GRAND MASTER’S REPORT To the Grand Lodge Free and Accepted Masons of Wisconsin; Right Worshipful Deputy Grand Master, Distinguished East, and Brothers All, It is with great pleasure that I stand before you today to report on my activities and share with you some of the reflections from the past year. I am indebted to all of my brothers across the State and their ladies for the kindness that was shown to both Lady Jan and me. I never felt so welcome. You have been true friends and brothers and the outpouring of your love is a great inspiration to me. Thank you for all of your generosity and kindness. There are little things in life that interrupt our normal routine and activities. We make a slight adjustment or correction and move on. Then there are the earthquake events that literally shake our foundation to the point of almost complete collapse. In March of 2020 when PGM Strader put all Masonic activity on hold, I absolutely had no idea as to the extent of what was going to happen or the damage that would be felt within our beloved craft. Little did we know that the effects of this virus for almost the better part of a year would still be lurking around and without being careful, can still be deadly. In spite of the pandemic, my brothers, you found a way to continue our work. Meeting in-person was not an option. Thank goodness for technology and for your ingenuity. It was obvious that we were going to enter into a new era which would literally shake the foundation of everything we held dear as Masons and in our lives. The year started out with a virtual Annual Communication. It was a path of safety taken by many of the jurisdictions 23around us. We are lucky to have a knowledgeable Grand Secretary who was able to make the Annual Communication take place virtually which also included voting. The entire Annual Communication was held at the Grand Masonic Center in Dousman Wisconsin on Friday morning. It was at that time that you put your trust in me to lead our great Fraternity. There were ups and downs, but I hope I have met your expectations. Little did I know that it would not be business as usual for more than a year. I bow to you for not being discouraged but for finding a way to eliminate this roadblock and turn it into nothing more than an annoying speed bump. We were able to keep in contact with our brothers and still maintain our safety while the virus was raging. Your work with wellness committees to contact brothers and lodge widows showed us a new horizon. We started to reacquaint ourselves with some forgotten brothers through the development of Wellness Committees. We kept up with the routine of having lodge meetings even though it was more informal and only lacked in anything that was esoteric in nature. My first official act was to get lodges meeting. At this time lodges could return to meeting only if the Master of the lodge chose to do so. No lodge was required to meet, and no member was required to attend a lodge that was meeting in person. There were many restrictions which included working in the first degree only. It wasn’t until much later that performing degrees could be attempted safely and only in the EA degree. Changes in activities to keep safe from getting sick were coming quickly as our medical people understood more about the virus. Gradually, the guidelines became more relaxed. During this period, I held Badger updates to keep all informed about modifications in restrictions and how these modifications effected the operation of the lodge. Working in the first degree proved to be a blessing that opened up some new horizons for lodges. For lodges with fewer members attending, it was difficult to open so that work could be done in the first degree. However, many lodges saw a resurgence of attendees and interest from having the newer members at the stated meetings. There will be one or more resolutions before you today which would allow lodge business meetings in any degree depending on the decision of the Master. I feel this will have a very positive effect on lodge attendance, officer selection, and input from younger members because of new and different ideas coming from newer members sitting in the lodge meetings. I am a strong advocate of moving in this direction. Working in the EA degree also promotes the learning of additional parts of the 3
ritual and enabled our lodges to become more proficient. The resolutions that will come before you today promote flexibility so that all of our lodges can meet and carry-on business in any degree. This will be a great step into the future. The pandemic did not limit men from knocking on our door. Although not record setting, the lodges still managed to initiate 135 new members since last September which is an eight-month period, and there are still many who have been elected and not initiated. I believe the pandemic awoke some good men to realize that there is more to life and caused them to take a hard look at what we have to offer to make their lives complete. The candidates were piling up and the lodges needed to get back to work. With advice and help from PGM MW Brother