Perennials for Sunny Spots Perennial plants that want more than 6 hours of sun a day All plants in this section are in 1-gallon pots unless noted otherwise Yarrow Achillea ‘Moonshine’ $12.00 For sunny, hot, dry sites, yarrow is a proven performer. Popular with butterflies and bees but not with deer, this yellow hybrid introduced in the 1950s features silvery foliage and gets almost three feet tall. Great for a cut or dried flower. Anise Hyssop Agastache 'Blue Fortune' $12.00 These 30” tall spires of blue flowers are popular with butterflies and bees. Thrift Armeria maritima ‘Bloodstone’ $12.00 Bright pom-poms float atop fine grassy foliage in mid-late spring. Salt tolerant, this is great plant for the edge of sidewalks and driveways or tucked into a rock garden. Wormwood Artemesia 'Silver Mound' $ 12.00 A low mounding, silvery foliage plant that looks great on the edge of a garden path. Does not need a lot of watering and is deer resistant. Swamp Milkweed Ascelpias incarnata $ 12.00 This native wetland perennial does well in moist soils and rain gardens. It is a host plant for Monarch butterfly caterpillars but attracts many other pollinators as well. It features a cluster of upturned deep pink flowers that bloom mid-summer. Butterfly Weed Asclepias tuberosa $ 12.00 Bright orange flowers attract all sorts of butterflies and of course it is a host plant for Monarch butterflies. The plant itself grows about 24” tall and is a rugged performer in the summer garden. May be late coming out in the spring. Aster Aster novae-angliae 'Purple Dome' $ 12.00 This tried and true aster is a great flower to have in the fall. This native cultivar is compact, growing only to 18” or so. False Indigo Baptisia australis $ 12.00 Blue spikes bloom in May and are a great transition bloomer in mid to late spring. Growing 3-4’ tall, this is a good plant for the middle or back of the flower bed and the leaves make a great back background for other plants. Tickseed Coreopsis ‘Gilded Lace’ $ 12.00 This naturally occurring hybrid of tickseed grows tall (4- 5’) and features mildew resistant lacy foliage. Tolerant of heat, humidity and drought. It can grow taller in richer soils so give it some room. Good for butterflies and bees. Threadleaf Coreopsis Coreopsis verticillata 'Moonbeam’ $ 12.00 Bright yellow flowers sprawl across the tops of soft, fine foliage and make a stunning show midsummer. This native grows to about 24” tall and is drought tolerant. Popular with all sorts of pollinators. Purple Coneflower Echinacea purpurea ‘Magnus’ $ 12.00 A North American native, coneflower is a great plant for attracting insects and birds to your garden. Growing 36” tall, it is topped with large purple daisy-like flowers in late summer. Spent flower heads will feed finches and other birds. Very adaptable to most situations as long as it gets plenty of sun. Fox Tail Lily Eucomis ‘African Night’ $ 12.00 A tropical looking plant hardy to the Winchester area. Joe-Pye Weed Eupatorium purpureum spp. maculatum ‘Gateway’ $ 12.00 This compact cultivar of the native perennial (4-6’ tall) features clusters of pink purplish flowers in late summer. It likes moist places and does well in flood plains and stream banks. It attracts a wide variety of pollinators including many swallowtail butterflies. Excellent for back of the garden border. Blanket Flower Gaillardia aristata 'Arizona Sun' $ 12.00 Masses of orange-red blooms cover this native cultivar each summer. Once established, little care and watering is needed, and it can be quite drought tolerant. Deer resistant and it attracts pollinators. Low mounding habit, growing to about 10” tall and wide. Willowleaf Sunflower Helianthus salicifolius 'Autumn Gold' $ 12.00 Narrow willow-like leaves form a compact mound that grows 24” high and wide. Yellow flowers bloom from September to frost, which makes it good companion for asters and mums in the garden. Drought tolerant and good for pollinators. Daylily Hemerocallis ‘Handwriting on the Wall’ $ 12.00 Daylilies are rugged performers in a full sun garden, handling most soil types and conditions. This cultivar features peach flowers with a wine purple center. Hibiscus Hibiscus ‘French Vanilla’ $ 12.00 Nothing says summer better than a large flowering hibiscus. This plant features large, 7” wide custard yellow flowers that cover the plant. While it projects a tropical vibe, this is a cultivar of a plant that is native from Canada to Florida and is hardy