BUD ABBOTT: THE FORGOTTEN FUNNYMAN During their quarter of a century together, the comedy team of Bud Abbott (1897–1974) and Lou Costello (1906–1959) conquered the stage, radio, movies, and television. After the untimely death of his comedy partner, Bud retired to his home in Woodland Hills, California. In 1972, Sal St. George had the good fortune of meeting Bud and Betty, his wife of 55 years, in their home. Mr. St. George recently rediscovered his long-lost audiotape of a conversation from that visit, in which Bud fondly reminisced about his life as part of one of America’s Bud Abbott (left) and Lou Costello most beloved comedy teams. During (right) from their NBC Radio the conversation, the elder comedian program in the 1940s reflected on how he met Lou, their movies, Lou’s personal tragedies, why they ended their partnership, plus his own financial and health difficulties after Lou’s passing. Included in this program are notes from interviews with TV pioneer Steve Allen; Patty Andrews of the Andrews Sisters; Glenn Strange, who played Frankenstein’s monster in Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein; comedian Joe Besser, Abbott and Costello’s manager Eddie Sherman; Candy Candido, Bud’s comedy partner after Lou’s passing; and others. For the first time in 40 years, one of Bud Abbott’s last interviews is available for fans to enjoy and study. Location: Little Theatre Date: December 12 (Wednesday); 6:00 pm Cost: $10 per person in advance; $15 per person at the door; reservations required. GEORGIAN COURT UNIVERSITY | 9
History & Law CONSTITUTION DAY COMMEMORATION: GUANTÁNAMO BAY, MILITARY TRIALS & FOREVER PRISONERS “Pick-and-choose patriotism” is how the U.S. government approach to Guantánamo Bay was described by a defense lawyer in the U.S. Military Commissions in Guantánamo Bay, Cuba. Guantánamo Bay is simultaneously within and outside U.S. legal systems, creating what can be understood as “selective constitutionalism,” with the U.S. Constitution inapplicable in certain respects. Marny Requa, J.D., GCU associate professor of criminal justice and homeland security and director of the criminal justice and human rights program, will put a spotlight on Guantánamo Bay. She’ll cover use of the naval base for military detentions since 2002, the position of detainees, and the few cases tried by the commissions. Moderated by Scott H. Bennett, GCU professor of history and chair of the Department of History, Geography, and Political Science, legal and political dilemmas related to the military base will be discussed along with potential alternatives for Guantánamo’s “forever prisoners.” Location: McAuley Heritage Center Date: September 17 (Monday); 6:00 pm Cost: FREE. Tickets must be reserved online in advance; no tickets will be issued at the door. The entrance to Camp 1 in Guantánamo Bay’s Camp Delta 10 | MOSAIC Fall 2018

Hear musical excerpts as you explore the backgrounds of these iconic artists and their music. Lucia di Lammermoor (2011–2012 season). Photo: Tim Wilkerson for The Atlanta Opera/CC BY-SA 3.0 WHAT MAKES OPERA GRAND A large story . . . or an intimate one. A large chorus or a single voice. A large orchestra or a solo instrument. An extravagant set or a barren stage. All of these things, seemingly contradictory, contribute to the lavish world of grand opera, but they only scratch the surface! How these things come together, how music enriches them, how the result makes you feel . . . are what makes opera grand! Enjoy a multicourse dinner and a multimedia presentation with artistic discussion during dessert and coffee. John Singer Sargent’s 1918 oil painting Gassed presents a classical frieze of World War I soldiers being led from the battlefield alive, but changed forever by exposure to mustard gas. THE ART OF WAR A historian is noted as saying that “art and war are old companions,” and many military leaders felt that art could capture the true essence of war. Although artists have been capturing the images of war for years, World War I marked the first time that the U.S. government commissioned artists to capture a war effort in the hopes that the artists could provide a historical record and stir up support for the war. Join Dr. Festa as she shows and discusses pieces of art from antiquity to World War II. Location: North Dining Room Date: November 9 (Friday); 6:30 pm Cost: $43 per person; includes a multicourse dinner and a multimedia lecture; limited seating.
