Old Man of Storr, Scotland COSTS Most students assume it is extremely expensive to study in the UK, but this is not the case! More often than not, the cost of study is cheaper than in the US. There are many reasons for this, but in general, tuition is cheaper and degree programs are shorter, and these factors together significantly reduce the cost of education. Undergraduate degree programs in England and Wales, and Northern Ireland can be completed in just three years (in Scotland, it still takes four). This not only means that you save on time and money, but you get to start your career or master’s degree sooner! Most Master’s programs are just twelve months of study - again, cutting your fees significantly from a two- or three-year US degree. Tuition fees in the UK are cheaper than most private universities in the US and are on par with many public universities. The higher tuition costs encompass specific laboratory science pro- grams and the MBA; the higher living costs represents the expense of living in London. To read more about the costs of study in the UK, please visit our website. SCHOLARSHIPS Scholarship help is more limited in the UK compared to the US (largely because it is less expensive to study in the UK), and stu- dents need a university offer in order to apply for any scholarships the universities have available. This is why we suggest you apply ASAP! no.studyacrossthepond.com studyacrossthepond.com 14 PUBLISHED 09/2020 AcrossthePondUK AcrossthePondUK 15 company/across-the-pond-usa
Cotswolds, England ACCOMMODATION You have the choice between living in student-organized accommodation or in private housing. With benefits to each, your personal Across the Pond ad- visor will work with you to determine which option is best for you socially and financially. The majority of our partner universities guarantee university-run accommodation for international students during their first year of study, which makes sorting your finances and lodging much easier from home, since you will not have to worry about any extra utility payments, taxes or fees; these are all included in one lump sum paid directly to the university. The cost of living in UK student halls varies and depends on location, the length of your contract, and how new and modern the accommodation is. These varying factors make it difficult to provide an exact overall estimate, but most universities breakdown the cost week-by-week, with prices ranging anywhere from $130-$500 per week. Whatever housing option you choose, you can be confident in the knowledge that you will not be paying for any extras since electricity, water, taxes, and internet costs are all included. If you prefer, you can choose to find private accommodation, but this can be a bit more complicated to arrange long distance, and you will be responsible for not only your rent, but also possibly city taxes and extra bills, like internet fees, depending on where you live and with whom you live. Additionally, many landlords want to meet students in person before leasing their space. Landlords may also require large, upfront deposits, and often you will need a British guarantor and/or a British bank account. This does not mean that living in private accommodation is impossible; it is just a little bit more complicated and time-consuming to arrange. Some of our advisors have lived off-campus during their studies in the UK and are always happy to chat with you if you are considering this option, but ultimately you are responsible for your own living arrangements. no.studyacrossthepond.com studyacrossthepond.com 16 PUBLISHED 09/2020 AcrossthePondUK AcrossthePondUK 17 company/across-the-pond-usa
An unbelievable experience Ever since I could remember I have always wanted to travel to England so I thought I would take the opportunity to study here. I chose Worcester because I wanted the traditional English vibe from the city. Being an international student here is an unbelievable experience. The university provided an international week allowing you to get to know other students, settle in and explore the city. I have even joined one of their societies, which is a good opportunity to meet lots of new people. Living here has also made me very independent, having to buy groceries, do my own laundry and work out my financial budget. The accommodation is very spacious, modern, safe and gave me just a 5 minute walk to class. I really enjoy the modules I am studying. Every module is very hands on and will help me towards my next step in my career. The class sizes are small which means you get to know your fellow students but also your tutors know you by names and Studying in England is sincerely care about how you are doing. Coming from so far away to a totally new country I was afraid I would not make friends, I was worried I would be very lonely, but it almost seems impossible to not find friends. As someone who had never lived in a big city, let alone another country, a campus university was the right choice for me, as I could be in London and still have a community outside my door. Having a campus took away from the stress of having to find my classes, a social life, and other necessary resources, while 3000 miles away from home. The best part of university has been the independence I gained and what came with that. Living on my own, buying my own food, and just making my own decisions was an essential part of my character growth in the past two years. The University of Essex was my first choice because it is well known for its work in both politics and philosophy. I settled in quickly, especially as my school held a welcome reception for all new students (complete with drinks and a game of pool with our tutors in Top Bar!) and provided us with mentors. Rebecca Hamilton Throughout my time at the University, my academic circle has been outstanding and provided me with guidance, assistance and a path to shaping my academic life here at Essex and beyond.
