BY CHARLES MILLS Pack up your hiking shoes to experience some of the most interesting and scenic walking trails in the state of Illinois. STARVED ROCK With all of the stress of COVID-19, I wanted to find a place not too far from home that my wife would enjoy. STATE PARK Scenic trails and more Zoryana is a Universal Banker One at Midland States Bank and I think both of us needed a break from the stress of working every day, not knowing what COVID-19 had in store for us. She couldn’t return to her home country of Ukraine last year due to the pan- demic, so I wanted to find a place that was close to the same feel as her hometown, nestled in the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains. “I grew up in the hills and love to climb and hike,” she said. I found Starved Rock State Park. It’s located along the Illinois River close to Oglesby, just across the river from North Utica to the south and approxi- mately 70 miles north of Bloomington. The park is approximately a three hour drive from Effingham. Learning about Starved Rock’s rich Indian heritage is well worth the trip. “I like that it’s not too far from home and it’s so beautiful,” Zoryana said. “This is a great place to go to get away from busy office life.” There are nearly 14 miles of hiking trails in Starved Rock State Park.
