Your advisor will be able to assist you and work with the universities that you apply to in order to determine your particular requirements. APPLICATION DEADLINES Apply Early! We recommend applying by Mid-January for your best chance at acceptance. Though most programs accept applications until June for an autumn start, application in the UK take place on a rolling basis; that means, the earlier you apply, the greater chance you have of receiving an offer. As well, this leaves plenty of time to get in scholar- ship applications. Certain Undergraduate programs also have strict deadlines; for medicine and veterinary science, the deadline is the 15 October. Some competitive law programs have a 15 January deadline, and the formal deadline for international undergraduate applications is 30 June, though waiting this long could result in programs being full. For Postgraduate programs, more competitive programs like physiotherapy and psychology have unique deadlines from January to June, so make sure to ask your advisor to ensure you meet these! The earlier you apply, the lower the chance of missing a deadline, and the more options you have. Chester, England DEGREE PROGRAMS There are several types of degree programs in the UK: Foundation, Bachelor’s, LLB (Law), Master’s, and Doctorates or PhDs; all of which are all globally recognized qualifications. We are able to assist you with applications to any of these degree types! UNDERGRADUATE DEGREE PROGRAMS UK degrees tend to focus on the main degree subject from the beginning of the degree program and thus are more professionally oriented than the North American liberal arts education, which requires each student to learn a broader curriculum. For students who have a clear idea of what they want to study, a British degree is ideal as you are allowed to specialize in your subject area from the start. For undergraduate degrees, you can choose either a 3-year undergraduate degree in England and Wales and graduate with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) or Bachelor of Science (BSc), or a 4-year sandwich course which includes one year of professional experience in industry or a year study- ing abroad. If you choose to study in Scotland, undergraduate degrees are typically 4 years in line with the Canadian system. Our Scottish partners do still offer 3-year options in many subjects, your advisor will be able to direct you to these if that is a priority for you.” POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMS At the postgraduate level you have a choice between a taught or research-based Master’s degree or a PhD. British taught Master’s degrees have a structure that is similar to Canadian Master’s programs; however, the British version is arguably a bit more professionally oriented and can be completed in just 12 months, compared to the usual 2 years needed in North America, thus saving you time and money. Ph.D programs are typically 3 years long when studied full time. • The Taught Master’s, often called an MA (England and Wales), MLitt (Scotland) or an MSc, takes 12 months and is very popular with North American students. It follows the same structure of classroom work and some research that you would expect from a degree at home, but is more focused and thus shorter. In terms of recognition it is the same as a North American degree, but you save a year! • The Research-based Master’s are degrees that can be called a variety of names including MSc by Research, MRes, and MPhil and are normally based on a research project you undertake rath- er than classes you attend. Research-based Master’s usually involve working closely with a tutor and take around 12-18 months. Many students often begin this type of program and then transfer into a PhD. As with a PhD, in order to apply for a research based Master’s, you must typically submit a research proposal and have a strong academic background along with some research experience in the relevant subject. WHAT CAN YOU STUDY? There are many more study opportunities in the UK than in Canada, and many of our universities are among the very best in the UK in the areas of study offered. If you do not fully know what you want to study, we can help! We’d be happy to make suggestions based upon your academic background and interests. Virtually every academic subject that you can think of will be available in the UK. no.studyacrossthepond.com ca.studyacrossthepond.com 12 PUBLISHED 10/2020 AcrossthePondCanada AcrossthePondCA 13 ATPCanada AcrossthePondCA

The standard LLB is a 3-year program; however, some universities offer Julia a 2-year “graduate entry” or “senior status” LLB for students who have previously completed an undergraduate honours degree. Across the Pond’s expert student advisors have considerable experience in advising candidates on the appropriate options to select according to your academic and professional profile. The degrees offered at our partner universities are recognized internationally. When you return to Canada to start a bar admissions program you must have your UK law degree assessed by the National Committee on Accreditation (NCA) and obtain a Certificate of Qualification. The Challenge Exams will be based on self-study and can be completed at specific times each year. Applying to an MSc Physiotherapy degree in the UK is competitive, Liam but interested applicants should have confidence knowing that their application will be assessed holistically and that they will have the opportunity, and even be expected, to demonstrate their relevant practical experience and understanding of the discipline in addition to their GPA. Each MSc Physiotherapy application is unique and has its own requirements for the personal statement and demonstrating the skills required to be a physiotherapist. Working with an Across the Pond advisor will help ensure that you are highlighting your skills in a manner that will give you your best odds of admission. BSC PHYSIOTHERAPY Students can also apply for a BSc Physiotherapy which would only require an additional year of study at most universities. Students who complete the BSc Physiotherapy in the UK will graduate as a qualified physiotherapist in the UK, obtaining the same qualification as those completing the MSc Physiotherapy. This undergraduate level qualifying degree also provides a great opportunity for younger students who may know right out of high school that they want to pursue a career in physiotherapy. These students would be able to fast-track their career path by pursuing a 3-year BSc Physiotherapy direct out of high school rather than completing 6 years of study back home. Once a student has completed a physiotherapy degree overseas, they will need to register with The Canadian Alliance of Physiotherapy Regulators. We also recommend checking on the registration requirements with the regulating body in the province where you hope to return to practice before beginning your degree. no.studyacrossthepond.com ca.studyacrossthepond.com 16 PUBLISHED 10/2020 AcrossthePondCanada AcrossthePondCA 17 ATPCanada AcrossthePondCA