Humphrey and Grand Lecturer W. Brother Pat Cholka, a plan to start conferring the EA degree safely was put together and tested. There was much confusion, but by the end of Summer/early Fall the lodges were safely performing EA degrees. A few months later the lodges had the go ahead to perform FC degrees under the same EA degree restrictions. As of today, with Covid cases falling and because of the vaccine, Wisconsin Masonry is open for doing all degrees. It was a long stretch, but the lodges had the patience and perseverance to take it slow in meeting, in serving food, in masking, etc. As a jurisdiction all Wisconsin Masons did their best to keep the wheels of our great Fraternity moving safely. I am convinced that we were all successful in keeping Masonry in Wisconsin alive under some very strict circumstances. Keeping up with technology was not only happening in the lodges with virtual meetings. The membership committee and technology team is going to introduce to you today the new Wisconsin Grand Lodge website which was developed this year. Take some time in one of today’s breakout sessions to learn about it. My thanks and gratitude go out to W. Brother Tom Stevens and W. Brother Mike Burnham who have led the teams to get this off the ground. The website contains many tools in its toolbox such as membership leads, access to educational programs, and many more tools too numerous for me to list here. The membership committee under the leadership of W. Brother Mike Burnham has set a very direct high-level path of taking strangers, turning them into visitors some of which will opt in to later become candidates which become our brothers. This is a very high-level description of the path laid out, but with digging down into the details it becomes a full- fledged way to let the public know that we exist. I have a special thank you to our District Deputy Grand Masters and their leadership teams of Area Administrators and District Lecturers. One of their main tasks was to try and keep the lines of communication open with the Wellness Committees of the lodges. When they did their report-outs at the Spring staff meeting, many of them were able to confirm that Wellness Committees were active in most lodges. The team of DDGMs under the direction of chairman W. Brother Earl Gunderson revised the LEA for 2020 to reflect leadership efforts from the lodge in spite of limited activity because of COVID. The temporary COVID LEA targeted the task of having Wellness Committees as a top priority. There is a new planning guide coming out for this year to help the lodges get rolling. I also commend our DDGMs for making visitations when lodges were meeting during this period of uncertainty and for attending video conference meetings. These brothers are the workhorses of Wisconsin leadership and should be recognized for that. Our Fraternity would not be needed if it was not because of the ritual. Otherwise, we would be no more than a service organization. When performing degrees our District Lecturers have done well in working with the lodges in spite of being limited to only teaching in the EA degree. They adapted to this situation, and I feel they did it well. Their work under the direction of the Grand Lecturer helped keep the ritual alive in the hearts of our brothers. Our Grand Lecturer, W. Brother Pat Cholka, is an outstanding model of this position. He is well versed on the ritual and being in the quality profession, is very detailed oriented and does not succumb to making snap decisions. He studies and looks into reference material to draw an opinion and always seeks out the opinion of others. Because of his efforts of many hours of work, our Pure Work and Multiple Lettered cipher agree in content and small error such as typos have been eliminated. He is one of the finest Grand Lecturers and ritualists that I have ever seen, and I thank him for all of his efforts. This year our Education committee chaired by W. Brother Jerry Reick developed and delivered an outstanding virtual Masonic Academy. I received a testimonial about the Academy from a brother that had EAs viewing it. He was delighted to see the amount of knowledge about the fraternity that was covered so that our Entered Apprentices increase and improved their knowledge base about our beloved craft. It met its goal of targeting increasing the knowledge of our new EAs who were able to attend. Thank you to brothers Jerry Reick, Chris Luedke, Barry Axelrood, Ray Mielke, Frank McKenna, Adam Witt, Bob Roth, and Pat Cholka for a job well done. 4
