MCAULEY SCHOOL OF NURSING TRANSITION CEREMONY MAY 12, 2022 CALIHAN HALL
The Transition Ceremony honors graduate and undergraduate nursing students who have completed requirements for a Bachelors, Master’s or Doctoral degree in nursing. At the Transition Ceremony, undergraduates receive a pin that symbolizes graduation from University of Detroit Mercy, McAuley School of Nursing Baccalaureate program. The Master’s and Doctoral graduates receive a hood which signifies their level of accomplishment at the conferring of degrees.
McAuley School of Nursing Pin The pin symbolizes graduation from University of Detroit Mercy, McAuley School of Nursing. The BSN at the bottom of the inner circle indicates earning a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. The left side of the crest portrays two wolves with a kettle hanging between them, symbolizing the generosity of the Loyola family; (Ignatius Loyola was the founder of the Society of Jesus). After the family and the workers were fed, even the wild animals had the kettle to lick. On the right side of the crest is a silver cross, which is the symbol of the Religious Sisters of Mercy, who founded Mercy College of Detroit in 1941. The three canettes are taken from the arms of the Archdiocese of Detroit, and therefore are symbolic of the Archdiocese and the City. The open book is the traditional symbol for a college. Upon the open pages is inscribed Mercy College’s motto: Maria, Sedes Sapientiae (Mary, Seat of Wisdom).
Mission The mission of the McAuley School of Nursing Program is to prepare competent baccalaureate and graduate level nurses who are committed to serve, lead, provide high quality, cost-effective and culturally sensitive health care services to diverse individuals, families, communities and populations. Congruent with the University’s mission, the program focuses on providing high quality nursing care to the underserved in an urban context. We must have a warm, cordial affection for all and manifest it by words, action and manner. - Catherine McAuley Foundress of the Sisters of Mercy Love is shown more in deeds than in words. - Ignatius of Loyola

Florence Nightingale Pledge I will strive with all my being and with the help of God to continue to become an open, kind, honest and diversified individual. In doing so I will attain the qualities essential in the practice of nursing, for it is only after realizing one’s self-worth we are able to promote that of others. Deliverance of high quality health care is of essential importance, but let us also reach beyond a treatment of diagnosis and remember that entrusted to my care is a human being with all the loves, hates, fears and idiosyncrasies that are an integral part of the human species. I will do all in my power to maintain and elevate the standard of my profession and will hold in confidence all personal matters committed to my keeping and family affairs coming to my knowledge in the practice of my calling. Let me not grow too comfortable in my knowledge but actively seek out information for continuance of my education. Being a nurse requires continuous growth. I dedicate myself to this cause and my life to the profession of nursing.
