to 0.51% up to the annual wage cap of $15,000, which increases the potential maximum cost per employee to $77 per employee per year. The Employer Medical Assistance Supplement The Employer Medical Assistance Contribution Supplement applies to employers with more than five employees in Massachusetts whose non-disabled employees obtain health insurance either from MassHealth (excluding the premium assistance program) or subsidized coverage through the Massachusetts ConnectorCare program. The contribution is 5% of annual wages for each non-dis- abled employee, up to the annual wage cap of $15,000, for a maximum of $750 per affected employee per year. The contributions collected will help offset the Commonwealth’s cost of providing health insurance to your employees. This supplemental contribution only applies to those employees on state-subsidized coverage. 4
JANUARY UPDATE from Ken Here go, a brand new year – welcome to 2018! I am excited to welcome and am very much looking forward to working with Pat Slade, our 2018 Board President, and the entire Board of Directors. Rounding out our Executive Board are Sara Young who moves to Chairperson, Bruce Feldman who becomes our 1st Vice President and Mike Luster who remains as our trusted Treasurer. Bill Scott continues as our steadfast At-Large member, and we welcome Tony Sapienza onto the Eboard as 2nd Vice President. Please see our full 2018 Board Slate on the following page. A fond farewell to Matt Anzivino who exited the Board as Chairman at the close of 2017. Matt has been a mainstay of the Chamber over his seven (7!) year tenure, has been a leader of our programs and initiatives, and person- ally extremely helpful to me. Matt was the first Board Member to serve four years on the Executive Board during my tenure, and I shall miss him greatly. During his time on the Eboard, Matt led our organizational growth, chaired our Tourism Council, and was instrumental in the growth of our two main fundraisers (Education Golf Tournament and Auction) and enhancing our Rockport initiatives. I want to express my sincere appreciation to Sara Young for her service as our 2017 Board President. Sara spent hundreds of hours last year leading the Board, attending ALL of our events, and working directly with me and our Chamber team. Sara was a main reason for our fantastic 2017 and is very much still a part of our leadership team. A little bit about our incoming President: Pat has been the Editor of the Manchester Cricket for 15 years, and a Manchester (by-the-Sea) local for over 40 years, haling originally from Martha’s Vine- yard. As a member of the Gov’t Affairs Council, Pat is very involved with our economic initiatives and Chamber programs overall. See more in our year-end Love Cape Ann podcast HERE. Our mission and three main priorities remain unchanged this year: • Promotion: of our business members and the Cape Ann region as a visitor destination • Economic Development: toward the overall enhancement of the business environment to help local businesses grow and to encourage new businesses to locate to the area • Education: of our members on business related matters, and working with our regional schools towards the educational enrichment of Cape Ann’s next generation of business professionals And of course, let’s not forget the Cape Ann License Plate – we see more on the road every day. The Cape Ann Community Foundation manages the license plate proceeds, and in 2017 awarded its first grants, totalling $12,000 to three local non-profits (Action Inc., Backyard Growers, Cape Ann Farmers Market). We are looking forward to seeing many more of our Cape’s plates on the road, and award- ing additional grants this year. The recent impact of the Chamber’s Programs and Services and high level of re-engagement with the Cape Ann community is a credit to our small, and incredibly talented and dedicated Chamber team. Michelle Budrow, Marketing & Communications Director and a Glosta downtown gal –Michelle manages all (four!) of our websites and many more that number of social media accounts, our weekly At-A-Glance Newsletters and monthly e-magazine Soundings, all events promotion including weekly eblasts, publications advertising, event photographer, and more. It is amazing to realize that Michelle has only two full years with the Chamber – Michelle gets it done! Charlene Delaney, Visitor Services and another Gloucester gal – Charlene joined the Chamber part time in May helping with our front desk operations and assisting visitors. Charlene’s love for and knowledge of the region, coupled with her boundless enthusiasm make her a great asset for our team. 5
