FEATURE Five Easy Wordplay Song Transitions Any DJ Can Do By Staci Nichols T here is no need to be intimidated by wordplay segues! While, yes, you can use pre-made wordplay transitions from your DJ pool (like “Yeah/One Dance” DJ Couture CLICK HERE to access Staci’s demo track of these transitions at noted reference times Wordplay Segue/Clean/Short available from Direct Music drop point in “Hey Ya” and play the Taylor loop, slowly filtering it in, Service), you can definitely perform them live even with until Andre 3000 says, “Now all the Beyonces...” beginner level beatmatching skills. They simply require #3: “BOOM BOOM POW” (BLACK EYED PEAS) INTO “SUPER a few minutes of prep time at home to set cue points & BASS” (NICKI MINAJ) - 1:36.4 practice before performing live. The wordplay segue is What's the sound of some rockin' super bass? Boom! Yep, you got one of my favorite song transitions, and I usually do a it. Here we will overlap both songs repeating the word “boom.” handful of them in every set I perform. Like Eve says in the Match up the last chorus of “Boom Boom Pow” (130 bpm) to the first song on our list, “Love for my wordplay—that's hard first chorus of Super Bass (127 bpm – “Can't you hear that boom, ba-doom, boom, boom, ba-doom, boom, bass. He got that super to find.” Well, here are five ways to make wordplay easy! bass. Boom, ba-doom, boom, boom, ba-doom, boom, bass.”) No #1: “LET ME BLOW YA MIND” (EVE, GWEN STEFANI) need to loop either song as both repeat “boom” for 2 phrases/8 bars INTO “DESPACITO - REMIX” (JUSTIN BIEBER, LUIS FONSI, (Nicki actually gives you a third phrase of “booms.”) For those of you who spin a lot of Latin like I do, you can also use “Scooby Doo Pa Pa” DADDY YANKEE) - 0:00 by DJ Kass and Pitbull for a “boom” wordplay transition. By this time, most non-Spanish speakers have learned that “despacito” means slowly (and “suavemente” means softly). Gwen #4: “JUMPIN' JUMPIN'” (DESTINY'S CHILD) INTO “JUMP Stefani's promise “I'm gonna take my time” in the chorus of “Let AROUND” (HOUSE OF PAIN) - 2:09 Me Blow Ya Mind” is the perfect hand-off to a whole song about Not only do these songs match up in tempo and wording, but they taking your time! “Let Me Blow Ya Mind” weighs in at 90 bpm. For are both ‘90s hip hop classics! For this transition, I use the short this transition, I use the Miguel Soria Remix of the Justin Bieber version of the Devine Canine Remix for “Jumpin' Jumpin'” (100 bpm) version of “Despacito,” which clocks at 95 bpm. The Miguel Soria available from BPM Supreme with the original version of Jump version features a repeated echo of the word “despacito” starting Around (107 bpm). At 1:16.4 in this version of “Jumpin' Jumpin,'” a at the fifth bar (or second phrase) with the verse starting at the 9th breakdown starts of Destiny's Child repeating the words “jumpin' bar (or third phrase). To perform this transition, I simultaneously hit jumpin'.” There I drop a 4-beat loop of the words “jump around” from an 8-bar loop of “I'm gonna take my time” in the second chorus of House of Pain's first chorus. You can drop the “jump around” loop Let Me Blow Ya Mind and drop the Miguel Soria remix at the first fairly loudly here. It also works to drop “Jump Around” without a downbeat. With each repetition of the “I'm gonna take my time” loop, if you prefer. I know some DJs use Kris Kross' “Jump” (102 bpm) loop, I drop the volume a bit so it's completely faded out by the first to wordplay with “Jump Around” as well. verse of Despacito. Easy peasy! #5: “BODAK YELLOW” (CARDI B) INTO “MONEY” (CARDI #2: “HEY YA” (OUTKAST) INTO “SHAKE IT OFF” (TAYLOR B) - 2:40 SWIFT) - 0:52 My favorite part of “Bodak Yellow” is definitely when Cardi says, “I There aren't a ton of bangers around the 160/80 bpm range, so to don't dance now, I make money moves.” And it's the perfect segue find two that you can combine with an easy wordplay is a gem. to her song “Money.” I recommend using any of the “Bodak Yellow” “Shake It Off” weighs in at 160/80 bpm, and “Hey Ya” is 159 bpm. remixes around 125/126 bpm and the Fry Ups Remix of “Money” For this transition, we will overlap Andre 3000 repeating “shake it” (available from Digital DJ Pool), which weighs in at 125 BPM. On the in the ending of “Hey Ya” with an 8-bar loop from the first chorus of last chorus of “Bodak Yellow,” set an 8-bar loop of her saying, “I don't “Shake It Off” where she says “I'm just gonna shake, shake, shake, dance now, I make money moves.” Drop that over the intro of the shake, shake. I shake it off. I shake it off. Woo hoo hoo.” Mark your Fry Ups version of “Money,” in which the word “money” is repeated for the first 4 phrases until the verse starts. DJ Staci, the Track Star, has been a full-time mobile DJ for 10 years. She has performed As you've probably noticed, to find new wordplay segues, you internationally, on the Vegas strip, at festivals, want to look for songs that repeat a single word or simple phrase celebrity weddings, and for companies like over and over—especially where a bit of an echo or filter is involved. AR : At the time we wrote “Blink Of An Eye”, there were a few father-daughter songs on the radio, with Heartland’s "I Loved Her First," Tim McGraw’s "My Little Girl" and "Butterfly Kisses" by Bob Carlisle. I always felt uncomfortable playing "My Little Girl" at weddings when the song lyrics went “Between you and me, he won’t be good enough.” It was always an awkward moment on the groom's side. I’d always feel bad for him. I wanted a song that wouldn’t create that uncomfortable feeling. We wrote “Blink Of An Eye” with a local band called Ten Cent Biscuit. Mike Archer and Barry Brown, who both have kids, were members of the band and they wrote the music. All three of us contributed to the lyrics. I told them about some patter I would do when I played weddings and introduced the father-daughter dance; I wanted to take that patter and turn it into a song. I would tell the dad: “ [ Dad’s name ], it seems like yesterday, you were holding [ daughters name ] in your arms for the first time. Then, you blink your eyes and you're taking those first days of school pictures with her new backpack. You blink your eyes again and you're the parent of a teenager. Pretty soon, you're handing her the keys to the car, then planning a graduation party and now today, you gave this beautiful woman away. What a very special moment in a man's life. Congratulations! Here's your father-daughter song...” and then we’d play whatever song they picked. As you can tell by the lyrics, it pretty much says it as it is. It really is amazing how fast kids grow up. MC : Were there any musicians that inspired you while writing the song? When Minnesota wedding DJ Alan Raygor was planning his own father-daughter dance, instead of choosing a well-known AR : Not really.