My travel this year has been limited to attending and lodges within our jurisdiction. During June and July many lodge events and organizational meetings were cancelled or were changed to being virtual. Three of the four Grand Lodge officer staff meetings were converted to virtual. It worked well and saved money on the budget, but it did lack in the fellowship and in developing the relationships that are extremely important in our Fraternity. When things started opening up, it was great to attend special events at some of the lodges. Much of my travel whether in-person or virtual is listed in my travel report, but there are a few items which I would like to note. I was honored to present posthumously the Grand Master’s Meritorious Service Award to Lady Deanna the widow of the late W. Brother Jerry McDonald for his service to the Craft. W. Brother Jerry passed away in a very unfortunate motorcycle accident. He was an outstanding brother and will be remembered. I was honored to be able to do the presentation. The Commandery is the Christian side of Masonry and in December it was an honor to be asked to make a Grand Master’s Christmas address to Ivanhoe Commandery and to Robert Macoy Commandery. The presentations were done virtually, but I felt that the message was appreciated as part of a Commandery celebration. It was a pleasure for Lady Jan and I to travel again and enjoy the fellowship of working with Henry S. Baird Lodge at the annual Steamboat Dinner. Over 1300 meals were served covering deliveries to several counties, including a boat trip over the water to Washington Island in Door County. A huge thank you to Tom Pinney and Ed Klein for arranging an enjoyable weekend of a labor of love. The beehive of activity to prepare and deliver the food was outstanding as the duties and assignments were orchestrated under the guidance of Tom’s son Geoff. Thanks to the whole team for making this a special day. The Steamboat Dinner is a true example of what our Craft is about and demonstrates how the community at large benefits from being the output of these labors. I was able to virtually represent Wisconsin at the Midwest Conference of Grand Lodges and report about the activities and strategic plans for Wisconsin. It was interesting to listen to the reports of neighboring jurisdictions and I am proud to say that we are a very progressive jurisdiction and can stand tall with our neighboring brothers. The North American Conference of Grand Masters was also virtual and I was happy to serve as vice chairman of the time and place committee. In January, I sent out a communication to the membership asking all to reinforce their Masonic responsibilities to our nation state as set out in our Pure Work. Unfortunately. there was some misunderstanding, but the vast majority of the Craft saw it as a simple reminder that we are all patriots, and our Obligations must circumscribe our actions, always. In February, Lady Jan and I went on the road or rather in the air to visit our distant brothers in Florida. The attendance at the luncheons was down, but the fellowship was at an all-time high. It was great to meet with our distant brothers and let them know what is going on Wisconsin and to hear the stories of their experiences as part of the Craft. They were happy to see us and made us feel very welcome. During the visit in Sarasota Florida, Brother Al Kreuger felt I needed some help with my golf game. He came to that conclusion from one of my articles in the Wisconsin Masonic Journal. I was taken aback by a beautiful putter which he had handcrafted out of various hardwoods and presented to me. I will be testing it out this summer. Much work has been done on the renamed Wisconsin Masonic Center. The new board under the leadership and energy of W. Brother Tom Ewald is basically returning the historical monument to the dignity and beauty it deserves. The assessment money given over the last few years has helped with some of this work and was needed to cover some of the repair costs. Emergency repairs were needed and with the help of a Grand Lodge grant the work to make the structure safe was commenced and should be shortly completed. Take a short tour around the center to see the transformation. This afternoon Brother Tom will have a very inclusive report and presentation for us. You can be proud of this monument that stands to represent Wisconsin Masonry. Of course, I must always mention the Grand Master’s Appeal. My brothers, you have answered the call for food insecurity above and beyond the call of duty. You gave from your heart and just a few minutes ago, you saw the results of your generosity. I cannot thank you enough. I was also happy to represent you in the groundbreaking ceremony of the new addition to the Beja Shrine building. This will be the new home for many lodges in the area, Scottish Rite Valley of Green Bay, and other appendant bodies. It is a wonderful symbol of unity among our different organizations. This new addition will be taking the place of the old Masonic Center which has been sold. 5
