DAY 1 Sunday 10 May, 2020 MELBOURNE TO ALBURY Welcome to our 8 day tour to Orange and The Central Tablelands. After personal pickups from home, we join our deluxe O’Shannessy’s Quality Tours coach and crew to start our journey north. We stop along the way for our morning break and lunch in Benalla. Street art and silos are drawing crowds to small country towns in Victoria and after lunch, we drive around Benalla taking in some of the Street Art – artists from around the world were brought together to paint murals on bare walls, some over three stories high. Not far from here is our first silo - the Goorambat Silo – featuring the endangered Barking Owl. Whilst in Goorambat we will also see the impressive “Sophia” mural in the Uniting Church. In Devenish, we’ll be amazed at Cam Scale’s artwork of a First World War nurse and a modern-day combat medic. In St James you will notice a large mural of Sir George Coles, the founder of Coles Supermarkets and the town has a plaque showing where his first business was located. Our last stop today is in Tungamah to see brolgas and a kookaburra. Each silo has a different artist and a different story! We continue on to Albury for our first night’s accommodation. OVERNIGHT: Western Plus Hovell Tree, ALBURY DAY 2 Monday 11th May, 2020 ALBURY TO ORANGE Following our cooked breakfast, we are on our way again, continuing north. We pass through Holbrook to Gundagai where we stop for morning tea from the coach. Our lunch today is in Corowa, known for its annual ‘Running of the Sheep’ during the Woolfest, then we head to Orange. Unpack and settle in as we’re here for five nights. OVERNIGHT: Quality Inn Ambassador, ORANGE
DAY 3 Tuesday 12th May, 2020 EXPLORING ORANGE This morning, we are joined by a local expert who will introduce us to the town including Cook Park and the Botanic Gardens with its impressive native and exotic plant collection on a 17 hectare site. Just a few kilometres away is the small village of Lucknow. The town had a ‘gold strike’ in the 1850’s and the goldrush continued for over 100 years. We have lunch at the Two Fat Ladies Café and Lolly Shop – yum, all the lovely lollies in the shop! We have time to pop into the Lucknow Skin Shop and Boot Barn, a family run business with their history in sheepskin spanning three generations. This afternoon we have arranged a visit to wonderful Fourjay Farm which specialises in the production of Hazelnuts. We’ll meet the owners for a talk and a tour of the orchard followed by a delicious afternoon tea. OVERNIGHT: Quality Inn Ambassador, ORANGE DAY 4 Wednesday 13th May, 2020 MANILDRA & FORBES This morning, we drive to Manildra. Here we visit the art deco Amusu Theatre opened in 1936 by Allan Tom and has been operated by the same family since. We’ll enjoy a couple of ‘golden oldie’ short movies here and a trip down memory lane! Next door is the new and developing Poster Museum where we can take a look through the hundreds of original movie posters – all for sale! From Manildra, we head to Forbes, arriving at McFeeters Vintage Car Museum and see the vast collection of meticulously restored motor cars ranging from rare veterans to custom cars that are just down right bizarre! We have time to look around before our lunch in the Café within the museum. This evening, we’re in for a real treat as we don our tartan and head to Bathurst and Abercrombie House one of the finest historical mansions in Australia. Tonight we enjoy our ‘Scotland the Brave’ dinner! Pre-dinner drinks in the Drawing Room and dinner in the Ballroom with Scottish entertainment and perhaps even a haggis! OVERNIGHT: Quality Inn Ambassador, ORANGE
DAY 5 Thursday 14th May, 2020 MILLTHORPE & CANOWINDRA We have some free time to explore the main street of Orange this morning; some of us may like to visit Orange Regional Museum, the collection and exhibitions tells stories about Orange and the region, its history, people and places. We head off to Millthorpe to visit the Golden Memories Museum. Millthorpe was known as Spring Grove until 1884 and still retains all of its charm of yesteryear. The museum has a fascinating history of pioneering days, gold discovery and mining displays and a huge collection of farm machinery. We’ll have lunch here before we head to Canowindra. Situated on the Lachlan River, the town’s curving main street has a number of interesting old buildings dating back to the 1800s. We’ll visit the Age of Fishes Museum home to some very rare and important fossils before heading back to Orange. We arrive back at the motel in time to freshen up before dinner. OVERNIGHT: Quality Inn Ambassador, ORANGE DAY 6 Friday 15th May, 2020 DUBBO A wonderful day has been planned so after breakfast we make our way to Dubbo. Look out for the “animals on bikes” during our travels before we get to see animals alive! Our main visit today is to the Taronga Western Plains Zoo. We have plenty of time here as it is home to more than 1,100 animals from around the world, many of them endangered species. A zoo keeper will escort our coach and explain the open range layout and some of the behind the scenes operations. We enjoy our lunch at the zoo before we make our way to Dundullimal Homestead for a tour and afternoon tea. Wealthy Squatter John Maughan built Dundullimal in the 1840’s as the head station of his 1600 acre sheep run. Maughan sold the property in 1858, and it was subsequently occupied by three prominent Dubbo families. The slab house and stone stables that remain bear testimony to the hardships and conditions of colonial life on the land. After an interesting day we return to our accommodation with time to freshen up before dinner. OVERNIGHT: Quality Inn Ambassador, ORANGE
DAY 7 Saturday 16th May, 2020 ORANGE TO WAGGA WAGGA We say farewell to our hosts this morning and drive via Cowra to Greenthorpe. Near here, is one of the great historical sites in Australia – Iandra Castle. This impressive property was established by George Henry Greene from 1878-1911. All the grandeur of yesteryear remains at Iandra, with the faithful restoration of the homestead by David Morris through the 1970’s. We now start to make our way to Wagga Wagga for our final night’s accommodation, stopping in Young for our lunch. OVERNIGHT: International Hotel, WAGGA WAGGA DAY 8 Sunday 17th May, 2020 WAGGA WAGGA TO MELBOURNE We make our way to Albury this morning, stopping for morning tea from the coach at the Botanical Gardens.
