APRIL 2021 | ISSUE 4 MEMBER PROTECTION – Would you like to help? NSWFA is reviewing its member protection policy and processes in the context of a new National Integrity Framework developed by Sport Integrity Australia. This is a relatively new Federal Government agency with oversight of all sports bodies. The Sport Integrity Framework will be binding on national sports organisations, like the AFF, and in turn their state counterparts like NSWFA. The Framework covers a wide range of issues in sport. The area of greatest relevance to NSWFA is Member Protection and Child Safeguarding. You can read more about Sport Integrity Australia and the National Integrity Framework here. https://www.sportintegrity.gov.au/what-we-do/national-integrity-framework As well as reviewing our policies on member protection and child safety, we need to strengthen our capacity to deal with complaints and other member/child protection issues. First, we’re looking for people who can fill the role of Member Protection Information Officer. The MPIO’s role is to offer advice to members who have a concern about conduct issues affecting them or others. The MPIO is the primary point of contact for people with a complaint or other concerns about member protection. MPIOs can help them understand the member protection process and consider options for dealing with their concerns. An MPIO should be a good listener, empathetic, calm, patient, good at getting to the facts, analysing situations and offering sound, practical advice. It’s important to know that MPIO’s do not investigate and resolve complaints. Their role is to help people navigate the member protection and child safeguarding process. Qualification as an MPIO involves doing an online training course with Play By The Rules. Information on the MPIO course is here. https://www.playbytherules.net.au/online-courses/mpio-online-course Our qualified MPIO is Jess Brooks who can be contacted at: childprotection@nswfencing.org.au We need more than one MPIO so if you are interested in doing the course please let us know. Contact secretary@nswfencing.org.au
APRIL 2021 | ISSUE 4 COACH ACCREDITATION STATUS Some NSW coaches do not currently appear on the AFF’s website listing of accredited coaches because their credentials are not up to date. These include membership of NSWFA, a current Working With Children Check certificate, a General Principles of Coaching certificate from Sport Australia and a first aid certificate. Lack of current accreditation is an insurance risk for coaches and clubs. Coaches whose accreditation is not up to date should attend to this as soon as possible. Please check your status on the AFF Portal. https://www.ausfencing.org/portal/ Equipment standards The NSWFA Board has reviewed equipment standards for State competitions. The only change is that the minimum standard for masks and jackets/breeches for Under15s will now be 350N. We recommend to fencers and parents they use the FIE standard 1600N masks and 800N jackets/breeches. Fencers planning to enter the Australian Under 15 Championships in July will still need FIE standard 1600N masks and 800N jackets/breeches. For this and other events a limited number of 1600N masks will be available for hire for $10 per day. See the latest equipment standards here: https://nswfencing.org.au/wp- content/uploads/2020/03/NSWFA-Equipment-Standards-2021.pdf Order Now the NSW Jacket in time for U15 & Cadet Nationals Whilst wearing the new jacket is encouraged, it is not mandatory.