A few days before the Beja groundbreaking, I was honored to participate in the groundbreaking of the new health care center at Three Pillars. This new modern HCC will enable Three Pillars to offer the residents a modern updated facility which will be better to suit their needs. Three Pillars is the premier charity of our Craft. It is a dynamic facility dedicated to giving comfort and compassion to those looking for a place to enjoy the golden years of life. It is a five-star home which keeps the residents comfortable and safe. COVID infections among the residents are non-existent. Being quarantined was difficult for many of the residents, but the Three Pillars staff worked very hard and was very compassionate to help alleviate some of the loneliness. I am proud to be able to serve on the Home Board of Three Pillars and have the opportunity to work with many talented people. Our charity is in good hands. Our great Fraternity will face new challenges as it moves into the future. We live in a very different world and many of these challenges are at our doorstep today. It is our duty to be able to address them with the justice and dignity that we as Masons must do. When it comes to membership in our lodges, it is always best to follow the processes that have been laid down over the years regarding the interviewing process and candidate reception. Follow the ritual as laid out in the cipher to the letter without varying from the ancient establish usage. Strictly following the rules of the Fraternity might put us in an uncomfortable position at the time, but we will never regret doing the right thing. Temperance, fortitude, prudence and justice should always prevail not only when in the lodge, but also when out in public. Everything we need to know and practice to convince the world of the good effects of our Fraternity is right there in front of us in the ritual. Knowing the words and saying them is not enough, embedding them in our hearts is the true path to making a better version of ourselves and a solid foundation for which our beloved Craft can build. A new year without all the restrictions is upon us. Let’s go back to our lodges and show our Brother Masons and communities that we are made of the right stuff. There is no time like the present to get our wheels moving in the direction of making Masons. When members are added to our roles, let us take the time to satisfy their search for something more in life. Let us honor their quest for knowledge. Our beloved Fraternity has the respect and admiration of the world and there are many men, old and new out there that are mature enough to be a part of us. As the late Governor of Wisconsin and brother Lee Sherman Dreyfuss encouraged us, this is no time to say it is high twelve and there is no work laid out for us. My brothers there is much work on the Trestleboard. Let us continue with our labors and finish building the temple. Thank you, my brothers, for your kindness, generosity, and support during the year and allowing me to be in your service. Your inspiration to keep going and not let any pandemic stop you or stand in your way is a sign of fortitude. I am looking forward, not to rest, but to return to the place from whence I came to share labor and fellowship with my lodge brothers. In closing I ask you to always remember that you were first prepared to be made a Mason in your heart. Kenneth C. Since being duly elected and “somewhat” installed as your Deputy Grand Master, it’s been a challenging year to represent you with the COVID-19 pandemic. Most, if not all, of interactions this year have been virtual either via Zoom meetings or via phone. I have definitely missed the physical interaction of meeting with brothers face-to- face and in person. There’s something about a handshake, or a hug, or a big smile that can’t be replicated via Zoom or over the phone. Because of this situation, I’ve had the opportunity to make lots of Wellness Calls to brothers all over the state and a few outside of the state. Zoom provided me the chance to visit individual lodge meetings and put a face to a 13
name for brothers I had not met before. Many district meetings were held via Zoom across the state and I was fortunate to attend many of those. I observed a variety of formats of those meetings and gained invaluable insight. Being unable to have the Midwest Conference of Grand Masters and Secretaries, and the Conference of Grand Masters of North America in person, I was disappointed but they still went on with Zoom with much success. It resulted in a one-day event rather than stretching over several days. We all saved money on mileage expenses and wear-and-tear on our suits! I had my first “coming out” meeting with face-to-face contact when I attended the Hancock Lodge #229 in March. Our Grand Master Ken Gorgen and Minnesota’s Grand Master Ethan Seaberg met together in the Ellsworth, WI lodge to celebrate fraternal camaraderie. It was only the second time in history that the two state Grand Masters met in their lodge. It was wonderful to fraternize with the brothers. Your Grand Lodge officers are tasked with multiple duties throughout the year. In my case, during this Masonic Year, I have served as a member of the Executive Committee, Strategic Planning Committee, Expenditures Committee, and I chaired the Nominations Committee. I have also been a member of the Wisconsin Masonic Benevolent Activities Board (WMBAB), the Wisconsin Masonic Home Board and related Home Board Committees, and the Wisconsin Masonic Journal Board. I want to thank the members of these committees for their diligent work for the good of the Fraternity. Even though all of these committee meetings and work were not completed in person but rather via Zoom, much work was