Heritage Open Days 2018 Heritage Open Days celebrates England’s fantastic architecture and culture by offering free access to properties that are usually closed to the public or normally charge for admission. For the first time in its 24-year history, Heritage Open Days will take place over 2 consecutive weekends in September. This year the theme for the event is ‘Extraordinary Women’. Every year in September, buildings of every age, style and function throw open their doors with a once-a-year chance to discover hidden architectural treasures and enjoy a wide range of tours, events and activities which bring to life local history and culture. Free of charge and literally on people’s doorstep, Heritage Open Days is an event for everyone, whatever their background, age and ability. Co-ordinated nationally by Heritage Open Days National Partnership, the event thrives on the enthusiasm and expertise of local people. Thousands of volunteers from all walks of life share their knowledge and memories with visitors, making Heritage Open Days England’s largest voluntary cultural event. All Saints & Martyrs Church, Langley Wood Street, Middleton, Manchester M24 5GL The amazing Langley Cross stands some 13 or so metres tall and is housed in All Saints & Martyrs Church. Sculpted in aluminium by Geoffrey Clarke, it is probably the artist’s biggest commission and was cast using pioneer techniques which he himself developed. Sadly Geoffrey Clarke died four years ago and since then a lot has been written about his work, which can be found all over the country. Langley is truly blessed to have this breath-taking work of art. There will be talks on the Langley Cross during the opening times of the church. Saturday 15 September: 11am - 3pm Bamford Chapel and Norden URC Norden Road, Bamford, Rochdale OL11 5PQ This year, Bamford Chapel and Norden URC are delighted to be celebrating over 200 years of births, deaths and marriages which have taken place at the chapel. Did you celebrate your wedding here? We’d love to see your photographs and if you wish, add them to our archive. Do you have relatives buried in our graveyard? The burial register will be available to view. This is a great opportunity to research your family connections with the chapel. Many archives, photographs and other memorabilia will be on display. The congregation from the church at Norden now worship at Bamford Chapel and Norden URC. Archives from there will also be on view. The Heritage Open Days present a perfect opportunity for you to come and to learn more about the unique story of this non-conformist chapel. Christ Church, Healey Christ Church, Gandy Lane, Rochdale OL12 6EF Christ Church, Healey welcomes you. The main display this year will be inspirational ‘Women during the First World War’. There will be lots to see and do for all ages. Designed by the renowned George Shaw, Christ Church Healey is a Victorian Gothic Grade II listed church. The foundation stone was laid in 1849 by Jacob Tweedale of Healey Hall and the church consecrated in 1850. The landmark bell tower has been under restoration for three years. The life of Christ is illustrated in stained glass windows attributed to Messrs Percy Bacon & Co of London, and symbols of masonic patronage can be seen in the intricately carved doors to the East End. The displays planned for this year will include: Inspirational women in the First World War and women from the bible depicted in the stained glass windows. Also available to view will be historical documents, with original letters from founders Jacob Tweedale and Albert Royds, as well as a wide range of photographs of events past and present. There will be organ music from 12 noon - 2pm Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Morning Coffee and Afternoon Teas will be available daily. Sunday Eucharist is at 10am. Maximum 30 people per tour/session. Travelling from Rochdale on the A671 Whitworth Road. Gandy Lane is on your left 2.2 miles from Rochdale. After approx. 2 miles you will pass on the right ‘The Oxford’ Pub. Continue over a mini roundabout and Gandy Lane is the next left turning where you will see a Rossendale, Lancashire boundary sign at the start of Gandy Lane. There is a large church car park just half way up the lane. There are two access routes from the car park to the church. 