Shingles Vaccination
About 90% of the adult population have had chicken pox as a child. The virus
remains in our system under control, however as we age our immune system
weakens and the virus reactivates as Shingles. Often the blistering rash and pain can
be disabling for many people and can affect their daily lives. Long term
complications such as nerve pain (Postherpetic neuralgia or PHN) can last for
months or years.

The National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) recommends that
Shingles vaccine should be offered to adults 50 years and older. The Shingles
vaccine available and can be purchased and administered at your local Sobeys
National Pharmacy. Private insurers may cover all or part of the cost. Ask your
doctor or pharmacist if the Shingles vaccine is right for you.