done to accomplish the tasks set before us. I want to thank the Grand Lodge staff for all of their support and assistance in completing not only my duties, but the help they gave to all of the Brothers that called to get help during this very difficult past year with the pandemic. This pandemic year has reminded me of the importance of Brotherly Love and how necessary it is to reach out and “touch” our Brothers. We couldn’t do it in person this year but it was so terribly needed to “touch” them with words and phone calls. I look forward to serving you in the future and extending Brotherly Love to you! Love ‘ya, Brothers, Gary L. Stang Deputy Grand Master SENIOR GRAND WARDEN REPORT To the Grand Lodge Free and Accepted Masons of Wisconsin; My Brothers, there is a ton of talent in Wisconsin Freemasonry! My largest focus this year was to make sure that all the various Boards and Committees were staffed with the best of our best. It is amazing how much talent we have! If I go back to my Membership Committee days, I always said that we have the “commercial” we just need to make people aware that we are here. It is time to make that happen. You will see, during your review of the budget, that the Expenditures Committee has allocated $75,000 specifically to Membership this next Masonic Year. We should all be excited to see that group of talent on the Membership Committee continue to work as they help us make the “Good Men” of Wisconsin aware that we are here and relevant. Your Strategic Planning Committee has agreed to make this a multiyear commitment!! We have the “commercial”, we have the talent, it is time to make others aware that we are still here and relevant. When you serve this great craft as the Senior Grand Warden, the “chips” start to get real. I appreciate your confidence in me and am looking forward to the future of our Fraternity in Wisconsin. The work that was done this year by the Nominations, Expenditures, and Strategic Planning Committees will pay off handsomely for us in the many years to come. I am also excited to see the significant refresh and expansion of our largest Charity, The Wisconsin Masonic Home dba III Pillars Senior Living Communities. The III Pillars Committees and Board of Directors have thoroughly evaluated and planned to ensure these projects are a success. You should be extremely proud, as a Wisconsin Freemason, of III 14
Pillars Senior Living Communities. It is truly a “Badge of Honor” for us, and it positively impacts thousands of residents, patients, employees, and Masonic family members throughout the entire State. The Wisconsin Masonic Foundation continues to serve as a significant and very active Charitable arm for our Fraternity in Wisconsin. This year they continued to reach out throughout the entire State with Scholarships, Defibrillators, CPR kits, and many other Acts of Kindness. What a great entity. Please remember your Wisconsin Masonic Foundation in your charitable giving. MWGM Ken’s Grand Master’s Appeal this year blew out all expectations! Thank You!! The Wisconsin Masonic Foundation is the arm that manages this incredible giving. Huge Impact! On a personal note, I am happy to report that Gavin, Gaige, and Gaiden, after 3 years with us, were successfully reunited with their Father this past June. Kelli & I continue to be thrilled that we are still a major part of their lives, talking to or seeing them at least weekly. What a great experience that I continue to be very thankful for. Additionally, we were blessed in late October with the arrival of Harper, a 15-month-old toddler. She is amazing! We are not sure how long she will be with us as most Foster Parents know but, we are cherishing every day and remain appreciative that she was brought into our lives. My brothers, there is no doubt our fraternity has enabled me to do this. Period. I am thankful for a lot of things in my life, especially this Fraternity. The teachings I get from our work and from you are invaluable. I use them every day. Thank you. Respectfully submitted, Paul T. Tourville, Senior Grand Warden Grand Lodge of Free & Accepted Masons of Wisconsin JUNIOR GRAND WARDEN’S REPORT To the Grand Lodge Free and Accepted Masons of Wisconsin; My brothers I thank you for the honor of being elected to serve our gentle craft in the capacity of Junior Grand Warden. This year I have worked to serve you on the following boards and committees: Grand Lodge Executive Committee Wisconsin Benevolent Activities Board Grand Lodge Expenditures Committee Masonic Home Board- Three Pillars Grand Lodge Strategic Planning Committee Fraternal Relations with Prince Hall Wisconsin Masonic Foundation Youth Funding Committee United Masonic Board for DeMolay Grand Lodge Liaison to all Youth Groups Wisconsin Masonic Journal Board Various committees with Three Pillars Owing to the difficulties and trials of 2020 all of these meetings were attended digitally. While digital meetings lack the warmth and personal feel of in person meetings, meeting digitally has allowed me to meet with many of the brothers throughout the year. Digital meetings have allowed multiple meetings