Wednesday English Focus: Informational texts - Endangered animals Watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DN4d76QP_MA As many times as you need to so you can orally (without writing anything down) answer these questions: What are informational texts? What is the difference between fiction and non-fiction? Are facts true or made up? Once you have answered these questions, please watch the video below: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7k8CcAU2Lt0 Now, think and answer these questions orally (without writing anything down): What does the word endangered mean? What are the reasons that animals become endangered? Bronze Silver Gold Your task is to research one of the following endangered rainforest animals and create a fact file about one (or more if you wish) on purple mash. In your 2Do list you are going to find a task for all the animals below. Please complete only one. You can complete more if you want to, but you do not have to. You have until Friday to finish and submit this work. If you need more time, please let me know. • Three toed sloth: https://www.nationalgeographic.com/animals/mammals/group/three-toed-sloths/ https://www.kidzone.ws/animal-facts/sloths/facts.htm https://www.sciencekids.co.nz/sciencefacts/animals/sloth.html https://kids.kiddle.co/Sloth • Sumatran orangutan: https://www.dkfindout.com/uk/animals-and-nature/primates/orang-utans/ https://www.natgeokids.com/uk/discover/animals/general-animals/ten-facts-about-orang-utans/ https://kids.sandiegozoo.org/animals/orangutan https://kids.kiddle.co/Orangutan • Poison dart frog: https://www.kidzone.ws/lw/frogs/facts-poison.htm http://wildlife.durrell.org/library/document/poison_dart_frog.pdf https://kids.sandiegozoo.org/animals/poison-frog https://bristolzoo.org.uk/explore-the-zoo/poison-arrow-frogs • Jaguar: https://kids.sandiegozoo.org/animals/jaguar https://kids.kiddle.co/Jaguar https://www.livescience.com/27301-jaguars.html https://www.natgeokids.com/uk/discover/animals/general-animals/jaguar-facts/ A fact file is an information page that has a lot of facts about the animal we are researching. We can create fact files for anything, not just animals but we will focus on the rainforest animals for now. I would like you to think about the different instruction texts you have written in school so far. I’ll remind you of some: • How to wash a wholly mammoth. • How to make stone soup. Just like these instruction texts, when we are writing a fact file we need to organise our writing so it’s easier for the reader to understand the text. To do so we use headings and subheadings, just like you did when you were writing the instruction texts in school and when you were completing the profile page for Salvador Dali.
Please watch this video to understand this. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JpVTo7bTnXU As you can see a heading is similar with the title of our page. In purple mash the title will be written for you. Subheadings are smaller titles that tell you what the text that follows will be about. For example, when you follow a recipe the words method and equipment are subheadings. When you research the animal of your choice please focus on two of these to write about: • Appearance • Life • Diet • Habitat • If you find other information you want to write about, please choose that. You can use these words as subheadings or you can make the more interesting! For example, instead of “Diet:” you can use a question: “Have you ever wondered what sloths like to eat?” Use the websites above (or research the animal of your choice independently on https://www.kiddle.co/ which is a safe search engine for children) Please remember to use a colon (:) or a question mark and to underline your subheadings. To underline your text on purple mash you need to select the text, click on A at the top left corner of your screen and click on underline (U). There, you can find different fonts and colours to use in your text if you wish. I’m looking forward to seeing your fact files! Optional: If you want, you can share them on our blog when you finish! How to share my work on our blog: • When you finish and hand in your work, click on “Open work” in your 2Do list. • After that, click on the menu (three lines on the top left corner of your page) and click on “Share”. • Finally, click on “Blog about your work” and select the Year 3 blog. In this lesson, we are going to be learning about the importance of exercise through the help of a very special guest! The lesson will involve getting up on our feet and measuring our heart rate before and after exercising. Our guest will then tell us how much exercise we should do everyday - you might be in for a shock! To finish the lesson, we will be creating our own exercise timetable which we can use in school to help us stick to exercising regularly! Computing – Coding In coding we need to give clear instructions so our program does what we want it to do. In this lesson you will complete four challenges. Please go on Purple Mash and start the activity Fun with fish in your 2Do list. Please watch the videos before starting each challenge. There will not be a video for the third challenge. Challenge 1: Make the tuna fish move right. After watching the video, drag the tuna fish in the code window, choose ‘right’ and click on play. If it is correct, there will be a green arrow at the top of your screen that will take you to the next challenge when you click it. Challenge 2: Move the crab left. After watching the video, drag the crab under the tuna in the code window, choose ‘left’ and click on play. If it is correct, there will be a green arrow at the top of your screen that will take you to the next challenge when you click it.
Challenge 3: Fix the program so the fish move right and left. Now, these fish are programmed to move down. Click on the word ‘down’ and change it to left or right. Like this:
Then click on the arrow at the top of the screen to go to the final challenge. Challenge 4: Your own fish program. Now, I would like to experiment with the commands you have used so far. Here is a hint on how to try adding click events so the fish don't start moving until you click them: Have fun and good luck! Finally, save your work:
1. Click on the menu (three purple lines on the top left corner of your screen) 2. Click on ‘Save’, then Year 3 and finally computing. 3. Now name your work like I did using your name and write lesson 3 next to it. Click on Save. Handwriting Please complete the attached handwriting booklet for this week. Use this link to watch videos to understand how to join these letters. https://www.teachhandwriting.co.uk/continuous-cursive-joins-choice-3.html If you were practicing print letters in school (this means you were asked not to join your letters), please complete the attached print letters handwriting sheet.
