NOVA Open 2014 Warmachine/Hordes Draft Primer Preparatory Packet for Warmachine/Hordes Events at the 2014 NOVA Open Overarching Rules Primer Rationale This draft primer is designed to relay our plans for NOVA Open 2014. It is subject to change and your input as a potential attendee is strongly requested via forums or to novaopen@gmail.com. The rationale for the design of our various events: Time – A good portion of the feedback from Sportsmanship at the NOVA Open 2013 included a collective need to explore the The NOVA Open prides itself on a tradition of rest of the convention. With that in mind, event sportsmanship, and on the high marks attendees year times and formats have been tweaked to allow after year give to the atmosphere and sportsmanship Warmachine & Hordes players the chance to experienced at the NOVA Open. take part in seminars, other events, etc. without To that end: having to give up playing in their favorite event. Speaking on Sportsmanship and what constitutes a true Variety – One of the great things about the winner, Jesse Owens once said, Steamroller rules is its adaptability and "[Winning] starts with complete command of the flexibility. This allows a wide variety of events fundamentals. Then it takes desire, determination, to be run which can appeal to a wide array of discipline, and self-sacrifice. And finally, it takes a gamers. In our effort to reach a wide player great deal of love, fairness and respect for your fellow base, and offer you as many unique and man. Put all these together, and even if you don't win, challenging opponents as possible, our aim is how can you lose?" to avoid similar events. Tradition – Warmachine events at conventions have a few staples everyone expects to see. At the Open, we understand that not every player will Typically, these are events that just cannot be become best friends. However, we do ask that you treat run by small clubs, or are better suited for a your fellow competitors with the respect you would larger venue. Team Tournaments, Masters accord a peer while you are here. style events, and Caster Madness (Who's the Boss?) are a few examples. We made sure not NOVA event organizers would prefer that you restrict to leave these favorites out. your battles to the tabletop and that every game end with Steamroller 2014 Beta Test – At the time of a hearty handshake! the writing of this document, the 2014 Steamroller Tournament packet is still in Beta Testing and not widely available. Due to this fact, the event details are subject to change prior to the opening of NOVA Open 2014 Registration on February 1, 2014. When the SR2014 packet is finalized (sometime in January), this Primer will be updated to reflect any necessary adjustments and potential attendee feedback. 1.0 Tournament Format All of NOVA Open's Warmachine and Hordes events will utilize the array of special rules and options available in the Steamroller 2014 Tournament Packet (SR2014), unless otherwise noted. While SR2014 is currently being Beta Tested at this time, once finalized, this packet is available for free on Privateer Press' website, and will be available for viewing at the Judge's desk. http://privateerpress.com/organized- play/steamroller-tournaments. All events will use following Tournament Variants unless otherwise noted: Army List: BASELINE (Specialists are NOT used) – Second list optional. All lists are subject to the same point constraints and must be led by warcasters/warlocks from the same faction. Players cannot include the same version of a model or unit with FA:C in more than one list. Painting: BASELINE - Painted armies are not required The NOVA Open, LLC Page 1 The NOVA Open 2014 – August 28 – 31, 2014
NOVA Open 2014 Warmachine/Hordes Draft Primer Preparatory Packet for Warmachine/Hordes Events at the 2014 NOVA Open Number of Rounds: BASELINE – All players participate in every round. Play a number of rounds required to determine a clear winner. Game Timing: BASELINE – Basic round times are randomly increased or decreased by a variable (d3 x extension length) that is not revealed to players. During each game, one turn extension is available to each player. Dice down is called when round time is complete. Scenario: BASELINE – (Reinforcements are NOT used) – For each round, the TO selects a scenario that all players will play. The TO keeps scenarios secret until the start of each round of games. Victory: BASELINE – Assassination Victory, Scenario Victory, Control Points Tiebreaker, Army Points Remaining Tiebreaker, Army Points Destroyed Tiebreaker Final Standings: Finals Table (See SR2014 Packet) 1.1 Army Lists Tournament sheets will be available at the Judge’s Table. Pre-generated lists are also acceptable, but must be legible. All lists will be validated prior to the first round of each tournament. All lists must contain one, and only one, warcaster / warlock. 1.2 Registration 30 minutes before the scheduled start of an event, army list(s) may be turned in at the Judges’ desk. This will register you for that event. A last call for army lists will occur 15 minutes prior to the event start time. At 10 minutes prior to the event start time, army lists will no longer be accepted in order to allow list validation and pairings to be made before the event start time. The Tournament Organizer may make exceptions to this rule at his/her discretion. For instance: if there is an odd number of players and another player would help avoid a bye, etc. NOTE: Players may not turn in army lists for another player; everyone has to turn in their own list. 1.3 Terrain Terrain at the NOVA Open has been designed to combine a pleasing aesthetic and playability. The following terrain guidelines are in effect for the duration of the NOVA Open: Hills are 1” tall regardless of actual height, and thus do not block Line of Sight to any model. They do grant the standard elevation bonuses. Fences, small ruins and barricades all count as linear obstacles. They are 1” tall, ½” wide, and 4” long when possible. Like standard Linear Obstacles, they offer cover when within 1”, and confer a +2DEF bonus when using reach to attack over them. Line of Sight blocking items are non-destructible, and block line of sight completely regardless of any windows or doorways they may have. Forests are area terrain, and are defined by the scenic bases the trees themselves reside upon. Water / swamp effects are area terrain, and are defined by the scenic base the terrain resides upon. All water / swamp effects are considered shallow water. When in doubt, confer with your opponent before the game to agree on what each piece of terrain will be. If a mutual agreement cannot be found, call for a judge to get an official ruling. Such a ruling is considered final, and cannot be contested once the game has begun. Each table will have four pieces of terrain, minimum, and will have at least one each of: Forest, Hill, Linear Obstacle 1.4 Prize Support and Sponsorship All prizes and awards packages are provided through the generosity of the NOVA Open’s partners, sponsors and vendors.