in a single day where before travel time would only allow one. Digital meetings have also provided a way for me to attend or take part in District meetings and lodge meetings all over the state. Meeting digitally has also provided the opportunity of meeting on a more social level, through activities like the “Nine O’clock Toast” with brothers not only in Wisconsin but around the world. I also had the privilege of attending both the Midwest Conference of Grand Masters and The North American Conference of Grand Masters digitally. I would like to thank the Junior Wardens of the lodges that sent a report on their lodge’s Youth activities. With many lodges not meeting and many of the organizations and activities for the young suspended or dramatically changed, it was a pleasure to see many lodges still reaching out. A common theme in the reports was that the lodge did less than in past years but individual brothers had stepped up in groups like scouting or FFA. There were also a number of lodges that included helping or funding schools and teachers during this time of “remote learning.” The Masonic Youth groups continued to provide inspiration with their optimism and energy. Meeting both in person and digitally, both the youth of DeMolay and Job’s Daughters showed creativity and ingenuity in putting on activities and meeting. Adult leadership in Job’s Daughters brought up some issues that were addressed. The young men and ladies of our youth groups continue to impress with their manner and abilities. My brothers, Thank-you for the privilege of serving you and your lodges of this great jurisdiction. Your kind words and actions have meant so much in the past and even more this year. 15
Fraternally and Respectfully Submitted David R. Ritchie Junior Grand Warden 2020-2021 GRAND TREASURER’S REPORT To the Grand Lodge Free and Accepted Masons of Wisconsin; Complying with Section 24.02 and 34.02 of the Wisconsin Masonic Code, Laws of the Grand Lodge, I hereby submit the Grand Treasurer’s Annual Report: At the time of writing this report, 32 lodges are delinquent in filing their Annual Financial Statements. The data requested is necessary for the Grand Lodge to file the required IRS tax forms on your behalf. If they are not filed with Grand Lodge, the lodge will have the responsibility of filing their IRS Form 990. Additionally, 29 lodges have not yet paid their per capita contributions. Section 31.03 of the Wisconsin Masonic Code provides for both of these items to be completed on or before March 1 of each year. Within the same section, penalties are outlined. We ask for your cooperation in completing these requirements. Should you have a specific hardship or issue in meeting these obligations we ask that you contact the Grand Secretary or Grand Treasurer. Our Independent Auditors, CliftonLarsonAllen will audit the financial condition of the Grand Lodge Free and Accepted Masons of Wisconsin, which comprise the statements of financial position as of April 30, 2021 and 2020, the related statements of activities and cash flows for the fiscal years then ended, and the notes to the financial statements. Once presented and accepted by the Executive and Expenditures Committees, the audit report, in full detail, will be on file in the Grand Lodge office for review by any member of the craft. Also, the audit report will be printed in the official proceedings of this 177th Annual Communication of the Grand Lodge Free and Accepted Masons of Wisconsin. The budget format that will be presented at Annual Communication has been upgraded and amended to better track the sources and uses of the funds for Grand Lodge. This year, the budget presentation includes the Fiscal 2017 through Fiscal 2020 actuals, Fiscal 2021 budget together with the proposed Fiscal 2022 budget. As we move forward, we will be able to include additional previous year data to expand the historical comparisons. Notably, our ability to provide a much more comprehensive report incorporating all Grand Lodge activities with functional subsets allow true consistent comparisons. Following the close of our Fiscal Year our annual audit will begin, providing all the closing fiscal year financial details. Working with the Deputy Grand Master, the proposed Fiscal 2021 budget has been developed and will be presented at the Annual Communication for adoption. The Fiscal 2021 budget includes a $2.00 increase in the per capita to $47.00. Following a pause last year due to Covid-19, your support in supporting the annual increases has been making a positive impact on our ability to maintain and improve our programs, as well as support to the lodges. As a result, the reliance on our investment portfolios has been reduced, which extends our financial viability into the future. I have stated before, at a minimum, annual per capita increases should be indexed to CPI-U to avoid the adverse consequences of delaying necessary increases to maintain our standard of business. Building efficiencies, evaluating costs, designing effective programs and having better reporting systems have all contributed to our ability to better align