MEET CINDY HYDE-SMITH A Q & A with the Senator ADP: What is the most fulfilling aspect of your role as a U.S. Senator? First of all, it is a great privilege and honor to represent the people of Mississippi in the United States Senate, and I am working hard to fulfill the trust placed in me. As a United States Senator, it’s my job to help ensure the new generation of Mississippians will operate in an environment that encourages risk taking, rewards innovative thinking, and breeds entrepreneurship – an environment that is, in its very essence, American. Technology and innovation fuel economic growth, advance health, and promote public safety. As a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, I get to see a particularly interesting side of our federal government’s priority setting on where to put our tax dollars to move the country forward. This work has given me a clearer understanding of the unique economic opportunities that the aerospace industry in particular, including defense aerospace and the growing unmanned aerial systems field, presents for this region. I find it fulfilling to be able to ensure our interests are taken into account as the Senate debates national issues, like the budget, disaster relief, health care, or agriculture policies. It’s a challenge, but there’s satisfaction in finding a policy or law that needs fixing, and then going at it, step by step, to make those changes so Mississippi will benefit. That’s what I’m trying to do now to improve flood control in our state. I also find it very gratifying to have veterans, parents, and even children come to me for help. I want all Mississippians to know they have someone in Washington who will listen to them and do everything possible to help them. What advice do you have for business professionals aspiring to enter politics? Jump right in. If you believe you can contribute to improving the lives of your fellow citizens, then get involved. Public office isn’t, and shouldn’t be, primarily reserved for lawyers and political science majors. I don’t fit that stereotype. My husband Mike and I are small business owners. I am a woman and mother. These characteristics allow me to bring different perspectives to the table. I think a variety of views, including those from the business sector, improve the process of governing at the federal, state, and local levels. The fact is that we’re all affected by political decisions made every day. It seems to me that we should all take part in the process. This includes registering to vote, helping someone you respect to campaign for public office, and making sure they do a good job once elected. It is our right and our duty as Americans to participate in the democratic process. If we are to be good citizens, we need to be informed and work to influence the political life of our communities and our state. PAGE 6
What do you see as the most challenging issues the country faces today? Maintaining our strong national defense and securing the homeland are challenges that demand consistent vigilance and a willingness to ensure resources are dedicated to protecting the American people and their interests. A broken immigration system and a health care system weighed down by Obamacare are among the leading challenges facing the United States. I am also troubled by the hyper-partisanship in our national political discourse. We’ve got to find a way to work together as Americans to address the problems that demand attention. With each passing day, technological know-how grows increasingly vital in our efforts to maintain a strong economy, healthy population, and safe borders, streets, and schools. Our ability to successfully advance technology and innovation will, more than any other single factor, determine our nation’s future as we compete with emergent technological powers like China. Where do you hope to see Mississippi in the next 10 years? As I mentioned, Mississippi has so much potential, and recent job growth and an improving quality of life are not happening by accident. Mississippi needs continued economic growth and job creation, and it starts in each local community. Every municipality and organization in our state brings something unique and valuable to this effort. Whether it be research, workforce training, infrastructure, recreation, or simply citizens who get up and go to work every day, we’re all in this together. Over the next decade, I’d love to see us maximize our potential as a leader in unmanned aerial systems and high-performance computing. We can continue to build on our contributions to the defense, aerospace, automotive, and other manufacturing sectors. I always want to see our farmers and ranchers producing more food and fiber to offer the world, and that includes Mississippi’s abundant timber resources. I also would like to see stronger rural communities that are full partners and participants in the growth of our state. In this and all other issues that come before the Senate, I can assure you that I will do my best to make the right decisions for the people of Mississippi. The bottom line is that all of us can, and should, work to improve the quality of life of all Mississippians, so that each of us has the ability to work and raise a family in our great state.