1. In front of the Church Hall there are three steps from car park level to ground level then access is fine. 2. Behind the Church Hall the ground is a little uneven across a grassed area. 3. Drop off parking directly outside church provides level access. Once in church the only two restrictions are: 1. The east end restoration area where there are two steps into that area. 2. Greater Manchester Fire Service Museum Old Fire Station, Maclure Road, Rochdale OL11 1DN Fire appliances (1741-1972), equipment, uniforms, medals and models including a Victorian fire station and blitz tableaux will be on view. Refreshments will be available. Visitor entrance is via the Maclure Road gate. Visitor parking is available in the museum yard (entrance via Richard Street at the rear of the old Fire Station). Friday 7 September: 10am - 4pm Friday 14 September: 10am - 4pm BOOKING NOT NECESSARY Hare Hill House Hare Hill Park, Hare Hill Road, Littleborough OL15 9HF Hare Hill House will be open for guided tours, with our volunteers dressing the House as it may have looked 100 years ago, with a debate in the Council Chamber and offices of the Votes for Women, Littleborough branch. An exhibition will be on display that demonstrates the significant impact that the women of Littleborough have made towards national life. A guided tour of our Newall Heritage Trail will be available and a self-guided exhibition of “Extraordinary Women of Littleborough” will also be available. Maximum 6 people per tour/session. House tours take approximately 1 hour; Newall Heritage Trail walk takes approximately 1 hour 45 minutes. Hare Hill House is located in Hare Hill Park adjoining Littleborough Library. Hollingworth Lake Heritage Walk Hollingworth Lake Visitor Centre, Rakewood Road, Littleborough OL15 0AQ Join us for this heritage themed walk around Hollingworth Lake, hearing about the people and events that have shaped this fascinating area. Part of the route will be on country paths, and there will be at least one stile to cross. Café and parking available. Horse Carrs Horse Carrs, Shawclough Road, Rochdale OL12 6LG The exhibition presents the on-going story of Horse Carrs as it continues to serve the local community and includes archival displays on: Horse Carrs, The Watson Family and The West Street Baptist Church. Horse Carrs, built in 1865, last year celebrated its 150th year. Originally built as the family home of the Silk Mill Manufacturer, Thomas Watson, who was also a benefactor to the town of Rochdale. Visit the building and talk to our historian about the history of the Watson family and the building. View the pictorial history of the building to current date and enjoy a PowerPoint presentation of the Watson Family, in addition to various items of related archival material. Then visit the coffee house for refreshments (Thursday & Friday). The exhibition also includes an archival display featuring Miss Frances Marion Watson who was a missionary to China from West Street Baptist Church, Rochdale and an overview of the history of the West Street Baptist Church (the 1st Baptist Church in Rochdale), which is now known as ‘Open Door’ and resides within Horse Carrs. Plus during 6th-9th September, there will also be a small Dolls House display exhibited by the Whibleys Dolls House Club. From Rochdale town centre-A58, then Spotland Road (A680) then on to B6377 at Sheriff Street to Shawclough Road; the building is just past Falinge High School on the left. Littleborough History Centre Littleborough Station, Platform 2, Station Buildings, Railway Street, Littleborough OL15 8AF Littleborough Archaeological and Historical Society will host the event this year. This heritage centre is based in the original station buildings on the platform of Littleborough Station. For Heritage Open Days, the centre is holding an ongoing exhibition on the fallen soldiers from Littleborough during WWI. There is an extensive archive with numerous photographs and research facilities too. Come into the Local Studies Centre to see an exhibition running throughout the event to discover a selection of local extraordinary women from the past. See how these strong, independent characters changed pre-conceived stereotypes of women and how they helped to put Rochdale on the map. Then, why not explore the Museum, Art Gallery, Visitor Information Centre & gift shop, followed by a visit to the Art Café for light refreshments. Long Street Methodist Church, Middleton Long Street, Middleton, Manchester M24 5UE See the recently restored schoolrooms along with the Arts and Crafts Church which is ‘a knockout’ according to the latest Pevsner guide (2004). Long Street Methodist Church and Schools were built in 1899 by the foremost Arts and Crafts architect in the north of England, Edgar Wood, who was described by Pevsner as ‘that remarkable...Manchester architect’. It is an outstanding Grade II* listed building incorporating Arts and Crafts, Art Nouveau and modern stylistic elements into a magnificent whole. The adjacent school is pure Arts and Crafts with a lovely ‘outdoor room’ garden accessed through an Art Nouveau gateway topped by a cubic modern sculpture. Visitors in 2018 will see the restored school, funded by the Lottery and Viridor, due to be completed in July. Guided walks to visit Edgar Wood buildings in the conservation area leave from the church at 2pm on Sunday 9 September and Saturday 15 September. The length of the walk is about one mile and will take approximately 1 hour 15 minutes. www.artsandcraftschurch.org Located in Middleton’s conservation area close to the main library and Olde Boars Head public house. The church is on the 17 bus route from Manchester to Rochdale. Disabled access is via the rear door on Lever St. Please ring the bell. There are four steps into the nave of the church. Rochdale