COSTS Tuition fees for a UK degree range between £13,000 and £23,000 per year, where the average is between £14,000 and £17,000. In addition to the tuition fees mentioned above, you should also consider accommodation and living costs. On-campus accommodation for the first year of studies is guaranteed to Canadian students who apply by the housing deadline. This applies to almost all of the Across the Pond partner universities, whether offering postgraduate programs or undergraduate courses. University halls of residence will cost in the range of £70-£200 per week including all bills. Private sector accommodation will vary depending on the type of accommodation and the area. Total living costs are in the range of £9,000-£11,500 (per year) including accommodation, bills, food, books, transportation and entertainment, though this will differ depending on your individual necessities and lifestyle. Depending on which program you choose to study and where you live, expect your total costs for the year (tuition and living costs) to be around £22,000-£35,000. For most undergraduates studying in Britain, expenses will be at the lower end of this range. LOANS If you meet the eligibility requirements for a Canadian Student Loan, you may use the federal portion to study overseas, which currently equals a maximum of $210 per week of study. Further information about using Student Loans abroad is available on the CanLearn Website. The Canadian Student Loans can be applied for through your province’s student aid provider. Some provinces may have additional provincial funding available for students who are eligible. If you have specific questions about how to apply for a Canadian Student Loan within your province, please contact your advisor. SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES Our advisors also have a full overview of other scholarships that our partners offer to international students, and can help you apply for these. Some of the universities offer scholarship based on academic achievements (grades), some are within certain fields of study and some within the different study types. Scholarships vary in scope and can range from a few hundred pounds per year to thousands of pounds. The average offer will be £1500-2000. Contact your advisor for more information on scholarship opportunities. Several of these scholarships will have application deadlines, some as early as January. Typical deadlines are in Spring (ranging from March to May). Most scholarships will also require you to already have an offer from the university, so it’s wise to apply to universities early. no.studyacrossthepond.com ca.studyacrossthepond.com 18 PUBLISHED 10/2020 AcrossthePondCanada AcrossthePondCA 19 ATPCanada AcrossthePondCA
Cotswolds, England HOUSING As a Canadian student, you are guaranteed housing the first year of your studies if you apply before the deadline at almost every university partner. Some universities also guarantee housing for the entirety of the degree. Student housing in the UK is called halls of residence. We recommend stay- ing there for your first year to get to know both the university and your fellow students. It is most common to have your own private room. Students typically share a kitchen with 6-10 others, but you can often choose if you want your own toilet and your own shower (en-suite) or whether you want to share this as well. Universities can also help you find a private residence. Be aware that you will have to pay for power, a telephone, TV, internet and the like in addition to private accommodation costs, whereas much of this will be covered in university accommodation. In terms of prices, this will vary from university to university and city to city. Prices are usually at £75-100 per week in the most affordable cities. The slightly more expensive cities are at around £100-150 per week, and in London the prices vary between £120-200 per week. Universities also have different application deadlines for housing, so make sure you apply well in advance. If you have certain needs/requirements for your housing, please contact your advisor for assistance. THE ACADEMIC YEAR The academic year for bachelor students usually goes from Late September or early October To May/June, and are divided into two or three semesters. For master’s degrees, students usually attend the academic year from September through September, lasting 12 months. Examination periods are usually in January for the Autumn semester and May/June for the Spring semester, but this varies from university to university. Hard to go back home Coming to the UK has been one of the best decisions I have made. I love it here and will find it hard to go back home. When I first arrived it was daunting, and a little scary, but it quickly became a second home. My first day in York I ended up going out with my housemates to a freshers event and since that day we have become such a close knit group of friends (from several different countries) that I feel so secure in whatever problems might come my way. I would say the only downside of living in the UK is that the cost of living is higher than back home and a little more than I expected. However, if you keep your eye open and find out different options, it’s not too hard to live decently on a decent amount of money. The University has a beautiful campus and being in archaeology I get to have classes in a building once used in Tudor times. The history of York is so amazing, from the Roman walls to the Minster and the Georgian housing, I’m amazed every time I walk through town. Hence a great place to study archaeology.