JANUARY UPDATE continued Kerry McKenna, Events Director and heralding from Annisquam - Kerry has been with the Chamber going on four years, and continues to out-do herself in growing our events. By far, our Chamber does more events than any on the North Shore (Commonwealth?), and they are the best-known aspect of our work. Kerry leads our over 50 (fifty!) events including networking, seminars, Businesswomen, Ribbon Cuttings, holidays, and our twelve major / signature events. She also continues to break new ground in leading the re-structuring of our Auction and partnering with the city to lead the three Gloucester Block Parties, arguably the best ever! Ken Riehl, CEO, residing adjacent to the Great Marsh in our smallest Cape Ann Community , Essex – Ken is entering into year five with this incredible organization, and could not be more honored and pleased to work with you all towards the continuous enhancement of this region as an incredible place to work, live and play. Barb Sienkiewicz, Office Manager, and another Glosta gal, in Lanesville - took over our Office op- erations about two years ago, as if she had been doing it all her life. Make no mistake, running the Chamber Office is no easy task, as Barb not only manages all office logistical matters, but she also leads our visitor centers. These are especially busy in the summertime with as many as three hundred visitors and calls a day qne includes managing our over a dozen volunteers and interns. In addition, Barb also takes a major role in supporting our events, publications, the Cape Ann License Plate, and this year has also started to work in a membership role. Debbie Walter, Finance, a Rockporter, transitioned into our part time finance lead role in 2016. Debbie continues doing great work, with the highest compliment being that I do not need to think about the day-to-day banking transactions. Debbie also leads the finances for the Cape Ann Community Foundation, which includes not only the Cape Ann License Plate but also fiscal agent capacity on major initiatives like the Cape Ann Plein Air event. Peter Webber, Sr. VP and also hailing from Rockport, celebrated his 12th year with the Chamber, and remains our senior statesman, Rockport lead, Government Affairs liaison, and sits on the Executive Board of Discover Gloucester and is a Trustee For the Essex National Heritage Area. Peter is our rock in our often frenzied office environment, and his knowledge and love of the region, the business com- munity and our residents make his services invaluable. I look forward to working with you, as we roll up our sleeves to make 2018 another fantastic year. 6

CAPE ANN PLEIN AIR Update Cape Ann Plein Air Celebrates 2017 Success, Names New Project Manager for 2018 While the buzz created by this October’s Cape Ann Plein Air 2017 continues to surround the region’s arts and cultural community, organizers are already well along in planning next year’s national out- door painting competition. CAPA 2017 was a tremendous success by any measure -- generating more revenue for artists, boost- ing our region’s creative economy, creating more visibility for Cape Ann as a preeminent arts and cultural destination, and presenting more opportunities for businesses and other supporters to be part of this effort. CAPA again attracted the nation’s top plein air painters -- in just its second year, after a well-received debut in October 2016, CAPA has emerged as the premier plein air event in New England and one of the nation’s top competitions. It’s no wonder then that organizers immediately began planning CAPA 2018 – setting the dates for this year’s event (October 7-15), launching a search for 2018 jurors, and most recently, naming a new project manager. Susan Gould-Coviello Named 2018 Project Manager Susan Gould-Coviello of Essex – who participated in CAPA 2016 and joined the CAPA Steering Com- mittee in 2017 – was named project manager by the Steering Committee in December. Susan has a long history of involvement in the Cape Ann community. She is the executive director of the North Shore Health Project, which promotes wellness in people living with HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis C. Susan is also served on the Essex Board of Selectmen and the Manchester-Essex Regional School Commit- tee, was a founding member of the Essex Merchants Group, and she’s on the Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. Susan has long been part of the region’s business and cultural community, as owner, buyer and designer of Susan Gould-Coviello Antique Textiles, which deals in 18-20th century textiles, laces and linens, decorative accessories, jewelry and related antiquities. She has also been a key organizer of Essex’s Wet Paint event. Susan’s community, cultural and business experience – together with her work on the first two CAPA events – makes her an ideal choice to take on the 2018 event’s lead project management role. She’ll be following in the footsteps of Karen Ristuben, who was the CAPA’s original project manager, working with organizers to launch the competition in 2016 and returning for the very successful CAPA 2017. Karen, who led the search for her replacement, will remain involved in CAPA – one of many cultural initiatives in which she plays a leadership role. Karen is Board President of the Rocky Neck Art Colony and a member of the MassCreative Leadership Council. She was recently named program director for the Creative County Initiative, a group focused on strengthening the arts and culture ecosystems of Essex County with support from Barr Foundation and Essex County Community Foundation. BUSINESS Tips & Tricks Top New Year’s Resolutions for Business Success Article by Susan Ward The end of the year is a good time to reflect on your business’s progress over the past year and plan how you want your business to develop. Do you want increased success in the coming year or the chance to enjoy the success you’ve achieved more? These top New Year’s resolutions are designed to help you do both - strike a better work-life balance and increase your business success in the new year. 1) Learn how to delegate and do more of it. There are so many things to do when you’re running a small business, it’s easy to delude ourselves that we need to do all of them. Then we wonder why we’re so tired and frazzled and have no time to do anything else! Let someone else do some of the tasks for a change. Delegation is the key to a healthy work-life balance. 