April 2018 Business Community Support Brings United to ELM The Elmira Corning Regional Airport (ELM) is excited to welcome back United Airlines. Beginning April 9, United will offer two daily departures to its hub at New York/Newark Liberty International Airport. From Newark, United offers 150 destinations in North and South America, Europe, the Middle East and Asia. “We’re very excited about the new service with United. It provides more options for business and leisure travelers in the Southern Tier. This in combination with the terminal renovation is a very exciting period for the Elmira Corning Regional Airport,” said the Director of Aviation at the Elmira Corning Regional Airport, Bill Hopper. Newark Liberty’s location and rail links make it the most convenient hub airport for travelers originating in north and central New Jersey, parts of New York City including Wall Street, and southern New York State. The airline is also upgrading the customer experience at EWR at every point of the customer's journey with more than 20 new dining establishments, world-class retail shops and leading-edge technology. United is upgrading check-in facilities and baggage screening systems and will unveil a United Polaris lounge for international business class customers in summer 2018. The success of attracting United Airlines was very much the ELM is small enough to be hometown and big enough to be worldwide! result of the business community’s efforts. ELM reached out to the Chemung County Chamber of Commerce to mobilize leaders of the business community in Chemung County as well as our neighbors in Steuben and Schuyler counties, resulting in pledged support from 18 business leaders. This support ultimately convinced United that ELM is a smart addition to their international network. ELM and Chemung County are very appreciative of the support. Additional service at ELM includes Delta with connections to its Detroit hub, serving 100 non-stop destinations and the Southern Tier's only direct flights to Florida on Allegiant Air. These three airlines complement each other very well and truly make ELM the region's airport of choice. ELM is also the Southern Tier’s only airport with direct interstate access via Exit 50 off I-86. If you haven't checked for air travel at ELM, it is highly recommended that you visit flyELM.com. Starting April 9, it is likely that where you want to go can be achieved at ELM.

www.MarkTwainCountry.com Mark Twain Country Finger Lakes House Brings Regional Food & Drink to Elmira When Bill and Karen Mott opened The Finger Lakes House last fall, they envisioned a gathering place that served up the region’s food & drink in an environment as welcoming as “an old friend’s lake home.” And from all indications, they seem to have succeeded. Located in the newly renovated W. Water Street row houses in Downtown Elmira, The Finger Lakes House offers a fresh point of view on the common tavern experience. By partnering with many of the region’s growers, wineries and breweries, the Motts see the potential to create a destination that will promote Elmira as “the Eastern gateway to the Finger Lakes,” and give both visitors and locals a place to enjoy New York State drinks, coupled with foods influenced by the region’s “farm to table” cuisine. “We spent 22 years living in Western NY raising our children,” explained Bill. “Moving to the Finger Lakes area 3 years ago we expected to find a bounty of local beverages in the restaurants and pubs that we frequented, but to our surprise, the choices were extremely limited. Visiting the lake venues we came to the realization that bringing the bounty of the Finger Lakes and New York State beverages to our new home in Elmira would be our mission.” Finger Lakes House is open Tuesday – Thursday from 4 p.m. – 11p.m., and Friday & Sunday from 1 p.m. – midnight. To learn more, go to www.FingerLakesHouse.com. Southern Finger Lakes Travel Feature Airs on PBS The Travels with Darley feature on the Southern Finger Lakes (Elmira, Corning, Watkins Glen & Hammondsport) kicked off the show’s 2018 Cable TV season last month on PBS stations across the country. The travel series spotlights destinations around the globe in 30 ½-hour segments. Darley Newman and her camera team visited the Southern Finger Lakes in fall of 2017 to film for the episode. While in Chemung County she visited Harris Hill Soaring, the National Soaring Museum and the Mark Twain Study and burial site, all of which are included in the regional feature. In addition to airing her show in the U.S., Darley will be releasing her 2018 season to Amazon Prime and other streaming sites. This means the series will be also be available for viewing in the UK, Japan, Germany, Austria, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Spain, France, Italy, Mexico, Latin America and Malaysia. The Southern Finger Lakes episode is the first destination in New York State to be featured in the travel series and will place our region alongside such international hot spots as Tokyo, Hong Kong, Martinique and Great Britain.
