Dear Residents,
Congratulations on joining the USC Upstate Spartan family! I, along with the
rest of the Housing and Residential Life team, are busy with final preparations
for your arrival and are excited to welcome you HOME!
This year, we are #BackToBetter, welcoming more students to campus while
still following the latest recommendations for COVID-19 by the CDC. To ensure
that safest environment for all, we are still encouraging Spartans to #MaskUP in
close spaces and when social distancing is not possible.
Welcome Home Spartans!

The Department of Housing & Residential Life has continued to work and ensure
that we offer the best housing options for you knowing that we can only control
what we can control; your decisions and actions will dictate our ability to
provide a good community experience for those living on campus. We
will rely heavily on you to do your part.
Living on campus provides endless opportunities for getting involved, having fun
and making friends. Our on-campus community is centered on supporting your
personal growth and academic success as a USC Upstate Spartan. It is our
mission to create a memorable experience by promoting inclusive learning
environments beyond the classroom while providing a community of care to
                         residential students.
This guide is designed to help you settle into your new home. As you prepare for
the big move, familiarize yourself with our facilities, polices, and MoveUP!
Procedures. Spend some time thinking about how you will customize your space
                         for comfort and success.
We hope you have reached out to your roommates and suitemates to discuss your
living environment and “meet” each other virtually before August 14; it makes all
the difference in the world, to start of the year on the right foot by knowing your
                         roommates.
There are two things to take care of before MoveUP:
                                1) Upload your COVID document as directed by Health Services to the
                                   Health Portal
                                2) Upload your declarations page of the required Renters Insurance in
                                   the housing portal.
I wish you the very best as you begin your collegiate career and look forward to
having you as a positive and productive citizen of the USC Upstate Housing and
                         Residential Life community! Go Spartans!
                                                    Sincerely,
                                                    Julie McMahon, M.S.
Director of Housing and Residential Life

                                                                                                  2|Page

MoveUP
   2021

MoveUP (Check In/Move In) day is a busy and exciting time for both students and families.
Following health recommendations, our MoveUP process will continue to be encouraged at 2
persons helping a student; all must wear a mask.

Freshmen and transfer students should take the following steps for a successful moveUP:

   1) Submit immunization documents before arrival to campus by uploading to your health
portal. This includes your COVID document as well.
   2) Think about “what” you really need to bring initially. Are you able to bring move items
       after Labor Day?
   3) Upload your renters insurance policy to the housing portal.

Fall freshmen athletes (soccer, volleyball and cross country) will arrive based upon the schedule
provided by Athletics.

Freshmen and Transfer MoveUP is Saturday, August 14, 2021

       4th floor 8:00 am - 9:30 am

3rd floor 10:00 am – 11:30 am (this includes Villa 8 freshmen athletes)

       2nd floor 1:00 pm – 2:30 pm

       1st floor 3:00 pm – 4:30 pm

Upper-class (Returning) students move into the Villas:

   - Villas 1 & 7 between 10:00 am – 11:00 am
   - Villas 2 & 8 between 11:00 am – 12:00 noon

                                                                                        5|Page
2021 MoveUP Traffic Information
For MoveUP 2021, the USC Upstate Police Department will be handling all traffic and control of
the parking lots. If you travel with more than one vehicle, the second vehicle must NOT enter
the check-in process; upon arriving to campus pull to the side and then park in one of the
overflow lots (URC or North Commuter).
Please access campus from Valley Falls Road onto University Way (at the light). If you are not
cleared by Health Services (having uploaded your COVID document before 8/12) you will need
to stop at the Health Services bldg. on University Way to be tested for COVID; your moveUP will
be delayed by about an hour.
From University Way, make your way onto Grambling Drive at the roundabout. Continue on
Grambling to the lower HEC parking lot entrance by the Arboretum; staff will be at a tent to
wave you into the right location.
Pull up alongside the HEC where the tents are located with happy Admissions staff welcoming
you to campus. Students shall exit vehicles and bring their USC student ID with them. If the
student drove their own vehicle, please park in the HEC lot and walk into the building.
Families will be instructed to pull forward to North Campus Boulevard and turn right driving
past the building and entering the residential parking lot where the tents are. Staff here will
provide you with a dashboard placard indicating the time out of the lot.
All traffic will move along the parking lot on the west side (closest to the HEC building) allowing
families and volunteers to easily cross from the parking lot to the residence halls. DO NOT
ATTEMPT to drive on the east side of the parking lot.
For those living in Magnolia, park in the upper part of the parking lot. If you are residing in
Palmetto, it is best to park in the lower portion of the lot.
After your vehicle has been unloaded, drive through the lot on the west side and exit from the
center returning your placard to the staff.
We recommend that those from Magnolia House, move to the URC Lot (turn left out of the
parking lot) and those from Palmetto House move to the North Commuter Lot (turn right out of
the parking lot and park across from Magnolia House on the left).
Be mindful of pedestrians traffic from the lot to the buildings and crossing the
street.
Trailers and oversized vehicles are NOT recommended and may require parking in the
commuter lot further away from the residential area.

