South Coast Safari Visitors to the Mendocino Coast expect to see a variety of wildlife, but African wildlife? Located just east of Point Arena, the B. Bryan Preserve is home to nearly 100 African antelope, zebra and giraffe. Opened in 2004, the 110-acre preserve now plays an impor- tant role in preservation of several African animals and was recently named #6 out of the top 10 best U.S. African Safaris by USA Today. B. Bryan Preserve is home to large herds of Sable, Roan and Kudu antelope which are housed in large pastures that give a more naturalistic environment. The preserve is also one of the few places in the world where visitors can see all three different species of zebra; from the common Plains Zebra and the threatened Hartmann’s Mountain Zebra to the critically endangered Grevy’s Zebra, which are now down to less than 3,000 in their native habitat. Five male Rothschild’s Giraffe also call B. Bryan Preserve home. The Rothschild’s numbers in the wild have dropped to an alarming 1,000 left. Drop-in visitors are not allowed. Visits to the preserve are by reservation only for either the mid-morning or late after- noon feedings. Guests ride in vintage open-air Land Rovers to view the animals as close as safely possible and end the tour with getting to feed the giraffe. B. Film Buffs’ Tour #1 Courtesy Mendocino Coast Chamber of Commerce The natural beauty that draws today’s visitors to the coast has also been a magnet for the movie and television industry from their earliest days. That strong connection sparked the creation of the highly regarded Mendocino Film Festival, which celebrates its 13th season June 1-3, 2018. Silent films on the Mendocino Coast began in 1904 with “The Sequoia Sempervirens” by the Caspar Lumber Co. and include “In Search of a Hero” in 1925. Use the maps and lists to tour locations in Mendocino and along the coast seen in movies such as “East of Eden” and “The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming” and in television shows such as “Murder, She Wrote.” Movies and television shows with portions filmed in the town of Mendocino and vicinity include: • “Frenchman’s Creek,” 1943. Flora & Gardens The Mendocino Coast’s Mediterranean climate (never too hot or too cold) makes it home to unique tree, shrub and flower species that vary widely from tiny wildflowers and succulents on coastal bluffs to towering redwoods inland. The Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens, located just south of Fort Bragg showcases special collections such as rhododendrons, heaths and heathers and succulents. At the west end of the 47-acre property, there is an outlook, which is a great place to sit and enjoy the ocean, while being protected from the prevailing winds. The Botanical Gardens also grows incredible vegetables, much of which they give to the Fort Bragg Food Bank and partners with the Noyo Chapter of the American Rhododen- dron Society for the annual John Druecker Rhododendron Show, the first weekend of May.