our income and expenses. We have made significant progress in our fiscal management and remain committed to continue to make additional gains so that we can deliver the quality programs, organizational support and necessary services to the craft. In compliance with Section 24.01 of the Wisconsin Masonic Code, mileage and per diem payments for the representatives attending the 177st Annual Communication of the Grand Lodge Free and Accepted Masons of Wisconsin will be computed by the Grand Secretary. In conformity to Section 30.06 of the Wisconsin Masonic Code, these payments will be made via ACH following the Annual Communication to all Lodges with an attendance record that has been properly scanned both days. I hope the financial reports and budget information provide you with a more comprehensive and easier to understand summary of the Grand Lodge financial results. Sincerely and Fraternally, Jeffrey L. Bryden, Grand Treasurer 16

Grand Lodge Master Insurance Policy The Grand Lodge has recently completed the process of reviewing its insurance contracts for the 2021-22 contract period. With the assistance of our insurance broker, Spectrum Insurance Group, renewal terms were reached with our insurance partner West Bend Mutual. While our insurance program structure will not be changing for the next contract year, unfavorable claim experience over the last two years in particular is contributing to rate increases, primarily for those that own their own lodge buildings. Each individual lodge premium may increase or decrease depending property values and lodge member count. Once again, West Bend is offering the option for all lodges to insure property insurance coverage at “Actual Cash Value” as compared to current “Replacement Cost Valuation.” This option was explained at a previous Secretary’s conference. If you have a lodge building presently insured for replacement cost and your lodge would NOT rebuild to similar specifications but rather would settle for insurance payments calculated at the depreciated or “Actual Cash Value” of your lodge property, you are encouraged to contact our insurance broker, Jesse Furrer from Spectrum Insurance Group. Note this decision is not to be taken lightly and should have the full support of lodge members before proceeding. West Bend continues to demonstrate their commitment to our fraternity and have been fair with their pricing. It is important for all lodges to retain a positive working relationship with all parties in order to maintain the integrity of our 18
insurance program. Further, it is critical to keep our lodge buildings in good repair. We are all tasked to be diligent in our efforts to keep pipes unfrozen, sidewalks free of ice and snow, roofs and gutters free of debris, and heating/cooling systems in proper working order. Please keep in close contact with our insurance broker, Spectrum Insurance Group, should your lodge need assistance with any risk management or insurance related issues. This year I met with the underwriters at West Bend along with our Representative Jesse Furrer of Spectrum. It was a productive meeting. We all came away feeling good about the direction our program is headed. The underwriters expressed their thanks to all of our members for the manner in which we conduct our business. The Grand Lodge property and casualty insurance program is designed to meet the unique needs of our fraternal activities. A complete copy of the insurance contract can be reviewed by contacting The Grand Lodge offices for an appointment. Important coverage includes: • Extensive liability insurance limits. • Hired and non-owned auto liability coverage for those operating their own personal autos for lodge purposes. This protects the lodge secondary to any personal auto coverage. • Special events coverage for various lodge activities. • Crime coverage including forgery/alteration and theft of monies from lodge buildings. • Extensive property coverage for lodge buildings, contents, and degree paraphernalia. • Directors and Officers liability insurance for all lodges and members. Building values for those participating in the property portion of the insurance program have been increased by 4% to account for inflation which will have an affect on property premiums. If your lodge would like Spectrum to offer a building valuation estimate, please contact our agent Jesse Furrer at (715) 803-6662. Square Store We are now in the fourth year of our Masonic Square Store. Our site handles all supply sales as well as items of general membership interest from personalized lodge shirts to padfolios. Please take a minute and stop at our display in the parlor. You can look at some samples and even place orders while you are at the Annual Meeting. Conclusion: Brethren, the consequences of living the midst of a pandemic have had an impact on our gentle Craft. We have had to limit our in-person gatherings and delay or postpone degree work. Probably the most significant is that we cannot eat together. Food is the one great ‘bonding agent’ of Masons. On the positive side, we have learned new ways of sharing the fraternal