                                                                                         6|Page
Getting Settled
In Your Room
WIFI: All residential areas are equipped with wireless internet. WIFI is available across
campus for all students.
Streaming Services: Students bringing a television will need to have a streaming service set-
up in order to watch TV. We no longer offer cable for on-campus residences.

In Your Residence Hall
Information Desks: Magnolia House, Palmetto House and Sparty’s Den feature an
information desk where helpful services are provided. Resident Advisers (RAs) and Desk
Assistants (DAs) welcome guests, answer questions, and help ensure resident’s safety. At the
information desks, residents can offer suggestions, register concerns, learn how to submit work
orders, inquire about upcoming events and more. Get to know the RAs and DAs and know that
they are here to help. The Magnolia and Palmetto House Information Desks are staffed 24/7 by
student employees. Sparty’s Desk has modified hours in the afternoon and evenings.
Laundry Facilities: Laundry facilities are provided for your convenience on each floor of
Magnolia and Palmetto House. Laundry machines are FREE! All you’ll need to bring is high-
efficiency laundry detergent. The machines operate with LaundryAlert, allowing you to receive
text messages or email when your load is complete. The laundry facilities for the Villa residents
are in the Landing, between Villas 8 & 9.
Postal Services: Packages and mail can be picked up from the package lockers on the ground
floor of Palmetto House for all residential students. You will receive an email when your
package has been placed in a locker and that email will contain a unique code for you to retrieve
your package. Packages are not accepted at Information desks or in the Housing and
Residential Life office.
Safety and Security: All entrance doors and hallways are secured with card readers and
cameras. Your student ID card will allow you access into your assigned residence hall and onto
your floor. You will use a hard key to access your suite door and bedroom. Remember to lock
the door every time you leave and to never give your student ID to someone to gain access to the
building.
Visitation: Visitation will be granted to rooms as they submit their Roommate Workbooks.
Please refer to the visitation section in the Guide to Residential Living for more on the policy.
We reserve the right to alter visitation based on the rise in COVID-19 cases in our area which
may include the temporary ban on overnight guests.

                                                                                          7|Page
Your Roommate
Whether your roommate is already an acquaintance or someone you just met, it is important to
communicate effectively and learn to problem solve early on. Use the acronym FIND as a
method for communicating and getting to know your roommate and suitemates.

(F) Family – Talking about those you know and love best makes for a great starter topic when
getting to know your new roommate.

(I) Interests – Share you hobbies and passions from the start. You may find that you have
more in common than you think!

(N) Negotiables – Discuss your biggest pet-peeves and determine each of your
negotiables/non-negotiables to avoid potential conflict.

(D) Destiny – Share what each of you hope to accomplish at USC Upstate and in life. Discuss
your majors, classes, and future. Strive to support one another in accomplishing your goals!

We hope that you FIND a lifelong friend in your roommate!

Room Changes
Room changes are considered after the third full week of the semester. You may obtain a Room
Change Request form for room and roommate changes in the Housing and Residential Life
office. We review and grant requests based on availability ONLY after attempts to mediate the
roommate situation have been attempted with trained staff. Speak with your RA for more
information. Please keep in mind that we may have to check with the Health Services staff for
your COVID status before we will grant a move.

We will begin accepting forms/requests Monday, August 30 but moves will not be granted until
after Labor Day. Moves in the spring will begin after January 31, 2022.

Consolidation
Consolidation is the process of moving students, who through no fault of their own, find
themselves without a roommate usually due to a No Show or Late Cancellation. Students may
buy-out the room by a deadline to have a double as a single with the additional cost or
consolidate with another student. The students may select who moves and if an agreement is
not reached, we based the decision on the priority date of application to housing. Fall
consolidation begins August 27 and wraps up September 25. Spring consolidation begins
January 14 and wraps up February 12.

                                                                                    8|Page
