This 10-day Indonesia vacation takes you across Bali, staying in the centres of Seminyak, Ubud, and Sanur as you explore this verdant island. As Indonesia’s most popular tourist destination, Bali has a lot going for it. Its landscape is a mixture of jungle and beach, making it both an ideal spot to go for wildlife hikes and the ultimate beach getaway. You’ll start your Bali vacation in Seminyak, the flashy expat centre in the island’s southwest. In Seminyak, you’ll spend your days taking advantage of the wide, sandy beach that’s typically less crowded than others on Bali. If you need a break from the sun, the wealth of design shops and galleries will keep you occupied, as will the lively nightlife. While in Seminyak, you’ll take a day to visit the Kintamani region in the island’s interior. You’ll tour the quaint villages that dot the region, but the highlight of your day trip will be a visit to the active volcano on Mount Batur, which continues to smoke to this day. Sitting at 1,700 metres high, Mount Batur is an impressive sight and casts a foreboding shadow over the island. In addition to the volcano, you’ll visit a silversmith’s workshop in the village of Celuk and explore the 11th-century Hindu temple complex in Tampaksiring. After Seminyak and the Kintamani region, your next stop on your Bali vacation will be Ubud, a small town located about 50 kilometres from most other tourist centres. Located among gently-rolling rice paddies and steep ravines, Ubud has a tranquil, even spiritual, atmosphere. As such, it’s a hotbed for wellness, with yoga and meditation courses some of the most popular practices here. Spend your time in Ubud taking advantage of the slow rhythm and recalibrating your mind and body. It’s also a great spot for shopping, so be sure to peruse the local crafts, batiks, clothes, and paintings, to see what souvenirs you want to take home with you. The final stop is Sanur Beach, a pampering beach resort on the east coast. Take advantage of the resort spa and treat yourself to a massage. WEATHER Entertainment From traditional dance performances to raucous dance clubs, Bali does it all. Art is integral to the local culture, and visitors adore the sights and sounds that reveal the island’s richness. When you aren’t busy touring museums and falling in love with gamelan melodies, dive literally or figuratively into the stunning Balinese scenery and enjoy all the outdoor amazement it has to offer. Museums While the Balinese capital houses a notable museum, aptly called the Bali Museum, the Agung Rai Museum of Art in Ubud is usually the first recommendation from local lips. The museum houses a remarkable private collection by Balinese, Javanese, and foreign artists, including the highly acclaimed Walter Spies. Also found in Ubud are the well-established Museum Puri Lukisan , extensive Museum Rudana, and popular Neka Museum, which serves as a city landmark and offers a setting as beautiful as its artworks. Time permitting, visitors can even day trip to the villages of Batuan and Mas to see painters, woodcarvers, and mask makers at work. Art enthusiasts can also drop by the Taman Wedhi Budaya art center in Denpasar for even more aesthetic delights. The attraction houses several quality galleries and provides an outlet for expression across various mediums. Moreover, the art center hosts the annual Bali Arts Festival, where you can see art, music, and dance displays par excellence. Performing Arts Dance plays a sizable role in Balinese cultural and spiritual ceremonies. It is believed to balance the order of the cosmos and act as a bridge between man and god. The mythological Barong is often portrayed in these ceremonies, which chronicles the triumph of good over evil and illustrate elements of Balinese Hinduism. Also popular is the Ramayana ballet, a reenactment of the kidnap and rescue of beautiful Sita Edwina Warder info@ebiztravel.net page 13 of 19 8009066756 (office)
Also popular is the Ramayana ballet, a reenactment of the kidnap and rescue of beautiful Sita complete with whimsical forest creatures and emotional movements. Pasar Senggol at the Grand Hyatt and many other hotel restaurants, stage similar performances accompanied by lavish buffet dinners. Legong, a quintessential demonstration of Balinese femininity and grace, and Baris, the masculine equivalent, have also garnered worldwide interest. In kebyar duduk, the dancer sits cross-legged almost throughout, emphasizing hand, wrist, and torso movements, as well as powerful facial expressions. Apart from most major hotels, independent restaurants such as Canangsari Restaurant in Sanur and Bumbu Bali in Tanjung Benoa also present opportunities for gastronomic indulgence and artistic appreciation. Kecak, originally part of the sacred sanghyang dance, involves some 