Arts & Heritage Resource Centre Ever wondered about what is not on display at Touchstones Rochdale? Come and see the wonderful objects in storage at the Arts and Heritage Resource Centre and take a tour with Karen Heatley, who looks after the museum collection. This tour looks at the amazing collections of the borough; you will have the opportunity to see items ranging from Egyptian artefacts, some over 5000 years old, to grandfather clocks and works of art. Details of the venue will be given out when booking. Minimum age: 10 years. Built and rebuilt over the generations, it has stonework dating back to the 13th and 14th centuries. There are also splendid stained glass windows including the Faith, Hope and Charity window by Sir Edward Burne-Jones. There is the 13th century font in which thirties film star Gracie Fields was baptised in 1898. Furniture and carving in the church have connections with the Byron family, Lords of the Manor, until the poet Byron sold the manor in the 1800s. The Queen paid a Royal visit in 1994 to see the church’s 21st century role. This is a family friendly venue, suitable for all ages. Rochdale Town Hall The Esplanade, Rochdale OL16 1AB Rochdale’s fabulous Grade I Victorian Gothic town hall is renowned worldwide for its unique and detailed architecture. Join us on an expertly guided tour and marvel at the wonderful craftsmanship, immerse yourself in the building’s history and take a look inside the Mayor’s Parlour. Opened in 1871, the building has a great story to tell about the growth of Rochdale and its’ place in the world. Tours will begin in the reception area and refreshments are available in the beautiful Clock Tower Dining Room. Thursday 6, Friday 7 & Friday 14 September: 10am, 12pm, 2pm, 4pm Thursday 13 September: 10am, 12pm, 2pm Saturday 15 September: 10am, 12pm BOOKING NOT NECESSARY St Aidan’s Church, Sudden, Rochdale Manchester Road, Sudden, Rochdale OL11 3EL A Grade II* listed building designed by Temple Moore and built by TS Ullathorne of Selby. The Parish Church was consecrated in 1915. Points of interest include a stained glass window designed by Harry Grylls which forms part of the church’s war memorial, an unusual and accessible outside pulpit and a Father Willis Organ which was originally installed in the Park Hall in Cardiff. St John the Baptist RC Church Dowling Street, Rochdale OL11 1EX St John the Baptist RC church contains one of the largest pieces of artwork in the North West. The mosaic that surrounds the high altar depicting Christ the King is dramatic and thought provoking. The church itself is iconic with its large white and blue dome. Maximum 30 people per tour/session, which will last between 30 - 45 minutes. Friday 7 September: 2pm - 4pm Saturday 8 September: 11am - 4pm Sunday 9 & 16 September: 11am - 4pm BOOKING NOT NECESSARY St Leonard’s, Middleton Parish Church St Leonard’s Square, New Lane, Off Long Street, Middleton M24 6DE This Grade I listed church dating from 1100 is famous for its incorporated Norman arches and notable history. Come along to admire the Flodden Window and rare, memorial brasses. This is the oldest church in the Diocese of Manchester. The wooden steeple, added to the tower in 1666, gave rise to the sobriquet, “A wooden steeple for a stubborn people!” Refreshments will be available. Parking is available in St Leonard’s Square. The church, with its unusual steeple, is quite a landmark overlooking the Olde Boars Head Inn and Jubilee Park. St John the Baptist Church, Bircle Castle Hill Road, Bury BL9 6UH Bircle Church is built on rock, stands high above the town and has been there for generations of Bircle folk since 1846. On a clear day there are amazing panoramic views over Bury, Heywood, Rochdale and as far as Blackstone Edge. The building is Grade II listed and designed by local architect George Shaw of Uppermill. The stained glass windows by Thomas Willement, “Father of Victorian Glass” are impressive. Take a look at the several pieces of furniture by skilled craftsman Robert (Mouseman) Thompson of Kilburn, North Yorkshire. On display will be photographs and information relating to Bircle in days gone by, plus local soldiers who lost their lives in WW1 and WW11. Also in the parish is what used to be the Bury Union Workhouse (now Fairfield Hospital), and this year we have collected together photographs and information on life in the Workhouse. On Saturday 8 September there is to be a guided “Ashworth Revisited” walk. This will last approximately two hours and is of moderate difficulty. Parish Church of St Luke, Heywood York Street, Heywood, OL10 4NN A splendid Victorian Gothic church (listed Grade II*, 1862) with majestic proportions. Impressive stained glass, reredos, pulpit and war memorial. Deemed to be a showcase of Victorian art, featuring sculpted stone work, encaustic tiling and wrought iron. There will be people to guide visitors around the church. There are many stained glass windows to see. Archives that are not usually on display will be available and the belfry will be available to view on request. There