in the Winchester garden. The plant gets big (4’ tall and wide) so make sure to give it some room in your garden. Siberian Iris Iris ‘Butter and Sugar’ $ 12.00 This rugged iris features creamy white standards and butter-yellow falls that brighten any garden in the early summer. They perform well in average to moist soils but can tolerate moderately dry locations. Siberian Iris Iris 'Caesar's Brother' $ 10.00 One of the more versatile irises for the garden. Siberian irises can take moderately dry locations or do well in moister spots. They also are more shade tolerant than other irises. Caesar’s Brother has been around since the 1930s and has proven its worth for decades. Beautiful blue flowers. Shasta Daisy Leucanthemum superbum 'Becky' $ 12.00 A sturdy cultivar, this daisy produces loads of white flowers each summer. It stands tall at 36” but does not require staking to keep it up. Blazing Star Liatris spicata $ 12.00 This prairie native is one of the best plants for attracting pollinators. When the spikes are blooming in early to midsummer, expect to find them covered in butterflies. The purple spikes will stand 18-20” tall. Deer resistant. Maltese Cross Lychnis arkwrightii 'Orange Gnome' $ 12.00 It’s hard to miss this colorful plant in the garden, with brilliant orange flowers on purplish-green leaves. It blooms in early summer and the flowers can last for weeks. It tolerates a variety of soils as long as it gets plenty of sun. Catmint Nepeta faassenii 'Walker's Low' $ 12.00 Aromatic leaves and soft lavender-blue flowers make this a great plant to place along the edge of a path. Blooms through the summer and attracts all sorts of pollinators. Grows to about 24” tall. Does not need much water and is deer resistant. Switchgrass Panicum virgatum 'Shenandoah' $ 12.00 This cultivar of the native switchgrass has reddish stems. Grows 3-4’ tall, it makes a good accent plant in the garden without overpowering a space. Beardtongue Penstemon ‘Midnight Masquerade’ $ 12.00 Beardtongue is a solid performer in our garden with dramatic spikes of colorful flowers. This cultivar features dark foliage with lavender-purple flowers. It is not bothered by heat and humidity and is quite drought tolerant. Woodland Phlox Phlox divaricata ‘Blue Moon’ $ 12.00 This spring flowering phlox has bright fragrant lavender flowers in April/May. Staying compact, it will only grow 12-18” tall with glossy foliage staying about 6” tall. Foliage sprawls and plays well with other plants. Attracts butterflies and even hummingbirds. Creeping Phlox Phlox stolonifera 'Sherwood Purple' $ 12.00 A mat-forming creeping phlox with bright starlike flowers. An excellent ground cover staying about 6” tall and provides bright purple flowers for early season pollinators. Salvia Salvia 'Ballerina Pink' PP29957 $ 12.00 A pink flowering form of the hardy garden salvia, this plant produces 18” tall spikes of soft pink flowers. Pollinator friendly and deer resistant. Salvia Salvia nemerosa 'May Night' $ 12.00 A top landscape performer with dense spikes of violet- purple flowers. Blooms reach 18” tall in early summer. Stonecrop Sedum 'Autumn Joy' $ 12.00 This cultivar has a long track record of success in the garden. Upright stems support blooms of rose flower heads that age to a deep bronze each fall. It is quite drought tolerant. Stonecrop Sedum 'Dazzleberry' $ 10.00 This ground cover creates a log spreading mat of foliage perfect for covering sunny dry areas. The blue-gray foliage is attractive in its own right, but during late summer it is covered in vibrant raspberry-colored flowers it really gets attention. We grow it in front of the museum patio. Goldenrod Solidago rugosa ‘Fireworks’ $ 10.00 A native clump forming plant with radiating flower form covered in yellow blooms in late summer. It is a pollinator magnet attracting bees, butterflies and beetles. It performs well dry soils but can tolerate wetter situations if needed making it an excellent for a rain garden. Will gradually spread by creeping rhizomes. Woodland Pinkroot Spigelia marilandica 'Little Redhead' $ 12.00 This native is seldom seen in the home garden but is a showstopper for those that have it. Tubular red flowers in early summer will get your neighbors talking and attract hummingbirds. Ironweed Vernonia noveboracensis $ 12.00 This rugged perennial can get tall at 4’ feet or more. Purple blooms in late summer are perfect for butterflies and bees yet the deer don’t like it. It