I hope that this finds you and your family healthy and safe. The past year has been the most trying the majority of us will face in our lifetime. Kiawah Island Golf Resort has nimbly adapted to be able to continue offering the world-class service, accommodations, amenities and recreational opportunities you have come to expect. Your health and well-being, along with that of our employees, is of paramount importance. In addition to requiring that all guests and employees adhere to the Town of Kiawah Island’s mask ordinance, we continue to take and regularly refine specific steps to safeguard the health of everyone on the island. Anticipation mounts daily as we complete preparations to host the 2021 PGA Championship at The Ocean Course this May. We look forward to witnessing the world’s top golfers test their mettle on this iconic Pete Dye course. We continue to make progress on our expansions. Last year we opened the new West Beach Conference Center and Villa Registration, representing two major milestones. Our culinary team continues to deliver extraordinary cuisine. One new service we offer guests this year is an extensive menu of chef-catered meals that we can either deliver or serve in-person at your Resort Villa or Private Home. The Spa at The Sanctuary has added several new treatments. These truly unique offerings are designed to promote health and vitality, as well as the relaxation and rejuvenation we all welcome. The Heron Park Nature Center has welcomed new arrivals: hatchling alligators. These important young members of our nature program join the other native species that help provide a better understanding of the barrier island we are so fortunate to share with you and with our valued wildlife. Thank you for continuing to be our guest. We look forward to welcoming you back to Kiawah Island Golf Resort in 2021. Roger M. RORY ANTICIPATES 2021 PGA CHAMPIONSHIP In May, Kiawah Island Golf Resort welcomes back the PGA Championship to The Ocean Course. Traditions invited ICONIC 2012 champion Rory McIlroy to share a few thoughts on returning for a second run at the major on the famed by nature Pete Dye course. Traditions: What are some of the notable ways the professional game has changed since 2012, and how do you think that might come to bear on the 2021 PGA Championship? Rory: One change that strikes me most is the incredible depth of ability and talent in every field in recent years. I’ve been on Tour for 13 years now and I definitely feel that a stronger, deeper field is an increasing reality. Simply put, a greater number of capable golfers has come to the fore, proving they can win at the highest level. If I am still the one to beat come May 2021, I will be up against a larger number of realistic contenders than I believe was once the case. I also think I’m happy with that scenario. Traditions: What are your thoughts about returning to The Ocean Course in 2021? Rory: It will also be my own, personal defense, after a nine-year interval, of a title that meant so much to the 23-year-old me. I feel I have evolved and matured as a golfer, so I will be more likely to give more attention to the old nuances and subtle changes made to The Ocean Course in the intervening years. I don’t think I will ever say I have mastered any of Pete Dye’s With five championship courses already courses—I’m just happy to keep learning and taking new experiences from each visit. lush and green under coastal South Carolina’s warm spring sun, Kiawah Island To read this interview in its entirety, please click here to read this interview in its entirety. BARTH-HAWTIN TENNIS ACADEMY NURTURES SUCCESS When the tennis academy at Kiawah Island Golf Resort relaunched as the Barth-Hawtin Tennis Academy in January 2019, its goal was to achieve measurable, sustainable growth and success for highly competitive junior athletes aspiring to play Division I or pro tour tennis. To accomplish this, the Academy adopted a process combining a rigorous training plan with physical development, both highly individualized to each athlete. After two short years, Academy pupils are already reaping the rewards. The most recent class produced three students ROY BARTH who signed on to play varsity tennis at major college programs. Following two months at the Academy, one young student who was ranked too low to qualify for singles tournament play received a last-minute bid after another athlete withdrew. He went on to win four matches to advance to the finals. Another 11-year-old Academy student achieved a national ranking PENS MEMOIR in the 12-year-old category. Late last year, founder of the tennis program If you have or know of a junior tennis player eager to elevate their game in preparation for collegiate or professional play, at Kiawah Island Golf Resort, Roy Barth, who complete the Barth-Hawtin Tennis Academy online registration to begin the process. served the Resort as Director of Tennis for four decades, published his memoir, Point of Impact. The book, brimming with thrilling anecdotes as well as valuable life and tennis tips, traces Barth’s journey from a junior player in Southern California to his role establishing the most successful resort tennis program in the world. For avid sports fans, some of the most compelling stories are reminiscences on his career as an All American at UCLA and his time going toe-to-toe with legends— including Arthur Ashe, Björn Borg and Stan Smith—at such hallowed events as Wimbledon and the U.S. Open during his pro tour. Lifelong friend and tennis great Billie Jean King offers a warm and engaging foreword. WELCOME TO THE WEST BEACH CONFERENCE CENTER Beginning last March, Kiawah Island Golf Resort hosted its first guests in the West Beach Conference Center. The center, which offers more than 23,000 square feet of customizable event and pre-event space, was designed by world-renowned Robert A.M. Stern Architects (RAMSA). At their lowest point, ceilings in the 10,000-square-foot Carolina Ballroom soar over 17 feet to accommodate modern meeting and large-format AV setups. While the elegantly appointed ballroom is vast enough to host a grand chef- prepared banquet or key-note assembly, air-walls allow it to be subdivided in up to six separate spaces for maximum flexibility. Eleven breakout rooms feature oversized windows that usher in ample natural light and open onto stunning views of the island’s natural splendor. The West Beach Conference Center also features under-roof drive-in loading bays to protect valuable meeting assets, ensuring they arrive to their final destination in pristine condition. To learn more about the West Beach Conference Center or to plan your next group event, visit our meetings page. VILLA REGISTRATION We are delighted to present our lovely new Villa Registration—conveniently located at 2 Shipwatch Road—where Resort Villa and Private and Premier Home guests will now be greeted at the beginning of their stay. Just steps from the new conference center and Cougar Point Clubhouse dining and amenities, this enhanced facility offers guests a relaxed and enjoyable registration experience as soon as they arrive on-island. Since the service was introduced, popular menus have included continental breakfasts, plated dinners with wine pairings, small receptions with hors d’oeuvres, casual Lowcountry boils and lunch buffets with sandwiches, salads and soup. “Our culinary team is extremely flexible and happy to work directly with guests to create an individualized dining experience to suit their wishes and number of guests, whether it’s four or twenty,” says Villa Resort Chef Tournant Jeff Cali. TOOTHY BABIES This season is an exciting time to visit Heron Park Nature Center. In addition to having the chance to observe and learn about various species native to Kiawah Island, the Nature Program welcomes new long-term guests—a handful (literally) of six-month-old alligators, Wando and Wappoo, named for two Lowcountry rivers. “It is special to see hatchling alligators this close,” says Kiawah Island Golf Resort Recreation Director Liz King. These toothy babies replace the former resident alligators—now seven years old and making their new home at Alligator Adventure, a reptile refuge in Horry County, South Carolina. In exchange, Alligator Adventure provided Heron Park Nature Center with two captive-bred hatchlings. Maintaining resident alligators is a critical component of the Resort’s hands-on educational program, allowing guests to get an up-close look that would be impossible in the wild. To learn more about Heron Park Nature Center, the Resort’s alligator programming and other opportunities to discover Kiawah Island’s fascinating and vitally important flora and fauna, visit our Nature Program page. KIAWAH ISLAND MARATHON EARLY REGISTRATION Registration is already open for the 43rd Kiawah Island Marathon and Half Marathon. This immensely popular, officially sanctioned Boston Marathon qualifier fills quickly, so don’t miss your chance to compete in this year’s event scheduled for Saturday, December 11.