100 performers dramatizing the fight between Rawana and Hanoman from the Ramayana epic. Tourists enjoy this fascinating show at cultural centers within villages such as Batubulan or, on some evenings, along Jalan Bypass Ngurah Rai Sanur. Lastly, dance also graces ritual festivals throughout Bali. Drop by Pura Desa and Pura Puseh Batuan on the first or 15th of the month to catch the ancient gambuh dance drama. Otherwise, treat yourself to something uniquely Balinese with a celebrated wayang kulit performance, Indonesia’s oldest art form, which retells the stories of the Ramayana and the Mahabharata using puppets. The puppeteer, known as the dalang, sits cross-legged on stage and maneuvers brightly painted puppets that appear as silhouettes against a screen lit by a lamp from behind. Notably, the Pura Jagatnatha in Denpasar hosts a show twice a month, on full and new moons. Nightlife A pulsating party scene runs through southern Bali every night, concentrating in Kuta and its surrounding areas. Nightlife in the heart of Kuta undoubtedly begins with the ever-popular Hard Rock Cafe Bali. As the night rolls on, the party-goers gravitate toward Jalan Legian. The Irish pub Paddy's also turns into a discotheque at night, while the Apache Reggae Bar pulses with live reggae music. Espresso Bar & Pizzeria lies among the many other nightclubs strewn across the area. In contrast, the quieter areas of Seminyak, Ubud, Sanur, and Nusa Dua offer a more sedate atmosphere where drinks and small talk reign supreme. Seminyak contains a cluster of trendy nightspots frequented by tourists and locals alike. On Jalan Seminyak, Jaya Pub blares out live rock music. Several other bars continue the frenzy well into the morning, including the Santa Fe Bar & Grill, which features cover bands four nights a week and is open around the clock. In Nusa Dua, most hotels have in-house bars, each imparting a different atmosphere. Notable nightclubs here include the Cascade Bar in The Laguna. Evening entertainment in Sanur is confined to a handful of places, chief among them the Jazz Bar & Grill, one of the area's more upbeat drinking spots. A “single” room tends to be smaller than double or twin rooms. Please note that all rooms are allocated at the discretion of the hotel and cannot be guaranteed. Our hotel ranking is identified using the following descriptions: Basic – Very primitive accommodation where we are not aware of anything better in the region. Simple – Clean and simple but limited facilities Medium – Good quality accommodation First Class – High-quality accommodation with a wider range of facilities Deluxe – Superb accommodation with facilities and service to match Opulent – The world’s most unashamedly luxurious hotels and lodges The hotel classifications are given in our brochures, custom itineraries, dossiers and fact sheets are for guidance only. They are not based on any national or international classification system, they are the opinions of our staff and are quite subjective. World travel and cultural differences Many of our destinations are in the developing world where attitudes, infrastructure, priorities, lifestyles and cultures are very different from our own. This is often the very reason to visit the destination but certain aspects may be frustrating. We always advise that the first thing you should pack is your sense of humor. This can prove invaluable when traveling over rougher roads, waiting for a delayed aircraft and communicating with hotel staff whose first language is not English. Health and safety standards Each country has its own regulations and enforcement levels relating to health and safety standards. These do not always match the very high standards we may be used to in North America. We therefore recommend that you follow a few precautionary safety procedures. Always check where the nearest fire exit is and how to sound the fire alarm. Do not enter a swimming pool before checking the water depth first. For more suggestions please see the Important Information section of your Travel Organizer. Security Opportunist crime such as bag-snatching and pick-pocketing is, unfortunately, a fact of life in many destinations. Use your common sense when walking around, make use of hotel safes where available, and leave all but essential valuables at home. Brochure and Custom Itinerary accuracy We thoroughly check all the information that is included in our brochures and custom itineraries, however, changes do occur and errors are occasionally made. Airlines may change their schedules, roads may close and government regulations may change. Should there be any changes to the travel arrangements you have booked we will do our best to keep you informed prior to departure. Edwina Warder info@ebiztravel.net page 18 of 19 8009066756 (office)
