6 Wednesday, October 3, 2018 We’re going on a bargain hunt A Rangiora couple has taken DIY to a new level, kitting out their family home with finds from auctions, op shops and demolition yards, writes Sue Allison. J ecasta and Patrick South had renovated a few houses over the years but, after losing their Brighton home in the quakes and moving out to Rangiora, it was time to design and build from scratch. Their first quest was to find a worthy site. ‘‘We didn’t want to live in a subdivision because of all the covenants,’’ says Jecasta. After scouring the district for ‘‘green spaces’’, they bought the back section of a property that was in two titles. ‘‘This way we got to move into a nice established street with a beautiful garden.’’ Patrick’s background is in sales and marketing, but he had taken a job with a building company to add to his practical skill set. Jecasta is a seasoned upcycler with an eye for design and a nose for a deal. Together they made a formidable team. Patrick drew up the plans for a four, potentially five-bedroom abode to house their children, daughters Onika, 21, and Larkin, 11, and sons Jak, 16, and Mika, 8, as well as Dougal the dog and tabby-cat Muffin. It features a central open-plan kitchen/living area with the master bedroom at one end and children’s bedrooms plus a ‘‘kids’ lounge’’ at the other. Bifolding glass doors lead from the living spaces to a deep deck which wraps around the sunny side of the house. The energy- efficient home has solar panels on the roof and a clean-burning woodburner with wetback. ‘‘We spent a lot of time sourcing the materials. It was our full-time job for a while,’’ says Jecasta. ‘‘You can save such big money. We seldom pay retail for anything.’’ They were regulars at Smiths Auctions, with building supplies under the hammer on Wednesdays and household goods on Fridays. They also scoured demolition yards and op shops and spent many an evening on-screen poring over Trade Me. Garnered materials, from A basket wall timber and tiles to fittings and furnishings, were echoes the stored in containers on-site while they lived in a home's rented cottage nearby. earthy vibe. Patrick took time out from paid work for the build, only calling in the experts when needed or to

Handy family members, friends and workmates added their expertise. Jecasta’s father laid most of the floor, their brother-in-law helped stand the frame and the electrician was a family friend. ‘‘We were hands-on as much as we could be and taught ourselves as we went along. ‘‘Pat learnt to tile watching YouTube,’’ says Jecasta, who along the way upcycled furniture both for the house and to generate some income. Six months after buying the section, and with one bathroom plumbed, the family moved in and continued the build from within. ‘‘It was a bit of a jigsaw. We had a rough vision but modified it as we went along to fit our things in.’’ Finds to be accommodated in the kitchen included an island out of a high-school science lab, an industrial cabinet spotted in a salvage yard and a pantry door from a Nelson butchery. One of their best Trade Me scores was a large stainless-steel TURN TO PAGE 8

While their taste is eclectic, the Souths have a penchant for mid-century modern pieces and Jecasta singles out the $200 leather-and-wood sofa and two armchairs as one of their best buys. ‘‘We’re both avid collectors and I love treasure hunting,’’ she says, adding that their favourite artwork was unearthed closer to home. The eye- catching black-and-white line painting by Patrick’s aunt, celebrated author Keri Hulme, was found languishing in a family garage. 14 Wednesday, October 3, 2018 Catherine Foster profiles an award-winning Lyttelton home, where new does not equal bland. A ward-winning architecture is not generally known for repurposing materials, but the owner and designer of the winner of the small house category in the 2017 National Architectural Designer Awards, Pippin Wright-Stow, sees his two years of scavenging post-earthquake Christchurch as Landing ‘‘embedded right into the core of the concept’’. Discovering new uses for his finds wasn’t the only reason for designing the house he did, but they certainly played a significant role. ‘‘Over the years, I had carried home what seemed like half of Christchurch Women’s Hospital and a whole lot more besides, and the key elements of these finds were incorporated into the fabric of lightly the design — from concept drawing through to 3D modelling… they were just too good not to use.’’ The structure itself, for all its idiosyncratic use of repurposed materials, bears little relation to the make-do-and- mend ethos of recycling. Conceived in collaboration with Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology, it is in fact a cutting-edge prototype of a modular framing system designed to quickly accommodate the many businesses displaced by the earthquakes. Christened Boxus, it works by configuring structurally isolated steel-framed 2.9m2 cubes into almost limitless configurations. Wright-Stow decided to adapt the system for residential purposes and build the prototype of that as a home for himself, his partner Erica, and his fast-expanding family. He imagined that the modular framing system that made the design so flexible would also allow for a fast build — one that would quickly house them, while simultaneously providing impetus to develop the Boxus concept further. But he had not reckoned with the complications of building in post-earthquake Christchurch, and progress was in fact tortuously slow. Stringent geo-tech requirements, delays in the building-consent process, a lack of skilled labour and restricted access all contributed to a long delay before work even started. Although the stringent requirements of the Building Code required all structural elements — foundations, framing, cladding — to be new (and thus quantifiable in terms of strength and durability), the newness of these components does not translate into blandness. Externally, the form is simplicity itself, and with its skillion roof and walls made of corrugated iron and translucent polycarbonate cladding clearly demonstrating its tightly constrained budget, it appears at first glance little more than a staunch little box perched on an interesting cat’s- cradle of highly visible foundations. Right now is the best time to Peter Worsp get your outdoor area up to Gardening speed; it’s so much easier than a desperate blitz immediately before people arrive. Be sure to start with the basics and leave the pretty bits until the end as finishing touches. Most outdoor entertaining areas have paving, which is easily rejuvenated with water-blasting. At the same time I’d give the outdoor furniture a blast, followed by a coat of furniture oil for anything wooden. Black stain makes half barrels look ultra-smart, particularly if they’re mass-planted in white. A wire brush on terracotta pots and soapy water on glazed pots works wonders. Some pre-planning is required to make sure the lawn is weed-free and the garden filled with plants (bare soil is high maintenance and prone to weeds). Then all that’s needed is to mow the lawn and cut the edges a day or two before. After the dirty work’s done, add the colour with plants.
