Aurora Borealis The City of Tromso is situated in the middle of the auroral oval, the area with the highest probability of seeing the northern lights. The bright dancing lights of the aurora are actually collisions between electrically charged particles from the sun that enter the earth's atmosphere. These lights are seen above the magnetic poles of the northern hemisphere and are known as 'Aurora borealis' November and december are some of the best months to witness this beautiful phenomenon in Tromso. We are very lucky in the fact that we are able to see them right off the boat -sometmes on more than one occasion during our tour! If you would like to add on a Northern Lights Adventure Tour let us know and we can arrange this for you. \
Reindeer Experience Join the Sami for an unforgettable reindeer experience. The reindeer and the Sami have been living and working on this land for centuries and have only recently invited guests to be part of their life. The Reindeer Camp is located a 30-minute drive from Tromsø city centre and here you can feed the herd of around 200 reindeer who will swarm all around and even eat from your hands. You will then actually be invited to go on a short sled ride (weather permitting). The reindeer live wild for most of the year and are at the camp for a few months over winter to protect them from predators and harsh conditions. Warm drinks and a traditional Sami meal will be cooked over the fire and then served. Afterwards you are invited into a lavvo (Sami tent) to gather round the fire and listen to stories about Sami culture, life as a reindeer herder and a joik (traditional Sami song).
Husky Dog Sledding Dog sledding is a tradition of travel in the Arctic. The dog sledding consist of a musher, a sled and Alaskan huskies. It´s an adventurous activity for your Arctic holiday in Tromsø. We love doing this and want to share the amazing feeling of leading a dog sled with happy and strong Alaskan huskies. At the kennel you´ll get suits and all the equipment you need. Now the fun begins! The guide will tell you about our huskies, show you how to use the sled and work with the dogs. Then we enter the sleds and slide into the highlands. Our guide will lead you and find the best track through the snow-covered landscape of Kvaløya.Sami lavvo. After the tour you gather around a fire and will be served chocolate cake, coffee and tea. This is the cozy and relaxing part when you can share your moments from the tour. Please note that if the snow conditions are not right for husky sledding on the day of your tour, you will do a husky hike instead.
The Orca of the Norway Fjords are known as "Type 1 Orca" They come to the area to follow the herring run. These North About The Atlantic Orca are a resident orca and congregate in big pods of 30-60 whales to hunt the herring using an incredible “carousell” method of hunting. The predators work together to break away Orcas a group of herring into a smaller, more manageable “ball”. They encircle the herded herring, chasing the fish tighter together and upwards. At the water's surface, herring try to escape by leaping into the air, creating a “boiling” effect. But the six-tonne orcas slap down their powerful tails, sending a shock wave that stuns their underwater prey. They then easily pick off the immobilised fish, leaving the water glistening with scales. We may also see Humpback and even Finn whales "Barge in on the Orcas" There have been several observations of orcas herding herring to a tight school towards the surface and just as they start feeding the humpback and Fin whales come and ‘take over’ the herring schools. Humpbacks have their own astonishing and unique way of catching fish or krill. They create “bubble nets” where a single whale or a group blow a ring of bubbles out of their blowholes, encircling their prey. The whales will swim through their bubble net with their vast mouths open, scooping up their catch. We hope to see all these incredible behaviours plus much much more on this amazing tour!
Swimming with Orcas has been around for over 20 years Swimming however only recently has it become more well known and available to more tourists to experience for themselves. with Orcas! The way it works is that once we find a pod of Orca we pop on our fashionable drysuits, hop into our smaller tender and get nice and close while we assess what the whales are doing. If they seem chilled and in a sociable mood we slip into the water quietly and wait for them to come to us, which for a dolphin (Orcas are the largest of the dolphin family) -a human in the water its almost impossible to resist! Then we can lie on the surface and watch the orcas glide by and around us- or for the more adventurous go ahead and freedive with them! Nothing is more humbling than sharing the underwater world with these highly intelligent, highly social mammals who grow up to 10m in length and up to 6 tonnes!! The experience will leave you in awe and with an even greater love and understanding
How cold will the water temperature be? How Cold will the air temp and water temp FREQUENTLY be? Water temperature is about 4 degrees. ASKED Air temperature from -7°C up to +7° C. QUESTIONS Can I see the Northern Lights on the live aboard? It's a naturally occuring event so obviously we can never 100% promise, but it is the area with the highest probability of seeing the northern lights in the world. So yes a very good chance. Where do I need to fly into? Most guests fly into Oslo-Gardermoen (OSL) in Norway Alternatively you can fly to Stockholm Arlanda Airport (ARN) in Sweden and then a direct flight to Tromsø Who can do this tour? Ideally someone who is confident snorkelling in open waters. There will be certified guides that are there to help you along the way should you feel nervous. Someone also agile enough with the ability to get in and out of a dinghy/tender throughout your time on the boat and putting on a drysuit which is more tricky to squeeze into than a wetsuit
Anyone who is feeling extra brave (or crazy) can try the famous arctic dip!

Will I need to hire a dry suit to wear in the water? Yes - the hire of your dry suits are all taken care of and are a part of your packaged price Will I see feeding humpbacks at this time of year? There is a very good chance that while swiming with Orcas fedding on Herrign you will also encounter the North Pacific Humpback Whales lunge feeding on the herring bait balls!
