But then we found ourselves losing to a promotion-chasing team in the previous game at The Acretweed Stadium. By narrowly missing out to Cheshunt 2-1 and then losing 1-0 to Chalfont St Peter, we capped a disappointing run of losses, in which in fairness we deserved more out of the games; we created enough chances to win both – but equally did not do enough to not concede. “ The togetherness of the squad was clear to snatch the winning goal, giving us two very good successive away results. to see and it was a So we went in to the Westfield game with confidence after those two away victories, but with a few changes needing to be made, big turning point ” unfortunately the game did not live up to our expectations. It was at best a scrappy game from both teams, and Westfield took the lead With a couple new additions and a change right on the brink of the half-time interval. We in system we went away to play-off chasing rallied after the break and equalised through Waltham Abbey and with a depleted squad Trey Charles, and at that point it seemed that of only 13 players, put a performance in to be we would go on to take something from the proud of; the togetherness of the squad was match. So to walk off at the end 3-1 losers on clear to see, and it was a big turning point. the day was a shame, but it must be said that our performance over the 90 minutes was not We followed that with a trip to Ware, who were good enough. in very good form; with a full squad and with new additions we took the play to them from To close, I’d like to somewhat belatedly the off. It showed and we had a 2-0 lead at half- welcome Trey Charles and Yahya El-Khabouche time and in control. When we came out for the to the club; I’m sure they will both prove to be second half, we should have put the game to assets for us. bed, but to Ware’s credit, their pressure led to Thanks for your great support of the team as them clawing back the two goals. NORTHWOOD 1 WOODS REWIND WESTFIELD 3 SATURDAY 26TH JANUARY 2019 | BOSTIK LEAGUE | THE ACRETWEED STADIUM PICTURES: JAMES BROWN WORDS: ROBIN PIPER 20 Northwood v Hayes & Yeading United | Tuesday 5th February 2019
MATCH REPORT N orthwood’s poor home form continued as they slipped to a third straight defeat at The Acretweed against play-off chasing Westfield. The visitors enjoyed the better of the early exchanges as they forced a couple of corners, with keeper Luke Sheldrick called upon to deny Greg Hayden and Dale Burnham. However, as the game neared the half-hour mark Woods began to grow into the contest and worked themselves into a couple of useful positions, with Chris Gosling firing wide when well placed. Westfield maintained their attacking impetus with Kozakis once again drawing a save from Sheldrick while the speedy duo of Tinashe Nkoma and Dylan Casco were a constant threat. At the other end, Dan Pett created a couple of openings for the hosts as his cross was headed wide by Lucan before a clever through-ball found Jabir Laraba who was unable to get sufficient purchase on his shot. But Northwood’s fallibility at defending corners was in evidence again as they conceded on the stroke of half- time, Greg Hayden forcing the ball home to give Westfield the lead in stoppage time. Woods came out strongly after the break with Lucan not far away with a 25-yard effort, before Imran Uche saw his header tipped over by keeper Gary Ross following Gosling’s driven free- kick. And Gosling was the creator once more as his corner found Uche, who had his shot cleared off the line while Tremayne Charles went close with a long-range free-kick. Northwood who deservedly drew level on 58 minutes through Tremayne Charles with his first goal for the club as he applied the finish to a slick move involving Miguel Matos and Gosling. Northwood went close to taking the lead as Charles turned provider as he set up Uche whose shot on the turn was saved by Ross. And the visitors responded with another quick counter-attack which saw Sheldrick produce a point-blank save to deny Cascoe. But the Woods custodian was left helpless as Cascoe’s low cross found substitute Aaron Watson, who converted with ease to restore Westfield’s lead on 64 minutes. The Woods had the stuffing knocked out of them Northwood: Luke Sheldrick, Dan Newton, Miguel Matos, as Nkoma latched onto a through-ball before Kieran Asumadu-Sakyi (Leigh Stevens 71m), Imran Uche, delivering an emphatic finish into the far corner Jon Munday, Dan Pett, Chris Gosling, Kweku Lucan (Kyran to extend the visitor’s lead with eight minutes Worrell 74m), Jabir Laraba (Andrew Ofosu 68m), Tremayne left on the clock. Northwood continued to press Charles for some consolation, with Worrell having a Westfield: Gary Ross, Jack Dean, Julius Mngadi, Arsen shot saved before Pett stabbed a shot wide. But Ujkaj, Gregory Hayden, Dale Burnham, Tinashe Nkoma, it wasn’t to be for the Woods, who were left to Louie Downey (Harry Carter 72m), Antonios Kozakis reflect on another defeat at The Acretweed as (Graeme Purdy 46m), George Frith (Aaron Watson 63m), Dylan Cascoe the curtain came down on a topsy-turvy January. twitter.com/NorthwoodFC | www.northwoodfc.com 21

He had gone close himself on a couple of occasions before providing the cross which was tucked away by Hugo Figueiredo after 40 minutes. Northwood continued to look effective after the break and when Staines goalkeeper Louis Wells failed to hold a stinging strike from Gordon, Kyle Matthews was quick to convert from the loose ball for an equaliser on 58 minutes.