will take up some space in your garden but worth giving it the room. Yucca Yucca filimentosa 'Excalibur' $ 12.00 The spikes of gray-green leaves form a uniform clump of spikiness. Curly white filaments trail from the leaf edge. In mid-summer a spike of creamy white flowers rises above the foliage for a dramatic show. Perennials for Sunny and/or Shady Spots These perennials like full sun but also will grow well with only 4 hours of direct sun. Some grow well in more shade. All plants in this section are in 1-gallon pots unless noted otherwise Bugleweed Ajuga reptans 'Black Scallop' $ 12.00 A spreading groundcover with dark, almost black leaves. In late spring, spikes of blue flowers bloom but the dark foliage is the real feature through the summer and fall. It does well in full sun, but it does equally well in the shade of a tree. Allium Allium 'Medusa' $ 12.00 This ornamental onion features twisty, snaky leaves reminiscent of the Greek monster. This deer-resistant plant features clusters of round purple flowers each spring. Arkansas Blue Star Amsonia hubrichtii $ 12.00 This southern native is attractive in 3 seasons. Blue star- shaped flowers bloom in spring and the soft, finely textured leaves just beg to touched. In fall, the leaves turn a brilliant golden color for an added touch to the autumn garden. Deer resistant Anemone Anemone 'Honorine Jobert' $ 10.00 The tall single white flowers of these fall-blooming plants are a perfect addition to a cottage garden where a little shade is present. Columbine Aquilegia caerulea 'Kirigami' $ 12.00 These large flowering hybrids of an old-fashioned plant provide bright colors in the late spring garden. They do well in a little bit of shade and enjoy the spring sun. They do well as a cut flower. Wild Columbine Aquilegia canadensis $ 12.00 This native plant features red nodding flowers in late April and early May. A short-lived perennial, it will self- seed easily. Naturalizes in wooded/shady conditions. Deer resistant Goat’s Beard Aruncus ‘Misty Lace’ $ 12.00 A slightly smaller goat’s beard than many others, this hybrid will still reach about 3’ tall. Very tolerant of hot humid summers, this is a good selection for southern gardens. Great in mass plantings. Astilbe Astilbe 'Bridal Veil' $ 12.00 This is the classic white astilbe. Lacy panicles of bee- friendly white flowers bloom in early summer and get as tall as 28”. Can thrive in full sun or full shade so very adaptable to many growing conditions. Deer resistant. Pink Dianthus ‘Appleblossom Burst’ $ 12.00 Called pinks because the edge of the flower is cut, as if by pinking shears. These flowers bloom in later spring above a cushion of spiky leaves. Hardy Geranium Geranium maculatum $ 12.00 This hardy geranium does well in heat and humidity. Blue flowers hover about the sprawling plant, which makes a good ground cover. Continues to flower through the summer. Does well in full sun and prefers some afternoon shade. False Sunflower Heliopsis helianthoides 'Summer Sun' $ 12.00 An easy-to-care-for perennial, this plant features many bright gold flowers during the summer. This native is a good cut flower to bring in for arrangements. Very heat tolerant, they grow tall (36”) so do well in the back of a flower border. They thrive in sunny spots but tolerate some shade. Leopard Plant Ligularia 'Britt-Marie Crawford' $ 12.00 Dark, bold leaves make a statement in a mixed planting of flowers. In late summer, golden daisy-like flowers perch over the flowers making a 3’ tall showy display. Prefers partial shade. Deer resistant. Cardinal Flower Lobelia cardinalis $ 12.00 The late-summer spikes of red flowers of this native are a magnet for butterflies, bees, hummingbirds and even swallowtail birds. It does well in moist or boggy areas or just average soil. It does best in partial shade but tolerates full sun. Great Blue Lobelia Lobelia siphilitica $ 12.00 A wetland native with spikes of blue flowers that attract pollinators in late summer. Naturalizes well in moist sites but can tolerate drought and performs well in a garden flower bed. Plants will self-sow in the right conditions. Deer resistant. Bee Balm Monarda didyma ‘Jacob Cline’ $ 12.00 This native cultivar was selected for its superior resistance to mildew. Large red flowers are a magnet for pollinators and hummingbirds. Blooms from June to August and will get 3-4 feet tall when in flower. Likes full sun and moist conditions but is adaptable and will spread