Member News Cameron Presents 1st Annual Wreaths Across America Golf Tournament On May 26, 2018, Cameron Manufacturing & Design is beginning their fund raising efforts for the annual Wreaths across America campaign. Each December at every National Cemetery across the country, volunteers place commemorative wreaths on the gravestones of Veterans who rest within the cemetery confines. Every wreath placement is only possible because of donations and fundraising efforts. While the number of wreaths placed locally in Woodlawn Cemetery has grown each year, sadly, a wreath on each Veteran grave has yet to be achieved. Nevertheless, with your help event organizers trust that in 2018 the 100% coverage goal is achievable. CMD is honored and privileged to invite you to participate, sponsor or donate to the 1st Annual Wreaths Across America fund raising golf tournament. All proceeds from this fundraiser benefit the Wreaths Across America effort within our local community. Any excess funds after reaching the 100% coverage goal locally would shift to Bath National Cemetery and helping them achieve their 100% coverage goal. To find out how you can participate, sponsor, or donate, please contact CMD National Account Executive and United States Marine Corps Veteran Ted Peet at tpeet@camfab.com or by calling 607-739-3606. Details about sponsorship opportunities are also available on CMD’s website at www.cameronmfg.com. Guthrie Receives Women's Choice Award Save the Date! Center for Twain Studies Sponsors Writing Contest The Center for Mark Twain Studies is sponsoring a creative writing contest for area students in grades 2-6, encouraging students to explore Mark Twain’s legacy in Elmira and the Southern Tier, and to submit their own creative writings by April 16. While staying at Quarry Farm, Mark Twain often encouraged his children to create and tell their own stories based off the tiles adorning the parlor fireplace. The 24 tiles around the fireplace depict fables written by ancient Greek storyteller, Aesop, who utilized animals, such as crows, snakes, mice, and foxes, to illustrate moral lessons. Students from schools within a 25-mile radius of Quarry Farm are encouraged to access the fireplace tiles on the CMTS website, marktwainstudies.org, and create their own stories based on the tile images. Three winners from three different schools will be chosen by CMTS staff. CMTS has received special permission to give the winners a personal tour inside Quarry Farm, normally only open to Twain Scholars. The winning students will be able to read their story next to the Quarry Farm parlor fireplace, tour Quarry Farm, and enjoy Mark Twain’s favorite dessert: gingerbread, vanilla ice cream, and lemonade. Submissions for the contest should be submitted by Monday, April 16, to the Center for Mark Twain Studies, Elmira College, 1 Park Place, Elmira, NY 14901. Additional information, including a virtual tour of Quarry Farm, can be found online at marktwainstudies.org. Member News Community Arts of Elmira Promotes Community Built Public Art Workshops In December 2017 and February 2018, Community Arts of Elmira hosted several Public Art Mural Workshops with artist Bradford Leiby. Participants in these workshops studied Community Built Public Art, including multiple genres of mural painting, such as urban and graffiti. Leiby and students will install the murals designed in these sessions in the spring of 2018 on the Community Arts of Elmira ArtWay Public Art Wall. The workshops were free and open to the public, made possible, in part, with public funds from NYSCA’s Decentralization Program, administered regionally by The ARTS Council of the Southern Finger Lakes. Similar programs will follow, expanding this program, Elmira Infinite Canvas. April 6 and 7, artist Annemarie Zwack will lead the next educational design sessions, one for stakeholders and one for the general community, presented with Hilliard Corporation sponsorship and a QuickARTS* grant, focusing on the Clemens Square Gateway wall at 120 N. Main Street, Elmira, a building site under development by Jim Capriotti of Capriotti Properties, adjacent to Gallery 120, a partnership with Community Arts of Elmira, Capriotti Properties and Elmira Second District Councilman Brent Stermer. Groups, agencies, organizations, businesses and manufacturers considering a public art installation at their locations are invited to contact Community Arts at info@communityartsofelmira.com to learn more about partnerships with the Elmira Infinite Canvas program. *This activity is made possible in part by the QuickARTS grant program administered regionally by The ARTS Council of the Southern Finger Lakes and funded by the Community Foundation of Elmira-Corning and the Finger Lakes, Inc. Glove House Opens Vocational Training Program Glove House is proud to announce that, through a grant awarded from the Community Foundation of Elmira Corning & the Finger Lakes, beginning on January 2, 2018, Glove House opened a Vocational Training Program called THRIVE. This program is committed to instilling the soft skills and hard training skills that will increase a youth’s opportunity to enter the work force. The program serves youth in Glove House residential and community programs. It consists of three phases: classroom work, an internal work program, and on-the-job coaching at external employment. Glove House believes that in order for our youth to have a positive future, they need the ability to be able to secure and maintain employment, ultimately enabling them to be able to provide for themselves and be strong community members. Youth employment can have a positive effect on both social growth and development. When youth are able to maintain a positive employment experience, a higher self-esteem and a sense of well-being is a result. Ultimately, the transition from childhood into adulthood moves youth toward self-reliance. By securing and maintaining employment, youth are able to gain a sense of future and confidence to be able to provide for themselves and be contributing members of society. Glove House has hired a full-time Vocational Coordinator to teach the skills necessary to gain employment, provide mentoring and coaching in order to develop workforce skills and maintain employment, as well as work with the community to procure employment opportunities. If you know of a business or organization that would like to be a part of “changing the future – one child at a time” please contact Anthony Novakowski at anovakowski@glovehouse.org to explore opportunities.
