editor’s note 705 645 5296 261 CEDAR LANE BRACEBRIDGE, ON w Servicing Muskoka, Haliburton & Parry Sound WHEN I BUILT A GARDEN SHED, my brother Ted and his son Colin came north to help build and install the gambrel roof. While I cut plywood gussets, Ted KITCHENS BATHROOMS LIGHTING HARDWARE SINKS FAUCETS TILES sawed top chords for the trusses and Colin assembled them. We were efficient. Within a few hours the trusses were finished and in place – a job well done. It was well past supper time and I was ready to stop for the day, but Ted kept working on the shed’s trim and other details. I was puzzled. His girlfriend wasn’t. “He won’t stop until there’s no wood left,” she explained with a smile. That kind of familial enthusiasm is evident in all three homes featured in this edition of OUR HOMES. At Brandy Lake, Tara and Heath Billington’s beautiful new home was a family collaboration. Tara, a real estate sales rep, found the waterfront property. Heath, who operates Lake to Lake Construction & Design, drew the plans and built the home. Tara designed and decorated the interior. She planted flower gardens at the front and back gardens that look like they’ve been there for generations. Near Baysville, husband and wife Brad Trott and Erin Monett breathed new life into an old A-frame cottage on the shore of Menominee Lake. They made room in the tiny house for a wood stove, kitchen appliances and a shower. They removed a sleeping loft to create a great view of the lake, installed hardwood flooring and painted the interior white. They had help from friends, but did most of the renovations themselves. On Haliburton Lake, Mark and Sandra built a new family cottage with some great help from son-in-law Joey. He designed stunning, intricate granite and marble finishes for the bathroom floors and showers. His family firm Bluemar Marble supplied the stone for this beautiful work, a true labour of love. The experience of these homeowners shows that while you can sometimes get by with a little help from your friends, you might just get further with family. entertaining DINING ByDESIGN S T ORY REBECCA H AY P H OT OG RAP H Y S T EPH A N I BU CH MAN 5 STEPS TO CREATING A FABULOUS DINING SPACE C Cooler temperatures bring warmer gatherings as we all move indoors to entertain. That also means it’s time to show off your home. No more backyard barbecues here. It’s finally time to highlight your culinary skills or cocktail- making and impress your guests with a dining room design that feels both elegant and comfortable. Here are my five non-negotiable design elements for creating a fabulous dining space. 1 COLOUR & MOOD Think about the mood you wish to evoke. A bright room with fresh white walls and lots of natural light will make you feel awake and alive. This is great for brunches and luncheons. For a more intimate vibe, choose richer colours Visit our website: www.downsviewkitchens.com and warm lighting. I love to use wallpaper and grasscloth in dining rooms. It adds a luxurious touch and can even act as a great conversation starter among guests while you slip away to prepare the meal. 2 FURNITURE LAYOUT Function is foremost to dining room design. If your table is too big, the chairs may bump up against the wall, or if there are too many large furniture items, guests may knock over a lamp (or each other). A general rule of thumb is to keep a minimum of 36 inches between the edge of the table and the wall for chairs. This gives chairs just enough space to pull out so that your guest can slide in. More than 36 inches is even better. entertaining 4 SIZE MATTERS The size of your table is important. It’s not just about what fits in the room (although this is important too). Select a table that accommodates how you like to serve and dine with guests. You want it to have enough space for plates and décor or family-style platters in the middle, but one that still encourages great conversation across the table. 5 Never go smaller than 36 inches wide. In LIGHT IT UP general, tables 42 to 48 inches wide are Lighting is the last main factor and most common. Anything bigger is difficult perhaps the most important one 3 for conversation.