readily. Spotted Bee Balm Monarda punctata $ 12.00 This native features unusual flowers and it is a great addition to any native meadow or naturalistic planting. It grows 2-3’ tall and performs well in dry to average soils. This is a pollinator magnet and deer resistant. Golden Groundsel Packera aurea $ 12.00 An excellent groundcover for partly shaded areas. Shiny leaves grow low to the ground and in the spring 12” spikes of yellow flowers herald the warm weather. Peony Paeonia ‘Bartzella’ $ 35.00 This is an intersectional peony – a cross between a herbaceous peony and a tree peony, drawing on the best qualities of both species. Large flowers, long-lasting healthy foliage, strong stems that won’t bend in the rain and excellent winter hardiness. ‘Bartzella’ features numerous bright yellow flowers and can grow to 3’ tall and wide, with a light sweet fragrance. Creeping Raspberry Rubus calycinoides $ 12.00 A low growing groundcover that will creep across a garden bed or scramble around in a rock garden. Nearly evergreen, the leaves do bronze a little in winter. Prefers well drained soils. Likes sun but handles shade without a problem. Black-eyed Susan Rudbeckia fulgida 'Goldsturm' $ 12.00 This native black-eyed Susan is proven performer in the garden. Strong, long lasting golden flowers provide color all summer long. A great plant for pollinators. If you let the flowers go to seed, it will also attract many birds. Goldfinches cover ours each year. While it will tolerate some shade, it flowers best in full sun. Giant Coneflower Rudbeckia maxima $ 12.00 A tall perennial (grows 6-7’), this bright, erect plant with yellow ray flowers makes a statement in the garden. Blooms in mid summer. It likes average to moist soils and can spread more quickly in rich soils. Need less than 6 hours of direct sun a day All plants in this section are in 1-gallon pots unless noted otherwise Siberian Bugloss Brunnera macrophylla ‘Jack Frost’ $ 12.00 We get lots of comments and questions about this plant growing in the Water Garden and Jasmine allee. This cultivar features frosted green leaves and beautiful blue flowers in the spring. Grows 10” high and spreads out about 20” Turtlehead Chelone lyonii ‘Hot Lips’ $ 12.00 Pink turtlehead-shaped blooms cluster atop dark foliage on this stunning plant. This native blooms mid-to-late summer and is deer resistant. It grows 2-3’ tall and prefers moist soils, performing exceptionally well on moist stream banks or in marshy areas. Autumn Fern Dryopteris e. 'Brilliance' $ 12.00 The newly emerging fronds have a slight orange tint while the mature fronds are dark green. It grows 2’ tall and wide and is deer resistant. We have some in the Green Garden. Barrenwort Epimedium x rubrum $ 14.00 A slow spreading groundcover, the airy display of spring flowers leads you to underestimate how tough this plant is. Lenten Rose Helleborus ‘Pink in Paris’ $ 12.00 Blooming in late winter/early spring, Lenten roses are a welcome sign that spring is on its way. Numerous blossoms of single flowers on each plant provide a variety of colors. Good for naturalizing in shady areas, it will grow 18” tall and gradually spread. Deer resistant. We have many of these plants near the Spring House in Kathie’s Spring Garden at the MSV. Coral Bells Heuchera americana ‘Dale’s Strain’ $ 12.00 A seed propagated strain of coral bells, it features silver- blue foliage with white flowers in the spring. Drought tolerant and an excellent plant for the shade. Will get about 18” tall when in bloom. Will spread slowly as a clump and can be divided every few years. Virginia Bluebell Mertensia virginica $ 12.00 This native flower is a hallmark of spring in Virginia. A great woodland plant, this is a spring ephemeral as the flower and leaves will die back and disappear in the summer. Lungwort Pulmonaria 'Mrs. Moon' $ 12.00 This is a well proven plant for the shady or woodland garden. The mounded silver-spotted foliage is attractive and its blue flowers are brilliant. Foamflower Tiarella cordifolia $ 12.00 This native woodland plant makes a great groundcover, spreading slowly by stolons. 10” tall white spiky flowers bloom in late spring. Likes plenty of organic matter and consistent moisture. Toad Lily Tricyrtis f. 