We are
the destination of your journey.
Mount Säntis is the highest mountain in eastern Switzerland. The Säntis
cable car starts out from Schwägalp, which is easy to reach throughout the
year without a Swiss motorway toll sticker using well-maintained roads
that are kept clear of snow in winter. There is plenty of free parking at the
cable car base station (including bus and disabled parking bays).

By train to Urnäsch or Nesslau. Then by post bus straight to the base station.

Mount Säntis and Schwägalp put on their very best show
in the summer, with the breathtaking view from the summit taking
in no less than six countries.
Hiking in the summer months
Mount Säntis and Schwägalp are lo-
cated in the centre of one of the most
beautiful hiking trail networks span-
ning from Appenzellerland to Tog-
genburg. The trails offer something
for everyone: from first-timers all the
way to mountaineering experts. A lei-
surely walk on the trails around the
hotel on Schwägalp, a hike in the sur-
rounding area or a trek through the
mountains – every trail is sure to take
you right into the heart of this incom-
parable region. A place where Swit-
zerland is still quaint and traditional.
Our tips
For a leisurely stroll, we recommend
the four themed trails: Moorlands,
Man & Environment, Forest, and
Alpine Farming. You can find lots of
interesting information about these
themes right at the valley station.
Each trail takes between 30 and 60
minutes to complete.
For skilled hikers, we recommend the
route from Schwägalp to Mount Sän-
tis under good conditions. The red-
and-white marked trail takes you
past precipitous passages and as-
cents to the Gasthaus Tierwis before
continuing on the Himmelsleiter up
to the Säntis summit. The trail takes
around 3 hours to complete with good
hiking equipment.

Starting at Schwägalp at the foot of
Mount Säntis, the Nature Discovery
Park combines tourism, research and
nature conservation. It offers numer-
ous options for guided tours, interest-
ing activity programmes or even
open-air teaching.
Nature trails
The different nature trails invite you
on a voyage of discovery. A series of
signposts takes you to the main
sights, and information boards are
set up at points of special interest.

The adventure begins right next to
“Säntis – the hotel”. The Geology
Park set up around a spiral path re-
veals the secrets of the alpine rock
going back millions of years and ex-
plains the habitat of that time com-
plete with its inhabitants.
Schwägalp demonstration dairy
Every year from May to November,
the demonstration dairy gives you an
interesting insight into the produc-
tion of cheese. Fresh alpine milk
products are also available straight
from the producer in the demonstra-
tion dairy shop (for opening times,
visit www.saentisbahn.ch).
Alpine farming
The free-roaming goats and cows
can eat their fill of fresh grass here
from spring to late summer before
the autumn cattle drive takes place.

A snowy wonderland.
In winter, huge quantities of snow turn Mount Säntis and
Schwägalp into a wonderland in white: winter walks,
sledging and skiing are on the agenda. And then it‘s time
for a pleasant meal in one of the various restaurants.
Hiking in the winter months
Take a walk through the snowy land-
scape and let the magic of winter
transport you to a fairy-tale wonder-
land. The winter hiking trails are well
groomed from the first snowfall until
the end of March and offer plenty of
space for winter hiking, sledging or
snowshoe tours. In the midst of this
unique natural scenery, the marked
trails offer you the chance to experi-
ence nature up close without dis-
turbing the local wildlife. For this
reason, we kindly ask that you stick
to the paths.
Our tip
For romantics and walking fans, the
romantic “Laternliweg” walking cir-
cuit is lit by petroleum lanterns every
Thursday, Friday and Saturday
evening. The glimmering lights are a
magical experience for young and
old. The walk takes around 45 min-
utes to complete.

The walking circuit next to “Säntis –
the hotel” is illuminated with lan-
terns every Thursday to Saturday
evening from November to March.
The romantic walk takes about
40 minutes and is taking you through
the Nature Discovery Park and is
ending at “Säntis – the hotel”, where
you can warm yourself up again over
a cheese fondue or raclette. The
walking circuit is also illuminated to