are interesting gravestones in the churchyard and a display of old photographs showing the old church and Birch Village, plus church records. St Mary in the Baum Church, Rochdale St Mary’s Gate, Rochdale OL16 1DZ St Mary in the Baum Church was awarded Grade I listing by Historic England in 2015. Rochdale’s ‘Hidden Gem’, it is a rare example of the work of Sir Ninian Comper (1864-1960) and is the only church of his design in the northern ecclesiastical Province of York. Modest in design from the outside, the interior is a revelation. Built in 1911, to replace an earlier 18th century ‘chapel of ease’, the church has an unusual arrangement with the main aisle, choir and sanctuary on the south side and (as the church is dedicated to St Mary) and a ‘Jesus’ Chapel on the north side. Pillars and unusual roundel windows are from the original church of 1742. The church has an exquisite carved oak rood screen and a striking Comper designed, War Memorial window. Refreshments will be available. There will be a choral evensong taking place at 3pm on Sunday 16 September which all visitors are warmly invited to attend. St Thomas Church, Newhey Church Street, Newhey, Rochdale OL16 3QS We will hold both organised and self-guided tours of our church which had to be completely restored after a devastating fire in 2007. View our new leaflet to help you admire the restoration and marvel at its new light and bright interior. Visitors will be able to see where the rebuilding work was carried out and admire the skill of the dedicated craftsmen who have restored the building beyond its former glory. The church has an outstanding carved pulpit and font. The large fully restored organ was kindly donated by St. Peter’s Church Loughborough and we hope visiting organists from other churches might like to play this beautiful instrument. All the church is wheelchair accessible except the Chancel which has three small steps). The event is not suitable for children under 5yrs. Max 10 people per tour/session. Church St is located immediately after St Thomas’ Primary School on Huddersfield Rd (A640). It is a small lane newly laid with speed bumps and passing places with a new church car-park situated 100 yards beyond the church on the left. Touchstones Rochdale Blue Badge Guided Heritage Trail followed by Afternoon Tea at The Art Cafe The Esplanade, Rochdale OL16 1AQ In support of Heritage Open Days 2018, join us on this free Blue Badge Guided Heritage Trail that will commence and finish at Touchstones Rochdale, where you will learn about Rochdale’s architectural heritage and gain insight into how Rochdale became world famous as the birthplace of the worldwide co-operative movement, and reflect on what life was like in Rochdale during the nineteenth- century. The walk includes some steep inclines and some steps. The guide will meet visitors in the reception area of Touchstones Rochdale. Touchstones Rochdale is an exciting Arts & Heritage Centre with a Museum, Art Gallery, Local Studies Centre, Visitor Information Centre and gift shop, so following your walk why not look around the building, then visit the Art Café to enjoy Afternoon Tea with tea or coffee, a variety of sandwiches and delicious cakes for £9.95 per head, available from 2.30pm. Wardle and Smallbridge Community Centre 110 Wardle Road, Rochdale OL12 9ER This is the 6th year Wardle and Smallbridge Community Building has taken part in Heritage Open Days. Come along to view the interior of the former Wardle Urban District Council Offices opened in 1936, designed by architects Butterworth & Duncan of Rochdale and now in use as Wardle & Smallbridge Community Centre. The ground floor contains The Rates Room which is available, by arrangement, for hire as a meeting venue or for special occasion events. Upstairs will be open to the public with an exhibition by Wardle & Smallbridge History Group of its local history collection. We now have a “Watergrove Room” which includes exquisitely detailed model buildings representing the hamlet of Watergrove prior to inundation when Watergrove Reservoir was constructed in the 1930s. YellowaY Motor Coach Museum Outside Touchstones Rochdale, The Esplanade, Rochdale OL16 1AQ A real treat for Rochdale folk seeking coach travel and holiday nostalgia will be a visit to the town by the mobile YellowaY Motor Coach Museum. The 1915 incorporation of Holt Bros (Rochdale) Ltd, celebrated in 2015, which became Yelloways Motor Services Ltd in 1932 operated luxury coach services from their Rochdale base from 1932 to 1988, taking locals on their annual holidays and day trips in great style to destinations all over Britain. The Yelloway HQ and depot were located on Weir Street, now the site of Number One Riverside. This mobile museum is housed in an original 1976 YellowaY coach, converted into what is probably Britain’s smallest transport museum. Visitors will be able to view the collection of YellowaY memorabilia, photos, posters and model coaches, covering this extended period of the company’s history on Saturday and dream of Wakes Weeks holidays gone by.