experience when we cannot meet face to face. Livestreams have proven effective in keeping the fraternal candle burning. The Pandemic has caused us to return to our roots and take care of our brethren. When we have a chance to step back and look objectively at the past year, I believe we will find that the Fraternity has become stronger, we are looking at exciting way to keep our membership engaged and finely it has caused us to do what the fraternity is supposed to do…look after one another and our families. I express to you my gratitude for the confidence reposed, all courtesies extended, cooperation accorded, and friendships cemented. I offer you my continued support and offer assistance whenever needed. I remain, Sincerely and fraternally Michael A. DeWolf, P.G.M. Grand Secretary 19
GRAND LODGE TRUSTEE’S REPORT To the Grand Lodge Free and Accepted Masons of Wisconsin: Most Worshipful Grand Master of Masons in Wisconsin, Brother Kenneth C. Gorgen, Grand Lodge Officers, Past Grand Masters, and delegates to the 177th Annual Communication of the Grand Lodge Free and Accepted Masons of Wisconsin: Chapter 28 of the Masonic Code of Wisconsin requires the Grand Trustees to submit to the Grand Lodge at each Annual Communication a report on their official acts. This is our report for the fiscal year ending April 30, 2021. The State Statutes of Wisconsin and the Wisconsin Masonic Code, with annotations, delineate the number of and qualifications of Grand Trustees, their election and tenure, vacancies, custody of securities, annual report, and supervision of property requirements. There are five (5) Grand Trustees of the Grand Lodge, each elected to a single five (5) year term, with one (1) elected at each Annual Communication, who shall not be eligible for reelection to such office for a successive term. A Grand Lodge Trustee is a statutory, not a Masonic officer. Chapter 188 of the Wisconsin State Statutes, as it relates to Masonry, vests title in the Grand Trustees all real and personal property that shall have been conveyed by devise, gift, grant, purchase, or otherwise to the society (fraternity). Pursuant to Chapter 188 of the Wisconsin State Statutes, and Chapter 28 of the Wisconsin Masonic Code, and other references, the Grand Trustees have legal custody of all bonds, obligations, and securities, and legal title to all real estate. The Grand Trustees exercise a general supervision over the property, both real and personal, including trust funds of the Wisconsin Grand Lodge, unless otherwise provided by regulation of the Grand Lodge. The Grand Trustees are governed by the “prudent man” rule for the investment of funds of the Grand Lodge. During the 2020-2021 Masonic year, the Grand Trustees met and communicated numerous times, in person, by telephone, by video conferences, and with emails. In addition to determining policies, goals, and objectives by reaching a consensus, we also manage several leases held by us for property of the Wisconsin Grand Lodge. Investments Our fiscal year is from May 1 to April 30. Associated Bank and Trust Company, N.A. is our depository for the Grand Lodge of Wisconsin investment accounts. The Grand Trustees have retained Associated Bank and Trust to provide advice on investments and to be the investment managers for the various Grand Lodge accounts. Grand Lodge Investments in Marketable Securities: As previously noted, the Grand Trustees oversee Grand Lodge investments. The investment policy adopted by the Grand Trustees on June 1, 2018 provides for a target for marketable securities of 40% - 75% equities, 25% - 60% fixed income, and 0% - 20% alternative assets. At the end of the previous fiscal year, April 30, 2020, the Grand Lodge’s total marketable securities investments were $13,436,216.21. On April 30, 2021, those assets had a value of $19,753,654.25. *It should be noted here that part of the increase in value came from the sale of approximately 175 acres of the Grand Lodge’s farmland to Three Pillars Development for $2,309,316.72. Of the $19,753,654.25 combined total in investment assets, the general funds consist of the General Account, Service and Assistance Account, and Youth Account, totaling $16,088,903.01, which are unrestricted funds for use by the Grand Lodge. The restricted funds, both permanently and temporarily, consist of the PMP Account and the Van Brunt Account, totaling $3,664,751.24. During the past year, the Grand Trustees reviewed the various accounts and it is the Grand Trustees’ position that the Youth Account was created from the General Account of the Grand Lodge for specific items that were previously budgeted for. As required by the Wisconsin Masonic Code, we are to report annually on the financial activity in the PMP Account. On April 30, 2020, the Total Market Value of this account was $1,485,407.89. The Total Market Value as of April 30, 2021 was $1,818,708.74. This account continues to be marginally funded and will slowly decline as the annual payments from the account outpace the annual investment returns. These PMP Account assets are included in the total investments stated above. 20