2) Promote your business regularly and consistently. Too often the task of promoting a small business slips to the bottom of the to-do list in the press of urgent tasks. If you want to attract new customers, you have to make promotion a priority. One of your top New Year’s resolutions should be to hire a marketing expert or take the time to create a marketing plan on your own and follow through. Try some of these Low-Cost Ways to Promote Your Business to get started. 3) Make business planning a weekly event. Planning is vital if you want a healthy, growing business. Business planning lets you take stock of what worked and what didn’t work, and helps you set new directions or adjust old goals. So why do it just once a year or once a quarter? Set aside time each week to review, adjust, and look forward - or even better, make business planning a part of each day. Not only will this help you avoid costly mistakes and stay on track, but you’ll feel more focused and relaxed. 4) Learn something new. What you choose to learn may be directly related to your business or completely unrelated. Learn- ing something new will add to your skills and add a new dimension of interest to your life - another important part of achiev- ing a healthy work-life balance and increasing your business success. Learn How to Choose the Right Business Consultant, Trainer or Business Coach. Depending on how you choose to learn, you may meet new and interesting people, who may become customers, colleagues or friends. How will you find the time to learn something new? By delegating, remember? 5) Join a new business organization or networking group. There’s nothing like talking to other business people for sparking new ideas, refining old ones, and making contacts. Whether it’s a group specifically designed for networking or an organi- zation dedicated to a particular type of business, in person or over the internet, making the effort to be a part of a group will revitalize you and your business. These 22 Tips to Use at Your Next Networking Event will make your next time out a more successful experience. 6) Give something back to your community. There are all kinds of worthy organizations that make a difference in your com- munity. Those that give get. As I say in Top 10 Ways to Get Known, nothing will seed and grow goodwill for you and your business better than giving back to your community. So make one of your top New Year’s resolutions to find a cause that matters to you and give what you can. Make this the year that you serve on a committee, be a mentor, volunteer or make regular donations to the groups in your community that try to make the place you live a better place. 7) Put time for you on your calendar. It’s so important to take the time to recharge and refresh yourself; a healthy work-life balance and your small business’s success demands time out. All work and no play is a recipe for mental and physical disas- ter. So if you have trouble freeing up time to do the things you enjoy, write time regularly into your schedule to “meet with yourself” and stick to that commitment. If you won’t invest in yourself, who will? 8) Set realistic goals. Goal setting is a valuable habit - if the goals lead to success rather than distress. Resolve that the goals you set will be goals that are achievable, rather than unrealistic pipe dreams that are so far out of reach they only lead to frustration. If you have trouble setting realistic goals, see Goal Setting Is the First Step to Achievement for a formula to help. 9) Don’t make do; get a new one. Is there a piece of equipment in your office that’s interfering with your success or some- thing that you lack that’s making your working life harder? Whether it’s an old fax machine that’s a pain to use or the need for a new employee to lighten your work load, stop putting off getting what you need. The irritation of making do just isn’t worth it. 10) Drop what’s not working for you and move on. All products aren’t going to be super sellers, all sales methods aren’t go- ing to work for everyone, and all suppliers or contractors aren’t going to be ideally suited to your business. If a technique or a product or a business relationship isn’t working for you, stop using it. Don’t invest a lot of energy into trying to make the unworkable workable. Move on. Something better will turn up. To a Better Year Achieving a healthy work-life balance is like maintaining a good relationship; you have to keep working on it. But if you ap- ply these top New Year’s resolutions throughout the year, you’ll not only feel better but have more energy to put into your business and make it the success you deserve!
