South Coast Safari
Visitors to the Mendocino Coast expect to see a variety of
wildlife, but African wildlife?
Located just east of Point Arena, the B. Bryan Preserve is
home to nearly 100 African antelope, zebra and giraffe.
Opened in 2004, the 110-acre preserve now plays an impor-
tant role in preservation of several African animals and was
recently named #6 out of the top 10 best U.S. African Safaris
by USA Today.
  B. Bryan Preserve is home to large herds of Sable, Roan
and Kudu antelope which are housed in large pastures that
give a more naturalistic environment. The preserve is also
one of the few places in the world where visitors can see all
three different species of zebra; from the common Plains
Zebra and the threatened Hartmann’s Mountain Zebra to the
critically endangered Grevy’s Zebra, which are now down to
less than 3,000 in their native habitat.
Five male Rothschild’s Giraffe also call B. Bryan Preserve
home. The Rothschild’s numbers in the wild have dropped to
an alarming 1,000 left.
Drop-in visitors are not allowed. Visits to the preserve are
by reservation only for either the mid-morning or late after-
noon feedings. Guests ride in vintage open-air Land Rovers
to view the animals as close as safely possible and end the
tour with getting to feed the giraffe. B. Bryan Preserve photo

Stornetta Public Lands stretch along the coast to the north and south of the lightstation. A family takes the
path that starts midway down Point Arena Lighthouse Road. Below, looking north toward the lighthouse.

Stornetta Public Lands are a crown jewel of the coast
Located in Point Arena, Stornetta Public Lands is 1,665
acres with breathtaking views of the ocean, wildlife and
unique offshore rock formations.
On March 11, 2014, President Barack Obama, using his
executive authority under the Antiquities Act of 1906, signed
a proclamation adding the Stornetta Public Lands to the Cali-
fornia Coastal National Monument. The monument was
established on Jan. 11, 2000, by proclamation of President Bill
Clinton and extends 12 nautical miles offshore.
The Point Arena-Stornetta unit was the first of six onshore
units added to the monument, which includes 20,000 off-
shore rocks, small islands, exposed reefs and pinnacles along
the state’s 1,100-mile coastline from Mexico to Oregon. The
monument’s stewards include Friends of Point Arena-Stor-
netta Lands and the Mendocino Land Trust, among others.
The Stornetta unit is a coastal strip stretching from the Gar- BLM / David Ledig

lent whale-watching as humpback, blue and gray whales ken ground. Eight miles of marked trails range from easy to
migrate between Alaska and Mexico. strenuous.
People have lived on what became the Stornetta land for
thousands of years, arriving in the area when the shoreline
was several hundred meters farther west than it exists today.

The natural beauty that draws today’s visitors to the coast
has also been a magnet for the movie and television industry
from their earliest days. That strong connection sparked the
creation of the highly regarded Mendocino Film Festival,
which celebrates its 13th season June 1-3, 2018.
Silent films on the Mendocino Coast began in 1904 with
“The Sequoia Sempervirens” by the Caspar Lumber Co. and
include “In Search of a Hero” in 1925. Use the maps and
lists to tour locations in Mendocino and along the coast seen
in movies such as “East of Eden” and “The Russians Are
Coming, The Russians Are Coming” and in television shows
such as “Murder, She Wrote.” Movies and television shows
with portions filmed in the town of Mendocino and vicinity
include:
  • “Frenchman’s Creek,” 1943. (1) Big River and (2) Men-
docino Woodlands

Birdwatching is one of the most rewarding ways to turn a
walk along the sea into a journey of discovery.
Here are a number of species you are likely to see, if you
keep your eyes peeled and bring along a pair of birdwatching
glasses:
  • Raptors including Osprey, Peregrine Falcon, White-tailed
Kite and American Kestrel.
  • Brown Pelican, Surf Scoter, grebes (five species), cor-
morants (three species).
  • Heermann’s and other gulls, Caspian Tern.
  • More than 30 species of shorebirds, including Western
Snowy Plover, Black Oystercatcher, Surfbird, Black Turn-
stone, Black-bellied Plover and an occasional Wandering Tattler.
  • Anna’s, Allen’s and occasionally Rufous Hummingbirds
  • Pygmy Nuthatch, Chestnut-backed Chickadee, swallows

Flora & Gardens
The Mendocino Coast’s Mediterranean climate (never too
hot or too cold) makes it home to unique tree, shrub and
flower species that vary widely from tiny wildflowers and
succulents on coastal bluffs to towering redwoods inland.
The Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens, located just
south of Fort Bragg showcases special collections such as
rhododendrons, heaths and heathers and succulents.
At the west end of the 47-acre property, there is an outlook,
which is a great place to sit and enjoy the ocean, while being
protected from the prevailing winds.
The Botanical Gardens also grows incredible vegetables,
much of which they give to the Fort Bragg Food Bank and
partners with the Noyo Chapter of the American Rhododen-
dron Society for the annual John Druecker Rhododendron
Show, the first weekend of May.
Giant redwood trees in forests featuring ferns and rhodo-
dendrons can be seen all over the Mendocino Coast. The
most impressive display is at Montgomery Woods, located a MCBG

Kelley House
Located in the heart of the Mendocino Historic Preserva-

1973, it serves as a learning center that provides access to
thousands of artifacts, photographs and documents. Geneal-

mounted regularly and the “Sunday Afternoon With…” fea-
