Sarah Seng, Clarinet Clarinetist Sarah Seng is a native of Richfield, UT. A senior music education major at SUU, Sarah serves as section leader and principal clarinet of the SUU Wind Symphony and University Orchestra. As a member of the SUU Clarinet Quartet, Sarah has performed at Woodwind Day and the 2022 International Clarinet Association Conference in Reno, NV. Her performances have been featured on social media by Vandoren USA and the ICA. She has also performed in masterclasses for Dr. Charles West (Virginia Commonwealth University) and Dr. Jeremy Reynolds (University of Denver). Sarah has taught both Clarinet and Piano within Cedar City and hopes to one day have her own private studio. Her teachers include Jarom Coleman, Laura Grantier, and Aubrey Shirts. Sheldon Stevens, Percussionist (Marimba) Percussionist Sheldon Stevens is captivated by how percussion can connect with a live audience. Surrounded by music from a young age in Clinton, Utah, Sheldon began playing piano and saw how music could translate joy to those listening. After seeing The Blue Man Group perform at age 11 he became inspired to delve into the world of percussion, leading to a major connection with marimba in high school. As a sophomore at Southern Utah University studying Music Performance, Sheldon has continued to pursue his love for performing and has cultivated a performance energy that draws audiences into his musical world. He regularly performs with the Southern Utah University Percussion Ensemble, Wind Symphony, Symphony Orchestra and choirs. He has performed with Marie Osmond, the pit orchestra for Pajama Game, the Satellite Salon Series and the Orchestra of Southern Utah. He has also been featured at the Utah Day of Percussion Showcase concert with Southern Utah University. In competition Sheldon placed 3rd in marimba solo performance, 2nd in college timpani solo and 3rd in Mock auditions at the Utah state Day of Percussion in 2021. Outside of his classical training, Sheldon is the touring drummer for the punk band Marji Mozart, with performances at festivals and venues in Utah and Arizona. His teachers include Keith Sorenson, Tony Thackeray and Dr. Lynn Vartan. Wesley Buckwalter, Tenor Wesley has been singing from the time he was an eight-year-old alto in the American Fork Children’s Choir to today, a senior studying choral music education at SUU. As choir president of the SUU Concert Choir and as a Theory/Aural Skills tutor, Wesley is beginning to fulfill his dreams of teaching music technique and music theory. Wesley has always wanted to be a teacher, and found SUU rather accidentally as a result of marrying Cedar City local, Emily Hopkins Buckwalter. With her, the couple have two kids, a four-year-old son Wilson, and a one-year-old son named Owen. Wesley has always loved the choral environment, but in coming to Southern Utah University, Wesley has also discovered a love for music theory. He dreams of one day acquiring a P.H.D. and teaching music theory principles at University. He has also discovered a love for the solo voice. As he puts it, “I had no idea my voice would develop the way it has, and that I would be capable of a professional sound. I was convinced that my voice would always sound good as a member of a choir, but if you’d have told me that my voice alone would be selected as a feature for a University level orchestra, I would have laughed in disbelief.” Puccini’s Aria, Che Gelida, among other works, will be featured at Wesley’s Senior Recital on November 30th, 7:30pm in Thorley Music Recital Hall.
Zach Mercer, Horn Zach Mercer is a Senior, Music Education major at SUU. During his time here he has served as principal horn in both the Wind Symphony and the Symphony Orchestra, and he has also served as the senator for the College of Performing and Visual Arts. He has toured the country performing with the 20-time World Champion Blue Devils Drum and Bugle Corps, from Concord, California. Zach looks forward to a future in music education and performance, where he can enrich the lives of his students with the knowledge he has gained from his time here at SUU. He would like to thank Dr. Sun for this incredible opportunity, as well as Dr. Lambert and David Lintz for their guidance. Lastly, Zach would like to thank his family for their continued support of his music career. Zane Lowry, Composer/conductor Zane R. Lowry started composing music at the age of 12. He soon developed a passion for orchestral composition, and has had many opportunities over the years to develop his skills through composer workshops, collaborative projects, and competitions. Within the past couple years, Zane has received recognition for his work. In 2021, he was selected as a finalist in the Berlin International Film Scoring Competition. In 2022, Zane won the Hal Campbell young Composers Competition with his piece Adventum, and most recently in October was selected as a finalist in the International Gil Soundtrack Award Competition, based in Murcia, Spain. Zane hopes to continue pursuing his passions of composition, music technology, and Music education as a career. As well as composing, Zane enjoys playing the violin and piano, being outdoors and spending time with his friends, family, and fiancé.