'Autumn Glow' $ 12.00 These plants don’t get a lot of attention in the MSV Water Garden until they bloom in late summer/early fall. The mottled, orchid-like flowers are best seen up close, so plant them along a garden path. They can reach 30” tall. Vines Woodbine Clematis virginiana $ 12.00 This native is a good alternative for the invasive sweet autumn clematis. This vigorous vine features coarsely toothed leaves and scented white flowers in the late summer and fall. Can grow 12-20’ tall. Carolina Jessamine Gelsemium sempervirens $ 12.00 This woodland vine is a showstopper in the MSV gardens, planted on an arbor. Semi-evergreen foliage bronzes a little in the winter but fills out nicely each summer. Shrubs for sunny spots Shrubs that do well with more than 6 hours of direct sun a day. Most shrubs are in 3-gallon pots. Red Chokeberry Aronia arbutifolia 'Brilliantissima' $ 30.00 This 8’ tall native shrub has white spring flowers and brilliant red fall berries popular with birds. Great for naturalized plantings. Best in full sun but can tolerate some shade. Grown at the MSV near the Jasmine Allée. Carolina Allspice Calycanthus floridus $ 30.00 This native shrub will grow 5’ high and wide and features fragrant reddish-brown flowers that bloom in spring. Deer resistant. A specimen is growing near the tool shed at the MSV. Summersweet Clethra alnifolia ‘Ruby Spice’ $ 30.00 Spikes of fragrant, pink flowers cover this plant in mid- summer. Blooms best in full sun, but naturally grows under larger trees. Does well in moist soils. Shrubs grow about 3’ tall and wide. Several are planted in the shrub border behind the Pink Pavilion in the Glen Burnie Gardens. Red twig dogwood Cornus sericea 'Baileyi' $ 30.00 This native shrub naturally grows in low wet areas along lakes and rivers. While it has small white flowers in late spring the red twigs in winter make a spectacular show. It grows about 6’ tall and wide and is good for attracting wildlife. Witch Alder Fothergilla major 'Mt. Airy' $ 30.00 This native shrub with fragrant white bottlebrush flowers in spring has bright yellow-orange leaves in the fall. Best in a shrub border or foundation planting. Upright growth habit and gets to 6’ tall and 4'. Look for them growing in the shrub border behind the Jasmine Allée at the MSV. Winterberry - female Ilex verticillata ‘Winter Red’ $ 30.00 This native holly features dark green leaves that will bronze in the fall and drop in the winter to reveal bright red berries that will persist through the winter. Can grow 9’ tall and 8’ wide. Produces more berries in full sun but can tolerate some shade. Will need a male winterberry (see below) to pollinate the female flowers. Winterberry - male Ilex verticillata ‘Southern Gentleman’ $ 30.00 This male form of winterberry blooms when the female ‘Winter Red’ flowers and is one of the better pollinators to ensure good berry set in the female. One male will provide enough pollen for 3-4 female shrubs. Not quite as large as the female, it will grow 8’ tall and wide. Does not produce berries. Virginia sweetspire Itea virginica 'Henry's Garnet' $ 30.00 A cultivar of a native shrub found naturally growing in wet locations. However, has good drought tolerance. Can handle full sun or shade. Spreads gradually and has long fragrant white flowers in late spring/early summer. Great fall foliage. Will get to 4’ tall and 5’ wide. Ninebark Physocarpus opulifolius ‘Summer Wine’ $ 30.00 A rounded shrub that does well in poor soils. It will get 8’ tall and wide. The purple foliage is striking and it will produce pink flowers in late spring. Drought tolerant. Used for a hedge in the MSV parking lot, but it makes a great specimen plant as well. Burkwood viburnum Viburnum utile ‘Conoy’ $ 30.00 This compact evergreen shrub features glossy green foliage. Growing only 4-5’ tall and 7-8’ wide it makes an excellent hedge. White flowers appear in April. Shrubs for shady spots Shrubs that are happy with less than six hours of direct sunlight Most shrubs are in 3-gallon pots Witchhazel Hamamelis virginiana $ 75.00 A large native shrub that can grow 15-25’ tall and 20-25’ wide with spreading branches and a rounded crown. It produces bright yellow strappy flowers in the fall to early winter. The leaves have excellent fall color as well. Best in a naturalized situation or a large shrub border. Can handle more sun. In a 7-gallon container. Oakleaf hydrangea Hydrangea quercifolia 'Alice' $ 25.00 This native cultivar produces large white cone-shaped flowers. The oak-shaped leaves turn a bright burgundy in the fall for added interest. It will get 5’ wide and tall. One is growing in the shade of the Pink Pavilion.
