CHAT AND HAPPENINGS March 2018 Executive Director’s Column I can’t believe we are rolling into March already. Soon the spring flowers will be starting to bloom. With the nicer weather coming residents will want to be outside for walks and relaxing out on the benches. Please be mindful to let the desk know that you are stepping out, as we like to make sure all residents are accounted for in the event of an emergency. In light of recent events on the news, we as an organization took a close look at how we monitor the security of our buildings. We are excited to say that we do a great job! There are some areas in which we could tighten this up. Some residents have family members that visit and may come into the building at a door closest to their loved ones apartment. We ask that ALL visitors come through the main door. It is our policy and a state regulation that all visitors sign in when they enter the building. As residents you have the ability to come and go from any door in the building. We ask that you be mindful not to let others in when exiting or entering the building. Although we might know who they are, it is important that we continue to follow our policy and regulations by having ALL visitors come through the main lobby and sign in. To follow up on my last post… we have ordered new boards for the laundry rooms. Once they have arrived we will neatly transfer everyone’s days and times over to the new ones. If we have any questions, we will certainly be in touch. Last and most important… our annual Resident Engagement Survey will be coming out shortly for you to complete. This is very important as it helps us gage what we are doing well and what areas our residents feel we need to improve upon. The last few years, we have not met at least 90% participation. Not only do I want to meet 90% percent participation, but I want to meet 100%. Never have we reached 100%. Let this year be our year!!! This sur vey is str ictly confidential. I encourage you to ask for help if you need it. We can have a volunteer come in to help you complete it. I have a full agenda for our next Town Hall meeting on March 8, 2018. I will also have a little visitor coming to visit. Warmly, Jessica Stewart, Executive Director

CHAPLAIN’S CORNER “The Lord is gracious and merciful.” Psalm 111:4b Holy Week is around the corner. This is especially the week that we remember the suffering of our Savior, Jesus Christ, on the way to the cross of Calvary. There at the end, Jesus said, “Father, forgive them for they know not what they do.” I wonder how well we are at forgiving. Jesus gives the perfect example on the cross even after so much he endured. Can we follow Jesus enough to be forgiving people, day in and day out? Sometimes it is hard. Yet, nothing we have endured is unfamiliar to God. What do we need to do to practice forgiveness more perfectly? Let’s consider forgiveness this March as we prepare for the celebration of Easter and Christ’s resurrection. There are two aspects of forgiveness you may be dealing with at this time. Self-forgiveness: “I hate what I’ve done. My guilt still haunts me.” “Forgive” in Greek means to “let go, give up, cancel, pardon.” Consider talking with God about what you’ve done, and the burden it alys on your heart Let the weight of your guilt go, and accept God’s love and mercy. When restitution is needed, pray about how to say “sorry”. What does your apology communicate? There are better ways to say sorry. Is it expressing regret, accepting responsibility, genuinely repenting, requesting forgiveness? If so, maybe these words apply: I’m sorry for…, This is wrong because…, In the future, I will…, Will you forgive me? Forgiving others: “I have continued to live with the consequence of the painful injury inflicted on me from another. It is unforgivable.” There are unforgiveable actions, but not unforgiveable people. Jesus teaches us this on the cross. Trite words can’t free you form the energy that anger, bitterness and hatred carry. The way to peace is a process of giving this pain to God. There is no easy road to this freedom. Consider talking or writing about it without sending the letter. It is possible to forgive and be light hearted again. Imagine finding yourself happy again. Forgiving others is one way to your own happiness. If you need someone to talk with, find someone you can trust. The chaplain/volunteer chaplains, your pastor, a social worker, a therapist...let us know if we can help. Easter is coming. March Chapel Preachers: March 7th Rev.
