Ahmad, LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS Cardiff University Most Canadian nationals will automatically meet English language requirements, especially if they are native English speakers and/or have been primarily taught in English. Students from Quebec may be required to take IELTS exams. If you hold a passport from a country that does not have English as its primary language, you may also be required to take IELTS exams. Your advisor will be able to assist you and work with the universities that you apply to in order to determine your particular requirements. APPLICATION DEADLINES Most programs will accept applications through June for an autumn start; however, we recommend applying by mid-January. Admissions in the UK is on a rolling basis so the earlier you apply, the greater chances you will have of receiving an offer. You will also have more opportunities to apply for different scholarships. The main exceptions are veterinary and medical studies as these have a 15 October deadline. Some of the more competitive law programs have a 15 January deadline (though not all!). Most professional health programs such as master’s in physiotherapy, occupational therapy or psychology will operate unique deadlines. These vary by university so be sure to check with your advisor! “ City is located in the heart of London, which meant I would not only get to live in one of the most central areas in London but I would also get the opportunity to travel around Europe easily. Heena, City, University of London DEGREE PROGRAMS There are several types of degree programs in the UK: Foundation, Bachelor’s, LLB (Law), Master’s, and Doctorates or PhDs; all of which are all globally recognized qualifications. We are able to assist you with applications to any of these degree types! UNDERGRADUATE DEGREE PROGRAMS UK degrees tend to focus on the main degree subject from the beginning of the degree program and thus are more professionally oriented than the North American liberal arts education, which requires each student to learn a broader curriculum. For students who have a clear idea of what they want to study, a British degree is ideal as you are allowed to specialize in your subject area from the start. For undergraduate degrees, you can choose either a 3-year undergraduate degree in England and Wales and graduate with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) or Bachelor of Science “ Studying in the UK is an amazing experience; the research environ- ment here is excellent providing you with op- portunities to work with different researchers to explore new frontiers of science. If you choose to study in Scotland, you can study and graduate with an MA (Master of Arts) or MSc (Master of Science) degree after 4 years. These are still undergraduate degrees in Scotland as opposed to graduate degrees and are not equivalent to a master’s degree you would take in England, Wales or North America. POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMS At the postgraduate level you have a choice between a taught or research-based Master’s degree or a PhD. “ British taught Master’s degrees have a structure that is similar to Canadian Master’s pro- grams; however, the British version is arguably a bit more professionally oriented and can be completed in just 12 months, compared to the usual 2 years needed in North Amer- ica, thus saving you time and money. Ph.D programs are typically 3 years long when studied full time. • The Taught Master’s, often called an MA (England and Wales), MLitt (Scotland) or an MSc, takes 12 months and is very popular with North American students. It follows the same structure of classroom work and some research that you would expect from a de- gree at home, but is more focused and thus shorter. In terms of recognition it is the same as a North American degree, but you save a year! Some universities also guarantee housing for the entirety of the degree. Student housing in the UK is called halls of residence. We recommend stay- ing there for your first year to get to know both the university and your fellow students. It is most common to have your own private room. Universities can also help you find a private residence. Be aware that you will have to pay for power, a telephone, TV, internet and the like in addition to private accommodation costs, whereas much of this will be covered in university accommodation. “I was really excited to come and study in the UK, as I wanted to build my BA Philosophy and Politics, Illinois, USA academic understanding and a working knowledge of European culture first hand. The University of Essex was my first choice because it is well known for its work in both politics and philosophy. I settled in quickly, especially as my school held a welcome reception for all new students (complete with drinks and a game of pool with our tutors in Top Bar!) and provided us with mentors. Rebecca Hamilton Throughout my time at the University, my academic circle has been outstanding and provided me with guidance, assistance and a path to shaping my academic life here at Essex and beyond.
